Owner description: Our Horseback Riding tours will take you to a secluded and interesting destination of your choice. You can ride to one of several waterfalls to enjoy a picnic lunch and swimming or you can explore various caves, one which will allow you to canoe deep inside an underground cave system. A pre-ride orientation will give the rider important information concerning our particular trails and Western style of horseback riding. We take care to match the rider with the most suitable horse and tack by considering the height, weight and riding ability of each person. Rain gear, water bottles, camera bags, and gourmet picnic lunches are provided. We select routes that pass through varied ecosystems while your guide describes traditional uses of plants. Included are visits to Maya ruins, which are abundant in this area, and the exhilarating experience of riding through a pristine Rain Forrest. It is important that riders wear riding boots, hiking boots, or tennis shoes (with socks), and long (preferably single-seamed) trousers or jodhpurs. All half day and full day rides include breaks for swimming, caving, and picnic lunches. Be sure to bring your bathing suites and cameras to enjoy the day to its fullest.

“Mountain Equestrian Trails- Belize Adventure touring at it's best.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 23, 2013

Mountain Equestrian Trails in the Cayo District of Belize is indeed an amazing place. The rustic feel in the common area of the cantina and the cabanas where you sleep transport you to a different world without sacrificing any comfort. My time at MET was as genuine, warm and peaceful as any I’ve ever had.

Until, we went on an adventure tour that was as epic and intense as any I’ve ever read about. Arran Bevis comes from a family of explorers. That sense of adventure and wanting to share the experience with others is evident in the stories he tells and the tours he runs. This was a trip where everyone was expected to pull their own weight, be on point and take risks. The thing is, if you’re a city boy or girl and want to go take risks in the jungle, go with someone who knows the jungle. Arran was born and raised there.

The adventure tour: Arran, Gio and 3 of us were helicoptered into the headwaters of a river that has only been descended 7 times before- 3 of them by Arran. We took everything we needed, most importantly Alpacka inflatable packraft kayaks. For 5 days we slept in hammock tents, cooked on wood fires on the ground, shot fish with a speargun and most importantly, ran some amazing rapids and jumped off some incredible waterfalls.

The key to taking risks is to stack all the cards in your favor and prepare well. Arran and Gio, his Belizean born, American trained medic, have the perfect combo of competence and "f*** yeah we’re gonna run that" attitude. Arran and Gio met as medics for the La Ruta Maya River Challenge. Both of them are Wilderness 1st Responders and Swiftwater/Flood Rescue certified. They can even teach those courses. Additionally, Gio has extensive trauma combat medic training with the Belizean Defence Force- a group trained by American military- and he’s an Assistant Instructor with the Belize Disaster Rescue Response Team. Arran has been on world class expeditions and running rivers from the age of 16 and Gio started in the field when he was 14.

More importantly, both of these guys were born and raised in the jungles of Belize. They get why you go to Belize- down and dirty epic adventure. Each time you turn the corner of the river and are amazed with the view, they map out exposure to risk AND FUN and guide you through an unforgettable experience.

All the other reviews here on Trip Advisor about amazing food, great horseback riding and WONDERFUL staff at MET are all spot on. I'd especially like to give a shout out to Rigo, MET's horse guide and Marta and Blanca Cisneros, two sisters who put together all the amazing food.

“Highly Recommended”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 14, 2013

I was recommended M.E.T. from a friend who had stayed there several years. I am not experienced with horses at all, so I normally wouldn't have booked a tour like this unless it was recommended. But the day long ride ended up one of the highlights of my entire trip. Everyone was very helpful and put me at ease- I had a great time.

This was definitely the way to see the Mountain Pine Ridge area. The guides were excellent with horses, but they were also a wealth of information on the area including details on the plants and birds we saw along the way. The full day ride I went on included a trip to a cave and to a waterfall. They served a ridiculously fantastic lunch at the waterfall after we spent some time swimming.

The views from the main property were stunning, and everyone was very friendly and welcoming. I only went on a day ride, but I would love to stay in one of the cabanas if I am ever back in the area. It looked like a very relaxing and peaceful place to stay.

“Amazing ride to a waterfall and back”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 22, 2013

If you are an experienced rider, Mountain Equestrian Trails is for you! The ride is through Mountain Pine Ridge, and the full day ride we did(one of many we've done over the years) was to Big Rock Falls, which is a wonderful place to take a break and eat a good meal for lunch. You'll have such a beautiful ride all around the MPR area; it's the perfect place to ride.

Aaron Bevis, the caballero at MET, knows horses amazingly well, and even if you're a novice rider, will make sure you have a fun, safe ride. The horses are in great shape, and are obviously looked after well. You can tell that even they like the ride.

I've also done half day rides there, and then gone on to other attractions in MPR since it's so close. Will I go back, many more times. Do I recommend MET, for sure! And if you want to do days of riding, they have a great lodge there too. Happy trails!

“Best Riding Experience in Central America”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 13, 2013

These transplanted Texans take THE BEST CARE of their horses in the most beautiful setting, so horse person or not visit MET. Warm family atmosphere, sumptious food (especially the local & CA dishes complete with fresh flowers on your plate). The ride to Barton Creek and cave tour is worth every penny, even not counting the delicious lunch packed along. Superb staff and the Bevis family see that your trip is beyond compare. They will arrange or conduct whatever tours you want. I felt that if I encountered any issue while in Belize, I could call on them even from other locations because they want to see that you have a great experience while visiting the country.
Perfect location for couples - romantic with just kerosene lanterns in your cabana. But couples, family or singles - MET is a place not to be missed. All cabanas with thatched roof, georgious views, very comfortable furnishings - the perfect quiet get-away with the comfort you desire. MET is just enough off the beaten path but close to everything in Cayo Dist.
