It's a bit of a drive from San Ignacio. But travelers will be rewarded with some nice caves some nice swimming holes, waterfalls, and hiking trails.

It is curious to see how the flora/fauna change at this elevation. You leave deep jungle and enter pine forests.

Worth a day trip if you an extra day.

Long, bumpy drive from San Ignacio. Must have good rental car. It look us 1.5-2 hours to get to Rio on Pools from the city. Loved Rio on Pools and for hours we were the only people there. The rocks were a little slippery so be careful because you are in the middle of nowhere! The area is fantastic and I cannot believe such a beautiful place, and the best place around to cool down from the HOT sun, was empty. You can park about 50 feet from the entrance to the water and the walk down is fairly obvious so you should find your way just fine. Rio was marked sorta well on the MPR road, but the signs otherwise are poor and you should ask a local for directions before you head out of the city bc you may not see anyone the rest of your day. From Rio we went on to Caracol instead of the caves. Caracol was cool and we were the only people there too. A lot different from Tikal in the sense that no one is there and the excavation is not as expansive. They also had some kind of camp set up there for kids or something so it just did not feel as exotic or exciting as Tikal. Most of the jungle around the exposed ruins has been cleared so it does not feel as jungle-y sa Tikal either. That being said it is worth seeing but we were surprised by the $10 per person entry fee- we would have gone to the caves if we had known that. It is a very long drive (1 hr past Rio on Pools so 3 from San Ignacio), and more money than we were expecting. We did have a good time and the view from the top of the tallest structure was magnificent.

A beautiful drive thru the pines on your way to Caracol. Some really nice areas and rivers to cross. Good portion was burned down from lightning strikes and nature is healing itself so don't expect a lush landscape in some places.

Nobody around for sure, but apart from some scenic river crossings, soso. Now if you like birding, that is a different story.
