This is a compact ruin with several temples and residence areas to climb. The primary ruin has a carved panel depicting various symbolic images. Climbing to the top provides a wonderful view into Guatemala and of the surrounding area. We took a hand-crank ferry to cross the river. It's not a huge site so it is accessible. The visitors center showed us the evolution of this Mayan ruin. It gave perspective to what we saw on the site.

We took public transportation to the Xanantunich Mayan site. This was a tour we could do on our own from San Ignacio. When we arrived we had to wait for a hand cranked ferry to take us across a river to the side of the site. We had to walk uphill for quite a distance, it was a workout. The site was amazing, we somewhat joined a guide who had a tour and listened to his knowledge about the site. The climb to the top was not bad and once on the top of the tallest structure we could see different villages in the distance. We overheard the guide saying and pointing the different places. We also heard some people saying that Guatemala could be seem from up there. It was a little hot on the top but a refreshing breeze kept us cool. The Mayans were incredible people just by visiting these ruins could tell you how intelligent they were.

Xunantunich is a true wonder to behold. Perched atop a hill and overlooking the Mopan River and the Cayo District, this site is literally surrounded by natural beauty. However, it is for its history that visitors flock to Belize to witness its majesty.

Xunantunich was a Mayan ceremonial site during the Classic Period, and hosts more than 25 temples and palatial dwellings. The largest structure is 130 feet tall and is called "El Castillo", or most fittingly, "the Castle". From the top, visitors can even see into neighboring Guatemala.

Visiting such a place fills one with absolute awe. It is amazing to think that the ancient Mayans built such magnificent offerings, with only their hands and a few crude instruments. Climbing them and looking in detail at each stone... each symbol... is truly breathtaking.

And getting there is an adventure in itself. Vehicles and passengers are on foot are carried across the river to Xunantunich by means of a hand-cranked ferry.

A visit is like stepping back in time to a place where even the ordinary is extraordinary.

Most tours do these together and as a pair they work well, being rather close. They are a really good example of Maya architecture, still rather devoid of tourists and, to be honest, well described by the other reviewers.

Do not miss them, easy to reach, easy to get round and rather good.

See them before Tikal to really appreciate them. Don't miss the small visitor centre and enjoy the drive there.

We took a trip through Mayan Country in Guatemala and Belize - Absolutely amazing. There is a raft to take your car/jeep across the river (never seen anything quite like it) There is a handcrank to propel the raft across the river. Kids loved it. The ruins were great - beautiful view of the San Ignacio Valley from the top of the pyramid - and lovely mask carvings on the side of one of the pyramids. We visited Xunantunich and Yaxha on the same day. Very doable.
