My friends and I stayed in a one of the treehouses for about three days. Even though there is no electricity (which is half of the fun) the treehouse we stayed in is in great condition. Very clean, not too many creepy crawlies and the family of howler monkeys next door is very cool. Jose and Mariam, the owners, are the coolest hosts ever. Opt for the meal plan....you will not be dissapointed. They will accomodate your dietary needs as long as you tell them up front. Also, if you are interested in going over the border to Tikal, let Jose arrange it for you. We had a great experience crossing the border into Guatemala and Jose arranged everything. Also, we opted to take him up on horseback riding and swimming out to this amazing waterfall. You can basically just choose activities in the area and still have a full 3 or 4 days. Their rates are reasonable and if you're lucky you'll get to meet the rest of the family (including the 3 children and old Uncle Joe). The Martz farm is an experience you won't soon forget.

We traveled to the Western side of Belize, very close to the Guatemalan border, with another family. There were 4 adults and 5 kids ages 9 to 18. We stayed three nights with the Martinez family and it was the perfect choice for our families. There are a variety of accomodations: a wonderful treehouse with hammocks, single beds and "running water" (a bucket and pulley system into the spring below). There are also two open cabanas and one closed cabin. The cabin is the only one with a private bathroom. There are a number of clean and shared showers and toilets. This farm is in the middle of the jungle - there is no electricity but a ton of atmosphere. The Martinez family welcomed us with open arms. Miriam cooked wonderful, local meals including a birthday cake decorated with orchid petals. Jose runs the farm and the tours and recites poety by candlelight. Their children (ages 1,3 and 7?) took us on tours of the farm and helped our kids chase chickens. These kids have an uncanny connection with the farm and the surrounding jungle! Lots of dogs, cats, donkeys, and horses complete the picture. This farm is quite far away from San Ignacio down a country road but for us it was worth the trip. Our kids had a ball and would go back in a minute. We did a day trip to Tikal from the Martz Farm and were back by sundown. We did a full day horseback ride and hike with Jose to a waterfall and went swimming under the waterfall. We also discovered how Howler Monkeys got their name!

The accomodations are rustic but comfortable - and so fun to stay on a farm in the jungle!
