“Excellent little museum”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 21, 2014

We were told in a store that the museum was closed on a Saturday which was not true and it was almost by accident that we went in.

What a lovely place. The museum tells the history of Belize and shows the development from the Mayan era, complete with model villages and jewellery to the colonial era and beyond.

Lovely displays of the building of the railway system to support the logging industry and some great displays of the coming of aviation.

Is fairly compact and an hour or two is all that is needed.

Really well set out and gives a good background to this country which I was quite ignorant about.

“Absolutely worth a visit”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 17, 2014

The Museum is located in an old historic building (former courthouse and prison). Unpretentious, this museum is absolutely worth a visit. On our last day, after three weeks in Belize, this was a welcome addition to our stay. The section on transportation is informative, the Maya section upstairs is very good and summarizes the essentials of several Maya sites we visit on location; the separate insects collection interesting.
Unfortunately the small museum shop is missing essential literature/books/brochures on the different sections of the Museum : a unforgivable omission

“Don't Miss It”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 12, 2013

If you are staying in Belize City, don't miss the Museum of Belize. It only takes an hour to an hour and a half to visit the museum and see all the the exhibits. You'll gain a little perspective of the history of the country and its people. The museum is housed in a former prison.

“Let's me tell you a fairy tale !”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 1, 2013

It really sounds like a fairy tale: this museum formerly was ... a jail, built in 1857, and an especially uncomfortable one ! You can still enter a prisoner's cell... Renovated in a beautiful museum since a few decades, the museum gives a nice view of cultural realities in Belize.
The best of the museum is definitively the Maya section which will introduce you to the pre-columbian sites you can visit all over Belize. Tremendous pictures from the past show the hurricanes devastating the city.
If you have no time to waste, pass your way if you are invited to the butterflies and insects room: it's just dusty and tedious.

“Interesting Place”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 14, 2013

The facility is nice and overall, the presentation is good. The foundation is there and I believe with a bit more attention, it could be built upon to make for a fascinating museum. If you’re in the city and have nothing planned, its definitely a place to visit along with the Bliss memorial and St John’s Cathedral.
