Housed in a former jail, the museum features Informative displays and photographs showing the devastation caused by hurricane Haiti. There a few Mayan artifacts, an insect and a stamp collection. Worth a visit.

I liked being able to take photos in the museum, but flash is not allowed.
The museum is quite small which prevented a wide range of exhibits being shown.
For those loving stamps or insects, the museum offers surprisingly large collections, a complete history of all Belize's stamps and most of its insects - I'm not keen on creepy, crawlies, so just gazed at the butterfiles.
A way to spend an hour in Belize City if it's raining.

This museum is in a building that used to be a jail. Seeing the size of the rooms gives an appreciation for how hard it would have been to be a prisoner here in the past. The museum is small, but has stamps, the Belize flag that hung at the World Trade Center, examples of local butterflies and bugs, and it also has a replica of their National Treasure. This National Treasure is a Mayan Jade carving of a head. The actual jade piece is moved from bank to bank on untold days to keep it from being stolen. It really brought home to us the small amount of money that Belize has and the poverty in the area. There is poverty and wealth, beauty and difficult sites in Belize City. If you love history, this may be a worth while stop for you. We were glad we visited.

We went on a Saturday morning. The place was dead (in fact, the gates out front looked locked - our hotel told us it was closed). There were some pretty good exhibits although would only plan to spend a few hours there.

A visit takes less than an hour. There are lots of stamps, some MAYA jade, past hurricane photos and some propaganda for the current political regime.
