“Could be excellent”
Reviewed August 28, 2013

Unfortunately we visited Crooked Tree Sanctuary in July and this was not the best period to see most birds. Yet, we managed to see half a dozen very beautiful birds as well as many butterflies. The walks are very well sign posted and the man at the reception of the sanctuary is friendly and helpful.

“Waterfowl is the attraction, take binoculars. Good local restaurant.”
Reviewed April 1, 2013 via mobile

I am not a serious birder, but love nature and found the lake to be fairly scenic with lots of birds. Lake level was low, there were many birds to be seen just from the causeway access road. Also you can walk the shoreline both ways from the visitor center (minimal exhibits) located at the causeway west end. Take binoculars!
I did not do a boat tour, which leaves about 6:15 am from Birds Eye View Lodge, supposedly you see a lot more on it. See them day before.
"Carrie's Kitchen" is a very good local restaurant on the southside of town past the hurricane shelter, serving generous portions of Belizean food for about US$5 plate - stew chicken, rice/beans, cole slaw, plantain. Look for signs.
There are supposedly a couple campgrounds around town.

“Excellent Birding Site- one of the best in Belize”
Reviewed March 24, 2013

This is a must for wading and waterbirds in Belize. Jabiru, Cormorants, N. Jacana, Terns, Snail Kite, Teal, as well as a multitude of forest birds in the surrounding forests.

“tranquil place to be”
Reviewed March 6, 2013

We stayed in the sanctuary for two nights upon arrival in Belize. We did a bird watching boat tour with our lodge, Crooked Tree Lodge, and had a great time. It was $25 pp with minimum 4 people. This area attracts a lot of bird watchers for it's many species but we came simply to relax and enjoy the wildlife. Knowing nothing about bird watching, we still enjoyed it. We learned a lot about the birds of Belize from our guide and from bird watchers in our boat. Helps to have really good binoculars. The scenery, alone, is enough to enjoy this tour.

“crooked tree”
Reviewed April 14, 2006

we stayed in this little village, which is supposed to be teh oldest village in belize. we took the morning birding tour on the boat on the lagoon, and it was fun, even though we are not birders we still were amazed at how many varieties of birds we saw, as well as crocodiles, iguanas, etc. the village is very small, we ate at 3J's every day, the food there is limited but amazingly delicious- have the fish and chips, unlike any you've ever had!
