Our family loved the Howler Monkey Lodge. (Yes, there are actually Howler monkeys) The kids loved Russel, the guide that took us all over the area. He was alot of fun and very educational. The food was great, very nice people. It was a great first stop in Belize and a great way to get to know the country and its people.

This was our first trip to Belize and wanting to experience the Jungle, my husband and I decided to stay at the Howler Monkey Lodge - and we were ever so glad we did!! We were met at the airport by Edward and driven to the lodge. Soon after settling into our rustic cabin overlooking the river, we were off for an easy paddle down the river. This was a great way to see the jungle - it's birds, monkeys, iguanas, and vegetation. For 3 days, we had Edward at our disposal - driving us to various sites and tours that we had requested the Lodge to arrange for us. He also provided us with a great insight to the people and history of Belize - a great Tour Guide!!

The meals at the Lodge represented Belize home cooking at its finest - lots of variety and all of it delicious! The fresh juices offered at breakfast were worth staying here for! Melissa was very sweet and eager to share her recipes. Meal times were set to accomadate our schedule.

I had pre-arranged over the internet our stay at the Lodge along with various tours to Altun Ha, Lamanai, night crocodile spotting etc. and we were more than satisfied with everything done for us. We felt like we were staying with family and were very well looked after.

Stayed November 2008

We have just returned from a 22 day trip to Guatemala and Belize and although we stayed in a number of excellent hotels and lodges this was our favourite of the lot.
We found Howler Monkey Lodge on the internet at short notice after our original accommodation in Crooked Tree was cut off due to flooding. A Google search came up with their website and it seemed to tick all the boxes.
Initially we intended to stay for just one night while we reworked our travel plans but we were made to feel so welcome, found the setting so beautiful and discovered so much to do in the area we stayed for 2 days and returned at the end of our trip for one more night before flying home.
Our cabin had a great setting, looking down over the river: it was simply furnished but had all the we needed - plus a mezzanine child's bed that we will need next time we visit! It was great to sit down by the river and watch the Howler Monkeys and Iguanas in the trees. We were extremely lucky and had an encounter with a pair of River Otters too!!
Located only 30 minutes from the airport it was easy to find and the roads were good. It proved a great base for trips to Lamanai and Altun Ha before heading down south to Belize Zoo, Dangriga and Placencia. We did a nightwalk at the Community Baboon Sanctuary which is a short walk away, and allowed us to hear more Howler monkeys, and see deer & armadillos. We also made use of the (free!) canoes at Howler Monkey Lodge. For one canoeing trip Ed took us upstream and dropped us off to give us a leisurely, 2hour, wildlife-filled drift down the river and back to the lodge. Wildlife spotting at its easiest and most memorable.
All this makes Howler Monkey Lodge a well above average place to stay - they get the excellent rating because of Mel, Ed and their 2 boys who own and run the lodge and who provide a wonderful service and make you feel genuinely welcome. Mel's home cooking is delicious and gives you a real flavour of Belizean cuisine. Nothing was too much trouble for them. Their responses to our last minute booking requests were always prompt and helpful.
We visited as a couple and thought it excellent but would consider this as a great place to bring a family as well. If ever we are lucky enough to return to Belize, Howler Monkey Lodge will be top of our list of places to stay.
