We just spent five days, four nights at Itza, my fourth or so time of dropping in there, and it was terrific. In the interest of full disclosure, I know the owners, and am a professional marine biologist who works frequently in Belize. The remote island thing is very hard to pull off well, so believe me, I do not go to Itza just because we're friends- I go for the spectacular diving (a vanishing experience in the tropical Atlantic due to climate change overlain on local human impacts), and I look for places where I can get my in-water work done while being inspired and relaxed by island life and amenities (which I expect to be minimal save for safety, good food and company). Itza is IT. Backed up for dive support by Huracan Dive Center (also a great outfit), Itza now has lovely, comfortable rooms (after a recent rennovation), a comfortable and friendly central lodge, and great Belizean food (I love Belizean food- simple, Central American tinged with strong Caribbean influences, hot sauce at hand at all times). Most important for me, the management is trying hard to make Itza a model ecoresort. Long Caye includes a large private mangrove reserve (ca. 240 acres, about a third of the island), littoral forest (another vanishing breed), great birdwatching especially during migration, and lots of cool little natural moments. Besides guests, Long Caye also hosts an interesting botany (ask about the ant-orchid and palms), interesting lizards, lovely snorkeling, and great diving. Crocs too, whose slides you may sometimes see in the interior of the mangroves. Itza is for the adventurer in you who wants an exciting but reasonably safe visit, and lots to think about and remember once you're home. If your trip is short, don't worry, you'll be back.
