Itza Lodge

Our visit to Itza Resort at Long Caye was our second in over a year and a half. The new management team has done extensive renovations to the rooms, and the result is a wonderful improvement. We took a group of 14 divers there for a 2-night stay in February, and wished we could've stayed longer. The management and crew were very warm, helpful and accommodating. The food and service was great. The snorkeling and diving from Long Caye is world class as it sits on Lighthouse Reef atoll with the great Blue Hole in close proximity, and other famous dive sites near Half Moon Caye and Long Caye itself. The walkways that lead you through the littoral forest of mangroves and other shorline tropical trees are enchanting. Kayaking is a must, and this location is great for kitesurfers. The views from this secluded location are stunning. If you go, you will want to return. We, at Avadon Divers, will definately be taking more diving groups out to Itza Resort at Long Caye again and again if we can.

The Itza resort has great snorkeling off the dock and nearby reef. The boardwalk paths provide access to mangrove swap habitat with a diversity of birds and reptiles. As the sun goes down one can sit in the bar, sipping a cold beer watching passing boats. The long dock, lit at night, provides a lovely spot for star gazing. A recommended destination.

Vsited Itza Resort and fell in love. It is a green resort and was impressed with all they are doing to not upset the enviroment in any way. Love that they have kept the more natural atomsphere and not so commercial. Most resorts are all plastic and overdone and this was just what we were looking for to get back to nature and still be pampered guests. Loved playing games at night with everyone and was like a happy family. Everyone was very friendly and helpful. Food was delicious. Not being much of a fish eater was a little leery but was cooked very well and mild tasting. The lobster was to die for and ate to our fill. Sleeping was best I have had in years. With the breeze blowing through the window every night it was just the right temperature and when a sudden rain would blow up at night loved the sound of it on the roof and blowing thru the palms. Hat caye and the Audobon Society island were beautiful. The water is the clearest and most beautiful I have ever seen and to see what a reef is was amazing. To be in the middle of the ocean and see the shallow clear water and then walk in the water to the stone wall on end of reef to the deep ocean depths was unbelievable. Most restful and informative vacation we have ever taken and can not wait to go back. Hopefully this August. We do not dive but were tempted to take it up when we saw all the diving spots and variety of fish. The Huracan Dive shop is top rate for diving and Ruth is the best diving hostess ever. Room was very nice. Not fancy but in keeping with the atmosphere . Bed was very comfortable, bathroom with great shower which was so welcome every afternoon after sun and swimming. Water not hot but just comfortable temperature and most delightful. Very laid back and not what one would look for if looking for shoppng, hectic vacation, etc. but perfect for the different vacation one would want when visiting paradise. Paradise doesn't need all the "pomp and circumstance".

Room Tip: Rooms on upper level are wonderful. When you open your eyes you see the sun rising over the ocean a...

We spent a week at Itza and, although it has potential, it is far from ready to host guests. Indeed, we often felt more like an inconvenience than paying guests. We paid far too much for our week and hope you don't!

Food - mediocre at best, rarely served at the same time and often cold, poor service for food and drinks, no choices or seconds available, some portions large and others small, not much seafood served (unless folks in our group caught it)
Rooms - exposed wiring where there should have been lighting, beds uncomfortable, and linens of poor quality, no hot water!!!
Beach - the small beach in front of Itza was dirty - sea grass, trash, rusty barrels - little evident maintenance or stewardship of the grounds or island
Activities - there were a handful of kayaks to borrow, but other than that and a few rickety wooden paths to walk there wasn't much to do. The outdoor games that were available were made of cheap plastic that didn't hold up to the gusty wind, and the indoor games were dirty. You need to rent snorkeling gear from the nearby dive shop. Bring your own beach towel, too. Itza doesn't have any for you. The docks were nice, but provide service for all three resorts on the island so they are busy. No one was particularly knowledgeable about the flora/fauna/wildlife.
Service - Although some of the Belizian staff was helpful and nice, the service overall was poor and unprofessional. Rather than take accountability for any of the challenges (no hot water, fan in room not working, missing games, mixups/reheated food for meals) we heard a lot of excuses and the story of how challenging opening a resort is. Additionally, there are bunk room options - private bedrooms with a shared bathroom but likely just the same as the upstairs "beach view" room. We were not told about these, but ask. I wouldn't pay more than you have to if you find yourself at Itza. Notably - on the ride out in the open air boat, the driver took a handgun out of his pocket and put it in the driving console, which was disconcerting.

Positives: Go to Half Moon Caye and spend the day there - it was picturesque and well taken care of by the Audubon Society. Beautiful! The local dive shop was helpful, knowledgeable, and professional. The reef is near Long Caye and there are a lot of snorkeling opportunities.

This place is a true paradise! Imagine waking up on a big bed with the morning sun shining in and amazing views of the blue ocean. The island gets some of the trade winds, so it has beautiful weather while staying very pleasant at night. Can't get much better than that.
I had a great week at Itza, the atmosphere of the whole resort is very relaxed you can spend the day lounging on hammocks, taking the kayaks out, exploring the mangroves, snorkeling, or diving with nearby Hurracan. I liked to start each morning off with an hour or two of reading on the dock.
The resort also does a great job of incorporating their eco-friendly stance. My stay begin with a short overview of eco-sustainability on the island. How the toilets and power is run and how to take water conscious showers.
The food was great also! My favorite was the tostadas they had for lunch one day and lobster scrambled up like eggs for breakfast on another. For drinks, I would recommend the Long Caye Ice Tea, it was a great twist on the classic. The staff is very flexible and accommodating on the time they serve meals based on your plans for the day. Marcia, our host for our stay was incredibly friendly and helped to make our stay pleasant and relaxing. We even had a bonfire on the beach on one of our night.
Long Caye is really a place of beauty and one of the last relatively untouched reef ecosystems out there. I would return to this paradise in a heartbeat!
