“A little gem”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 3, 2013

A relaxing quiet getaway was what I was looking for and found here at Off The Wall. Kendra and Jim have put so much creative energy into this little island. They are continually looking for little ways to improve what they call home. They care deeply about the environment and our effects on it and do their very best to limit the impact their resort makes leaving us with an opportunity to experience the beauty of this corner of the reef. The reef is very healthy, alive with so many colors and species of coral, sponges, and sea life.
We were the first guests of the season and were greeted with perfect weather and 84 degree water to dive in. I really enjoyed the communal eating, gathering for each meal with the guests and all of the staff what a perfect way to get to know each other and enjoy each others stories. The staff is top notch, I can't say enough about how well each and every one did their job at the same time making me feel right at home. I stopped by the kitchen to get some coffee after a morning dive and to say hi to Teress and was greeted with her ever present smile and hot chocolate chip cookies! Just one example of the many that made my time there so enjoyable.
I will definitely be back to visit again.

I recently landed on this wonderful little island and was greeted with nothing but smiles.
This resort is smaller in size, only holding about 10 people.A somewhat more rustic and laidback atmosphere, although that's what was so cool about this place. The diving was spectacular! The vast amount of healthy colorful coral was incredible. So many different kinds of fish also.Sharks, rays and eels were also plentiful.Diving down to the wall and looking over it for the first time was wild !!! YOU have to see it for yourself. The snorkeling very close to the island was full of coral clusters and holding plenty of sea life.
Kendra and Jim, the owners made you feel very welcome. The staff is very friendly and always helpful. The food was delicious, you will not go away hungry.
You have to come see this place ! You will love it !

If you’re reading this review and want the perfect island in the caribbean, search no more--you MUST come here! We are very grateful that we stumbled across Jim and Kendra’s lovely island resort. We stayed during the week of April 13-20, 2013 and the weather was beautiful! We are still reminiscing about this trip and wanted to share our experience:

One week is the minimum stay because Jim and Kendra only travel to the mainland on Saturdays. While one week was perfect, we wished we had just booked our last week with them instead of going to Placencia! (Placencia was fun and interesting, but you cannot begin to compare it to Off The Wall). The Island is located a 1.5 hour boat ride away from mainland Belize. There are a total of five cottages that are all open-air, rustic but charming and make you feel like you are on your own private island. You can walk around the island in 20-30 minutes and you will get to encounter some of the largest blue and hermit crabs you have ever seen! We made friends with the iguanas who loved to lay on the lava rocks. We also enjoyed the company of the other guests and staff through family-style meals and excursions. Kendra and Jim were so hospitable as they opened up their home to us. They made sure to offer activities twice a day but also respected those who wanted to relax on the beach or adventure on their own. Therese’s cooking was really delicious and we left every meal feeling full and satisfied. Insider Tip: Go back to the dining room later in the evening and you will find a hermit crab party!

We are avid snorkelers and planned on taking snorkel trips to the endless patch reefs inside Glover’s Reef Atoll. We did take many trips; some boat trips with Tony and Tyrone and others with the Kayaks. On all these occasions we saw amazing healthy coral full of life, a plethora of tropical fish, barracuda (actually not as scary as one would think), sharks, schools of bonefish right off the dock and our favorites the trumpetfish and eagle rays! Again, this was JUST snorkeling.

We didn’t have diving in mind as we really love snorkeling, but the discover scuba was so easy and so rewarding that we went on to get our full open water certification. We did our first dive off “The Wall”- an infamous wall that every diver wishes they could go to. Let’s just say we saw two loggerhead turtles, a five foot barracuda, sharks, giant barrel coral and an enormous nassau grouper!

Words cannot describe as this was such a fun, memorable trip. We DEFINITELY plan to come back, we miss you Jim and Kendra!!! We have attached photos to fill in some of the details.

Room Tip: The White Cottage was perfect!

Our family of 4 (girls 11 and 7) stayed at Off the Wall in mid June. I had spent hours and hours researching places to stay that would enable us to really see healthy marine life while protecting the environment while doing so. Off the Wall had such excellent reviews we decided to stay there. Kendra was so attentive even when I started emailing her about our trip!
We were met at the dock in Dangriga by Jim and several staff. He is super knowledgeable, friendly and hilarious! The staff (Junior, Matthew, and Steven) were super nice, knowledgeable and easy going too! Right away we were blown away by the colors of the ocean heading out to the caye. The clarity of the water was remarkable too. Once on the island, Kendra showed us around, explained life on the island and introduced us to Eileen, the super talented, friendly, and lovely cook! We were immediately struck by how much effort had gone into landscaping the grounds (keep in mind it's a limestone island- very little "good" soil to work with), building lovely cabanas, multiple sitting areas that overlooked the ocean on all sides, gorgeous-tiled open air showers (yet private), and composting toilet system (easy to use, very little odor). There is always a breeze, so fans were not needed- the beds were quite comfortable! There are hermit crabs and iguanas to keep you company throughout the day and night on the paths, which provided a great deal of entertainment especially to see them race to the coconut shredding station for treats. The dining room was a restful and inviting experience to enjoy Eileen's INCREDIBLE cooking and get to know other guests and staff. I enjoyed talking to the staff about their families and the towns where they lived. It was GREAT for my girls to learn more about their languages too (English, Kriol, and Garifuna, and some Spanish)...
Now for the diving/snorkeling review- Off the Wall was beyond expectations for ANY ocean experience! The gear was in tip/top shape, the dive master-Matthew was so helpful, professional, and went out of his way to teach you about the marine life- he took care of a few lion fish while there, showed us many spiny lobsters, numerous types of fish, coral and knew the various sites like the "back of his hand".... Very attentive and helpful to our inexperienced 7 and 11 year old (the 11 year old just got certified to dive). We took the kayaks out to the sand bar everyday- where we could snorkel more and play in the sand and shallow water. You can actually see quite a bit of life just from the shore snorkeling as there are healthy coral heads in 3 feet of water there! We met the resident barracuda, Goliath, who is a daunting 4 feet long, yet is harmless! It was quite difficult to pack up and leave the island when our trip was over. It's an amazing place and we will return to visit as soon as we can! Thanks Kendra and Jim and ALL the staff for a memorable week!

Room Tip: The family house was nice b/c it had 2 bedrooms and a large wrap around porch.

We made arrangements to stay with Off the Wall Dive Shop and Resort with Jim and Kendra for the week and couldn't have been happier with the quality of service and the surrounding eco system. If your looking for a nice quiet vacation with plenty to do for fishermen and non-fisherman alike this is the place! Beautiful reefs and islands and not many people.

My husband, an avid fly fisherman, had a ball fishing the flats on Long Caye and Middle Caye. Middle Caye was a 45 minute kayak paddle which provided him with some pretty nice bone fish. He even did some hand line fishing while snorkeling and caught groupers, jacks, cudas, grunts, snapper, flounder, a trunk fish, hound fish, a queen trigger fish, and more.

Jim, Kendra and their staff were right on the ball at every turn. Accommodations are simple and eco friendly but very nice. Our cabin was right on the water with a nice breeze. The solar outdoor showers, which was a beautiful experience, and composting toilets were not as primitive as they may sound. The beds and pillows are nice, comfortable firm. I was concerned about the beds due to a lower back problem I have but they were nicer than the 4-star hotel we stay in on our US layover. I slept like a baby.

The snorkeling was excellent (We aren't divers but some of guests were and were very pleased). There were probably 6 or 7 different types of reefs within swimming distance of our cabin and you could kayak to many more. All types of reef fish, lots of various rays, turtles, sharks, eels, octopus, tons of conch, etc. The coral was in very good shape. Some of the healthiest I've seen in the Caribbean. You won't be disappointed with the reef.

Jim and Kendra and their staff are all top notch. Excellent at all aspects of your stay from helping you set up your trip to taking care of immediate needs on the island. They make you feel like your one of the family. The thing we really appreciated was their flexibility- if you want to do your own thing, they are good with that; if you want a tour of other reef areas they work with that. Jim seemed to size everyone up the first day as to our ability to stay safe and then pointed us in the direction of what we wanted to try. If you needed anything they did their best to make it happen. That's exactly what we were looking for!

Eileen, the cook, was great! Meals are served were simple family style recipes and were always excellent! Fresh squeezed juice was available all day every day. Mathew, the dive master, was very good. He had an excellent eye for spotting interesting reef wildlife and was very informative about anything we saw in the water. Junior took care of the grounds and the boat details while Mario, the security guard, watched over everything at night. It's rare that you take a vacation where everything is better than you ever thought it could be but this was one of those!

Going into this vacation I wasn't sure I would be able to "slow down" enough to enjoy a small island for a week, especially, not a place with a public outdoor shower and composting toilets. However, I was sad to leave and could have handled another week. We will definitively go back!

We're happy to have had you join us on your recent stay and are delighted that you had such a great time. Thank you for your kind words about your time here, about your comfortable accommodations, enjoyable meals, and about our resort. Our staff loved hearing about your fishing tales over meal times and spending time with both of you. We do hope you will return in the future.

Jim was very honest about whale shark diving and didn't try to sell us a whale shark boat tour. In addition, he called another resort every day to see if there were whale shark sightings. The diving is easy and laid back, visibility great, beautiful corals. The fish and shark population are still recovering but you can still see nurse sharks, large turtles, huge groupers, bumpheads, parrotfish (the list goes on).
Make sure you clarify how long the diving is. It took half a week before we dove for an hour length (usually they stop at 45 minutes). I think this is because they usually get new divers who blow their air quickly.
The snorkeling in front of the sand bank was amazing. If you don't move too much, you will see the dart fish, sailfish blenny, tons of large and small crabs, and file fish. There are also large fish close by. Bring water shoes or crocs as the sand it rough).
The resort is like a rustic cottage feel (but on the ocean!). The island is long and narrow so the breeze takes care of most of of the bugs. Still, bring repellent for sand flies and mosquitoes. Its nice to do yoga in the morning and kayak or use the stand up boards whenever.
We ended up sleeping in our outdoor bed because it was nice and breezy. It was romantic with the full moon=)
The food is good but you will more than likely get sick of beans by the end of the week. They have a lot of condiments like marie sharps. Bring a water bottle.

Room Tip: Thatcher room with large outdoor patio was closest to the ocean. it has a double bed inside, a twin...

Off the wall is an amazing place!
We stayed with slickrock, and really enjoyed it, but had such a wonderful experience with
Off the Wall, that we plan to go back and stay there.
Doreth is the most amazing diving instructor ever!
I had Claustrophobia issues on my first "discover dive" and Doreth litterally held my hand
and guided me through, and made me so comfortable, that I eneded up getting my
open water certification!!
Jim and Kendra are great people, very friendly, and helpful. Captain Tony, not only drives
the boat, but he also helped me catch my first bone fish! Tyrone is an excellent guide as well.
They really look out for everyone, and make it an amazing experience.
We saw so much!
Rays, turtles, scorpion fish, baracuda, sharks, parrot fish, angel fish, eels, and the most
wonderful coral.

Room Tip: took a tour of the cabanas, and they were all wonderful! Each has Ocean view, a "floating bed&q...
