“Incredible Family Vacation!”
Reviewed April 2, 2014

This is the best family vacation we have ever had!

Went back to the island for the second time and took our family of 6 this time including kids ages 4, 7, 11, and 13. So much for the kids to do; all positive, healthy, and fun activities that they will remember for a lifetime! The best part was not having phone or internet! The kids found activities using their mind and bodies instead of electronic devices and came back saying this was their favorite vacation ever!

Slickrock has something for everyone to do from active sports to just enjoying this beautiful tropical location; the staff is incredible; couldn't have asked for more!

My delightful review of a week spent on Long Caye (Key) island with the Slickrock.com program can best be expressed by...my journal entry and "On Long Key (Caye) " song that I wrote and our group performed on the island the last night dedicated to the staff:

“As I sit in an Adirondack chair below a rustling palm tree on my last morning on Long Key, I write down thoughts, trying to remember and preserve the best memories from the full week with the adventurous Slickrock program, but still experience the present moment. The warm breezes caress me as I gaze out at the azure waters and the pristine coral reefs where we snorkeled. I recall fondly all the vibrant water sports activities, the delicious meals, the lovely weather and the sea side cabanas. I am at peace. But what really remains in my brain is the caring, dedicated staff, the harmonious group and the remarkable ambiance of the island—from ocean vistas to powerful continuous sea breezes, from remarkable views of coral sea life to welcome warming sunshine, from living on a speck of a coral reef island in the vast sea to the ever present sound of waves at my cabana door. How blessed I was to have experienced something few have ever seen in their life time!”

AND....

On Long Key (Caye)
On Long Key, life is so appealing.
On Long Key, they treat you very well.
On Long Key, the food is so delicious
On Long Key, all is happiness.
La-la-la La-la-la la-la-la la-la Lah!

On Long Ker, the sea is so delightful.
On Long Key, the ski is very blue.
On Long Key, the staff is so helpful.
On Long Key, the breezes blow right through.
La-la-la La-la-la La-la-la La-la-lah!

On Long Key, the diving is much better.
On Long Key, you boat and surf all day.
On Long Key, you tinkle while you snorkel.
On Long Key, life is community.
La-la-la La-la-la La-la-la La-la-lah!

Por Long Key, la vida es mas sabrosa.
Por Long Key, se cuida mucho mas.

Slickrock will energize you !! This atoll is surrounded by gorgeous azure turquoise ocean, full of reefs and fascinating fish. With access to numerous, high-quality water toys, like sea kayaks, wind surfers, surf kayaks, kite surfers, and stand-up paddle boards, you just can't help but feel energized and excited. The guides provide excellent instruction, and it is even possible to have one-on-one lessons to help you master a new skill and feel very confident at a new activity. It is wonderful to be able to swim from shore to a reef, any time you want, and see coral and fish that rival the Great Barrier Reef. Paddling the kayaks out to a farther reef also makes for an active, fascinating adventure in beautiful warm sun and ocean. It is blissful. The cabanas are extremely comfortable and romantic, nestled among the palm trees right along the ocean shore. The cooks are amazing, and eating with all the other guests and guides allows you to meet lots of interesting people. Learning about the off-grid infrastructure and water conservation systems at Slickrock was really interesting. You will be amazed at how much you learn about geology, vegetation, meteorology, and of course, oceanography. We did not do any diving, but the wonderfully friendly staff at Off-the-Wall Dive Shop helped me out with an equipment emergency at a very reasonable price. Even if you don't play volleyball, it was a lot of fun to watch the 5-o'clock game, while enjoying a Bilikin beer before supper. I loved the fact that Slickrock is more like a sports camp than a resort. There is no gift shop, no commercialism, and no crowds to fight through. If you like being active and you enjoy nature and want some superb snorkelling in unbelievably gorgeous surroundings, you will love Slickrock.

I popped down to Slickrock from Portland, Ore., for a half-week Glovers Island trip and it was one of the best trips I have ever taken. This is the opposite of lazing around a hotel pool. The private island is beautiful, and your days fly by with fun activities. Every day at the bountiful breakfast, the trip leader Mark announced activities that he would offer during the day. I joined a five-mile sea-kayak trip to a nature conservancy, took a few guided snorkels, and windsurfed most days. My tiny cabana Seagrape was right on the ocean and a brown booby bird liked to stand on a rock a few inches from me and we would watch the surf together. The bedding was a little rough and no private bath (you have to walk a short distance to comosting toilets) but that is all part of the appeal. The staff is all-around fantastic, and mixes in some interesting TED-type talks about coral biology or geomorphology after dinner in the evenings, while you are enjoying your rum (BYO but they take you to the store before departure) and fresh pineapple/coconut juice (like everything other than the rum, provided). The food was excellent, served family-style, and I ate a lot because I was so active all day. You have to be up for being social with people you have not met before, kind of like going to camp, but my group was full of interesting and nice people, including several who were returning guests.

We loved it -- a lot of support and teaching and high-quality gear for all their many sports. But great relaxing too, free time and lots of options for activities, super food, lots of hammocks, friendly supportive staff, well-oiled system to get to the island and settle in. This is a perfect trip for people who like to rough it in comfort -- trade winds blow through your private cabana, and there are Belikin beers in the dining hall cooler and Paco Pads in the shade. No pool, no spa, no Starbucks, no wifi, no A/C, no bartender, no tennis courts or putting green, just your own private island with a surf break, sandbar, sea kayaks, and raked sand paths under thousands of coconut palms.

Slickrock appears to have become a Belize oriented company and I cannot comment on their land adventure except to say the folks I met on the island were happy with the land program.
You should understand that this is a camp for adults of all ages, many of them Boomers. If you want hot and cold running water and a toilet in your room, romantic dinners by candlelight and room service, this is definitely not the place to go. The rave reviews this place garners are because people are willing to attend what is basically a camp for all sorts of water sports.
The manager and head counselor when we were there were outstanding people. In addition, I have snorkeled and been scuba diving all over the world and have never encountered anyone as full of knowledge, curiosity and joie de vivre as MJ. Snorkel with him and you will discover a whole world in a few feet of reef. The rest of the staff are generally pleasant and helpful. It is certainly a plus for a lot of North Americans that the national language of Belize is English.

This place was fantastic and I can't wait to go back. Slickrock/Long Caye has knowledgeable guides, friendly staff -- everyone including the groundskeeper and the kitchen staff, fantastic food, a variety of activity options every day, quality equipment, a beautiful island. And they send you all the information you could possibly need to prepare for your trip. Heed their advice; they know what they are talking about, and you will enjoy yourself more for it.

You can play as long or as hard as you want, or you can take it easy in a hammock. Non-hammock options include snorkeling, kayaking, kiteboarding, windsurfing, exploring the small island and its tide pools, SUP, paddle/kayak surfing, volleyball, diving with the neighboring dive shop (also very friendly), etc. -- but do bear in mind you are outside, and all activities are weather-dependent. Plan to be flexible as wind conditions may change plans from hour to hour. On our trip, for instance, repeated "northers" limited the kayaking, surfing, and SUP options. However, the resourceful staff always had a variety of good activities ready to go. Wind just died? Quick, let's go kayaking! Wind just picked up? You can snorkel the lee side of the island. Don't know how to windsurf? They will teach you. What an awesome concept! Just go with the flow and you will have a great time.

Like so many others, I was a little nervous about being able to sleep in a palapa hut with no AC, but I slept great, to the sound of the wind in the palapa roof and the waves on the shore. One night we had 30 mph winds and rain, and we still slept like logs. The shower/bathroom facilities were surely no rivals for the San Pedro AI's (not that anybody on this trip would want to stay in one), but were pretty swank compared to primitive camping or even some of the more remote US National Parks. As for the activity level, I do recommend having some level of fitness, and a high level of ability to go with the flow. This place is not for everyone -- and that's not a bad thing!

You may wonder at the price of the trip, which is comparable to staying in an all-inclusive, full-service hotel. But once you're there you will see that it's absolutely reasonable. The level of effort and service, the attention to detail, the quality of equipment, etc. is impressive, plus gas is expensive and it's a long boat ride to get out to the atoll.

Like I said, though, I can't wait to go back. We've already been working to identify friends to bring with us. Thanks, Slickrock!
