Dirty Mcnasty's Hostel
Reviewed January 18, 2014

Within seconds of stepping off the dock we were verbally haand with sed by one of their Rasta street employees of this hostel. He argued that they were over booked which wasn't true and after telling him numerous times we had a room already booked and paid for but he continued to verbally and racially abuse us regardless. We ended up arriving and immediately cancelling our reservation because he was so obnoxious! Receptionist didn't seem to care too much either which was disappointing. The insults did not stop there however, he then followed us down the street yelling insults whilst we tried finding alternative accommodation! Shame because the place looked half decent with an alright vibe.

I recently stayed at Dirty McNasty's Hostel in a private room for 4 nights. Hotel staff was generally friendly and helpful, hostel itself is a bit run down, and they're doing a lot of construction at the moment. They have a decent common area and functional kitchen and breakfast included was decent as well.

Some POSITIVE things: manager nicknamed "smooth" was a cool, chill and responsible guy. They have FREE rum punch every night for guests (and wanderers who come in). The boat tour run out of this hostel (by a guy named "Pops") was the best day I had in Belize and one of the highlights of my 4 month trip! I HIGHLY recommend going on this tour even if you don't stay here, it will run you about BZ100 and is absolutely worth the money.

Some NEUTRAL things: there was definitely no hot water (I don't mind but some may), wifi only works in common areas, construction makes the hostel hazardous in areas so be sure to watch your step.

There are no safes available in the rooms, so be sure to either request no housekeeping, or request housekeeping when you're present. My only NEGATIVE comment is I had some make up stolen (oddly enough). Nothing else went missing and I had no other issues. This hostel is rough around the edges, but do-able.

Ideal for the price- decent breakfast included, free rum punch (a lot!) In the evenings, kitchen facilities, free kayaks, free water. Rooms were big and clean and had lots of fans. Warm water. Is just opposite bellas backpackers. Is a building site atm, but will be much better when done.
Communal area is run down but fine.
I would say that the cleaners threw away some things they thought was rubbish I presume, and then our missing lighter ended up being lent to us by the chef! Little suspicious but hey ho!

This place is dirty, lots of cockroaches and bugs and the kitchen is full of ants. The staff aren't very helpful and are all on 'island time' so they aren't quick to react to any request.
The rooms are old and really hot not to mention cramped.
The whole place looks so run down and this isn't helped by the construction that is going on there. The half built pool attracts swarms of Mosquitos and sea flies.
It does have a decent breakfast although you only get one serving, no seconds.
If I ever visit caye caulker again I would opt for a bungalow or villa on the main strip, never again will I stay at Dirty McNastys!

Great hostel, staff were very friendly and helpful. Free bikes, snorkels and canoes to use. The room had plenty of fans and were cleaned daily. The lockers were underneath the bed and some didn't work. Great selection of breakfast options which are included. Only real downside is the construction work that is going on at the moment, they are extending the property and building a pool so the site is pretty messy!

Checked out after 1 night. The place is a construction site, rubbish all over the place, a mozzie-infested swamp in the middle of the property (apparently going to be a pool someday) that you have to walk through to get from the rooms to the common areas. The rooms themselves are expensive for what you get - hot and stuffy without any real thought to design for the conditions, no a/c unless you pay $20 extra for the privilege, just a pedestal fan, spartan furnishings. To their credit they do offer things like free snorkel/kayak hire (actually a canoe rather than a kayak), free rum punch, and a really decent breakfast. But we found a place just nearby with private rooms for a few $ more which was cool, friendly and felt much more like a hostel that you would expect on an island.

Room Tip: Choose one with a/c or you're gonna sweat

Stayed in a big private room. 2 fans, nice bathroom with towels and everything was clean. Kitchen to use and hammoks for relax. Breakfast included, maybe the lady ho prepairs could be a little bit friendlier... ;-)
