“Stay here!!”
Reviewed December 12, 2013

We stayed here for 5 nights and wish it could have been longer. Caye Caulker is a wonderful place to visit and this was the perfect location to stay. As it faced west, it was possible to watch the sunset every evening from the small beach area or the pier. The pier has been replaced recently and has a new upper deck and seating available. We could also watch lots of different fish and birds in the clear water. The island is very small but there were quite a few tourists when we were there. Everywhere is within easy walking distance but we appreciated being away from the main ‘hustle’ and the private grounds meant we were in wonderful peaceful surroundings. Yet we could walk to the main Front St in a minute or two.

The room was clean and ready, even though the previous occupants had just left. There was a new bathroom door (previously there was a curtain separating the areas), which allowed for a bit more privacy. There was a large fridge, bed, chairs and small kitchen area. The shower has cool water, which is a regular occurrence in CC and it is hot in the Carribean!!! So hot water isn’t needed as you will need a cool shower. The pedestal fan wasn’t working, we let Madi know and a replacement was outside our door when we came back from dinner.

Kayaks are available to use free of charge, although donations are encouraged. All the money Madi receives goes towards the running of the sanctuary (she also has a wish list on her website where people can donate food etc.). I saw kayaks for rent for $10/hr in town so this is a great deal. We used them a few times and were able to go all around the island and out into the sea; I thought this was a great bargain.

Madi is a wonderful hospitable person and has loads of advice regarding the island. She is very busy running the sanctuary as well as the accommodations, but always has time for people. The cats are let out in groups throughout the day; the grounds are large and they are busy doing their own thing so aren’t in your way. I had a look at some of them and they were all clean, healthy and well looked after. A previous reviewer thought there may be fleas around but they were most likely mistaking them for sand flies which are small bugs which like to feast on ankles at dusk and dawn. They are a problem throughout the island and I saw a lot of folks with a lot of bites. Tropical strength insect repellent stopped us from getting more than a couple of nips, although baby oil also works well. None of the cats I saw had any fleas. There are also a couple of dogs who would be happy to play and sit with you.

To say the building is dilapidated is a misnomer. It had a similar appearance to many of the buildings on the island in that a lot of them are pretty old and have been withstanding storms for a long time. I didn’t think it was dilapidated at all. The whole place was cleaned regularly and the yard tidied daily and the room was clean also. In addition they are making other improvements to the building/accommodations.

If you want to enjoy Caye Caulker in peaceful private surroundings where you can walk to the restaurants and bars in a couple of minutes or choose to stay away from the crowd, while supporting a local Belizean who is working very hard to make a difference, then this is the place to stay. This is the first place we have visited that we wanted to return to straight away and P.A.W. would be the only place we would stay on the island.

The boyfriend and I stayed here for two nights. I am a cat lover and fell in love with so many of the sweetest cats here. The owner is doing such an amazing thing with this place and I feel so lucky to have stayed here. We stayed in the back of the house which is a private room with a private bathroom. It is simple but has everything you need- fridge, microwave, bed, decent size room that also includes a table and chair set and room to hang some clothes. The room was clean. I understand that there is also a dorm set up and another room on the premises suitable for couples. There is the most wonderful couple here volunteering for a few months helping out with some infrastructure needs. This is a great place for animal lovers. These cats are loved and well taken care of. They have more room to run around in than you will ever see at an SPCA in the states. I loved staying here knowing that the room rate goes towards feeding wonderful kitties. Seriously please stay here if you love animals because the money you pay for your stay goes directly towards taking care of these abandoned animals and this place could otherwise not exist. It is also a good deal and much cheaper than many other options and more enjoyable than a hostel.

This is also a great location. It is on the back side of the island which has a nice breeze and the property has a nice wooden dock that you can walk out on. It is very peaceful. And it is towards the middle of the island so it is a very short walk to the Split and other fun places to eat or drink at. The shower is decent but no hot water but this is typical on caye caulker. Plus it is warm most of the year so you really don't need hot water heater.

Other than the wonderful kitties walking around in the day and some meows in the morning, you wouldn't know there were 90 or so cats here because they keep it clean and really take care of the cats. I especially love Patches; I wish I could take him home with me :) this is such a special place on a wonderful island.

My husband and I recently stayed at Pause for over a month and had an amazing time. Madi is the most compassionate person that I have ever met, the work that she does is very admirable and most people would probably not care enough to do what she does. We stayed in the beach suite studio apartment, it is right in front of the water and it was beautiful falling asleep listening to the ocean. The apartment was very clean and had everything we needed, the area was safe and quiet and less than 5 minutes walk into town.

I would like to address one of the previous reviews entitled "BEWARE", it sounds like that person did not do very much research on where they were going/staying. The property is old but it is clean and safe, I got a chance to look at all of her rentals while staying there and they are all clean inside, it does not sound like this person even viewed the accommodations? I also booked through Hostelworld and it states very clearly on Pause's page that you need to give 2 weeks cancelation notice or there is 100% charge, I copied and pasted the information for anyone who might be interested in seeing it so here it is below:
Cancellation:
There is a 50% charge for any & all cancellations up to two weeks prior to arrival date.
There is a 100% charge for any cancellations with less than two weeks notice or for failure to cancel your reservation.

It sounds like this person only gave one day notice. Most people book their holiday accommodation in advance so it means that Madi would have lost out on that rental if she did not have tis policy in place. I would also like to point out that she has over 70 very positive reviews on this site and this one person has given a bad review because of their own failure to read all of the information, they really should have given the place a chance, looks can be deceiving! I believe that they really missed out on a spectacular location to spend their time in Caye Caulker. I think it is very wrong to give such a nasty review when they never even stayed there and just because they failed to read the (clearly stated) cancellation policy! You only have to look at the many other reviews to know that what this person is suggesting is not true.

There are also kayaks available to use and a wonderful dock to sit and relax and watch some amazing sunsets. We loved staying at Pause!

I'll try to be succinct. We had booked to stay 5 nights at Pause, initially attracted by the positive reviews on trip-advisor. We inadvertently arrived a day early and so went to look at the property. We found the property to be dilapidated and not where we wanted to spend our time whilst in Caye Caulker. On correspondence with Maddi she has then knowingly and wrongfully allowed us to assume that by canceling we would be liable to forfeit the first nights accommodation as per Hostelworld policy. She has then charged us for the full five nights accommodation. I view this as akin to theft. She may/will claim that it is for the benefit of the animals she houses. However it shows a complete lack of respect for her customers. Be very careful of this business.

My boyfriend and I had an amazing experience staying at Pause hostel and cat sanctuary. The work being done there is really inspirational, and it's great knowing that the money spent staying at Pauses goes directly to funding the sanctuary. There is a dorm room and private room option, and a jetty where you can see some of the best sunsets in the evening. We even borrowed some small kayaks and went out for a bit of a paddle.

We have seen so many street cats and dogs on our travels, many which have been abused. It is great knowing that places like this exist. There are also volunteer options at the sanctuary, so if you have the time, I highly recommend staying and helping out for a few months... we would have loved to, if only we had the time.

If we return to Caye Caulker we will definitely return to Pause!!

We spent a fantastic week on caye caulker staying with Madi and her cats and dogs.

Rooms are decent size very simple but clean. There house is situated with its own dock and small bay where you can sit an watch the sunset. You can even sit on the boat and enjoy the spectacular views. What we liked best was how quiet and serene the area was, away from the hustle and bustle on the busier side of the island.

Some people have reported a smell-we didn't find this and actually Madi keeps the place very very clean! The cat are kept in a separate area and only a few at a time are let out to wander, which is nice because they are so friendly!

It was a joy to meet Madi and contribute to her very worthy cause. We highly recommend anyone on a budget coming to stay with Madi you will not regret it!
Ps:
You must visit the bakery and try the amazing cinnamon rolls located next to the Atlantic bank!
