Caye Caulker Plaza Hotel
Ranked #13 of 19 Hotels in Caye Caulker
Reviewed March 26, 2010

Recently spent four nights at the Plaza Hotel with my three twenty-something kids. We had two rooms on the first floor, which were very clean with comfortable beds. I had trouble getting hot water in the shower, but I think that was user error. The staff was very helpful and friendly. Breakfast was not offered while we were there. Not really sure why, but we had breakfast elsewhere on the island which was very good. There are only two drawbacks, 1) it’s not on the water, but nothing is far from the water on Caye Caulker; and 2) the water smelled awful, like sulfur, but I have a feeling that is something out of the hotel’s control. It got better as it ran. I had read a lot of horror stories about hotels on Caye Caulker, so this hotel was a pleasant surprise. I don’t need posh, but clean is very important to me and I would recommend this hotel to other travelers.

I was really nervous about this place as I'd only seen a couple of pictures online, but turned out to exceed my expectations. Conveniently located (keep walking straight from the water taxi station to the middle street)--the rooms were well-furnished, complete with a mini-fridge, and very clean. The shower head was nicer than at my own house! The balcony off our room offered a fun vantage point for people-watching at the busy intersection below (which was totally quiet after about 8 PM) and we were always comfortable with a fan, AC, and free in-room wifi.

Hard to say anything negative about a free breakfast, but in the spirit of full disclosure, the breakfast here--right down to the coffee--is impressively bad (and amusingly, although we asked for it at 8:30 three days in a row, it came at 0745, 0800 and 0900). It comes from the Chan's Fast Food next door, so I probably wouldn't recommend going there, either! Luckily, it's located right next door to a great--and cheap--bakery and down the street from the fantastic hidden-gem Sea Garden Cafe (freshly-made when you order--right down to the tortillas--salbutes and panades, fantastic lobster burritos, delicious smoothies--go there...do it!).

As most of the beaches in Caye Caulker are privately owned by the hotels abutting them, you have to hike it to the Split to get some beach space. We never really had a problem, though, finding a shady spot to camp out there. If you're going to stay inland, I highly recommend the Plaza for it's rooftop deck--360 degree views of the island, great people-watching spot, and a nice, breezy place to spend the afternoon if the beach at the Split is getting buggy or you're just feeling too lazy to hike back to the beach!

The Plaza on Caye Caulker was awesome! They did such a good job taking care of us. The hotel is affordable, but still very comfortable. The Island is small, so walking from one side to the other is easy and fun! The food on the Island is excellent; but the breakfast "included" is just fast food, and it isn't very good. We recommend the bakery that is literally right next door, it has some amazing bread!!

It took awhile for us to find an availability for any hotel on Caye Caulker as we didn't really look until the week before we left. I mass emailed a bunch of hotels and Caye Caulker Plaza was one that replied with rooms available for our group of 6. After reading other reviews from TripAdvisor, we rented 3 rooms, $80/night/room, we stayed 2 nights and were very happy with our choice.
This hotel is only 2 short blocks walk from the Caye Caulker Water Taxi ($12.50 roundtrip pp from Belize City). They were supposed to send someone to get us but I guess they forgot, not that it really mattered considering how close they were. The front desk did apologize when they found out though and offered to arrange someone to help us with our luggage when we left.
We got 3 different rooms, all on the 3rd floor which is a walk-up. You may have to carry your luggage depending on there is any help, our lady got the guy from next door to carry our suitcases. My room was a double-double room but they are all essentially the same. There is a key that functions as a key to the electricity for the lights, fan and tv. There is an AC that is remote controlled, they ask you to turn everything off to conserve energy when you leave. There is a fridge that you have to turn on to use. There is no safe to lock up valuables. There is no phone so don't expect wakeup service if you need to get up early. I'd recommend bringing a travel alarm or a watch that does that. There is also wifi internet you need to get a password for but connection was slow and sometimes iffy.
The rooms are clean and the beds are comfortable. The bathrooms are clean, the only problem was the showers that tended to leak water outside the stall because there is a gap in the glass door so be prepared to put towels on the floor. We also found a water roach one day but we took care of it and didn't have any problems after that. If you walk up to the roof you'll get a beautiful view of the water to the west. There wasn't any coffee that I knew of up here but there was a picnic bench and 2 lounge chairs so you could always bring your own food.
They provided us with a buffet breakfast (toast, fresh fruit, sausage, eggs, potatoes, milk, juice) the first day which was great! We crossed the street to Chan's Kitchen for this. The next day they did it room service style which was just ok.
It is only a 15min walk to The Split which is the only swimmable area to the island. There are tons of restaurants that are right in the area but then again everything on the entire island is close by and walkable. There are supermarkets, ice cream shops, tour companies and bars on the island so you're pretty much set.
The staff was very helpful and friendly. I was very happy with my stay here!

We were so pleased with the amenities of this new nicely appointed small hotel: quiet, great air conditioning, fridge, safe, modern bathroom, comfortable beds, some balconies, roof deck with view, breakfast and 24hr service desk. Joanna and her staff were always helpful whether we needed a driver (Lulu), manicure, quick flight to the airport in Belize City, wake-up call, laundry, or a fantastic place for dinner (Rosies). Even when an emergency arose and the ATM was down for 4days, the family came to our rescue. This kind of support service is not common on Caye. The location was also perfect! We walked everywhere yet the hotel was on a quiet corner away from the busier tourist Front Street. Overall a great stay and look forward to a return trip.

We stayed here two nights and it was definitely a great place to stay on Caye Caulker. The island is so small that every hotel is close, but the plaza hotel is right in the middle. It is two short blocks from the water taxi and right off the main street corner. The hotel is new and the rooms were very American and modern. This was the most Americanized hotel we stayed at. There was a safe in the room and a complimentary breakfast across the street. There was cable TV and air conditioning. They had a rooftop with a nice view and the staff was friendly. NOTE: there is only 1 ATM on the island and it was broken when we were there. We got by on the little money we had and ended up using our credit cards whenever possible, although the credit card machines were not always working - just an FYI. The front desk was staffed 24 hours so we felt really safe. I would recommend staying here.

We stayed at the Plaza Hotel for two nights and had a very nice stay. The bed was comfortable and the bathroom was the most updated we had encountered in our travels in Belize. The hotel was just a hop, skip and a jump away from the water taxi station. Also all the restaurants and bars were super close (although nothing is especially far on tiny Caye Caulker). Note to beach hunting travelers - the Plaza Hotel is not located right on the beach/water if that is what you are looking for in your accommodations. Note to all travelers - make sure you have enough cash when you get to Caye Caulker, the 1 ATM on the island was broken when we went and we went three days surviving on our credit cards which is doable, but not that fun especially when you can't get a drink at I&I Reggae Bar (which I highly recommend!)
