We had an excellent snorkeling trip with Jose and Joe on the Anwar, Joe is an excellent guide and full of information about the reef. He was great at pointing out things that we would have missed including 2 moray eels, several crustaceans and many fishes, And swimming with the sharks and rays was really a unique experience.

We just returned from Belize last week. After two great excursions with Ragamuffin Tours while staying on Caye Caulker, we signed up for a full-day snorkeling excursion with Anwar Tours on our last day as that tour gets you back in time for the last boat taxi back to the mainland (and unfortunately, Ragamuffin did not). We were so disappointed with our day with Anwar Tours. It was not even comparable to our experiences with Ragamuffin at all. We were told that usually they have between 10 and 12 people on each tour, which in our opinion would still be a lot of people for a boat the size of Carlos'. But on this day, there were 15 clients and 3 guides. It was way too many people. It felt unsafe and crowded on the boat (we were all on top of each other) and snorkeling in a group that big with 1 guide is a completely mediocre experience. They said that given the size of the group they would split us into two groups when snorkeling, each with a guide, but that did not happen. The knowledge of the guides was totally subpar in our opinion and we didn't explore Hol Chan Reserve to the same extent at all with Anwar Tours. Finally, we were given one small packet of water and a piece of limp chicken on a bun for lunch that they left sitting out in the sun for an hour at one of the snorkeling spots.

Having done two days with Ragamuffin (great guides, suitable ratio of guide:people (1:8), great homemade lunch, fresh ceviche, rum punch, all the water you can drink!), I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them every time over Anwar. It just wasn't comparable in any way.

12 of us did an all day trip caver tubing/zip line tour to Caves Branch with Anwar. It was awesome! They took us on their boat across to the mainland, up the Belize River a couple miles to a landing. Where, after a light breakfast we boarded a bus (think old school bus) for the 1 hour ride to Caves Branch. They then went with us along with the river guide for the 45-60 minute hike to the 4th cave tube entrance where we split up into 2 groups and spent about an hour tubing. After a buffet lunch on site a lot of the group went zip lining, they really seemed to enjoy it. Then back to the bus for the trip back to their boat. They provided beer rum punch soft drinks and water. Make sure you do your homework and plan the trip when a cruise ship is not in port, don’t think the experience with the tubing/zip lining would have been the same with a 1000 “cruisers”! Also be prepared, their boat is good size but can be a rough/bouncy ride if it is choppy on the ride back and forth! Otherwise can’t say enough positive things!

This was a great tour of the New river and the ruins at Laminai. We left from Caye Caulker on their own private boat (not the water taxi as some do) and had a thrilling (if not rough because choppy seas) ride across to the mainland. A great ride through the mangroves to the small village of Bomba. A light breakfast was served here. From there we boarded a "chicken bus" through the countryside. This too was a bit of a bumpy ride because the road has been neglected but I loved geting a taste (literally) of the mainland this way. We went past farms and savannahs on the way to the third leg of the trip. We boarded another boat here with a new guide for the 27 mile journey up the New river. Flora and fauna were observed and pointed out by our guide on the way to Lamanai. The Mayan site called Lamanai is a wonderful way to get a sense that civilization and its peak and this trip was the highlight of our trip to Belize. A very delicious lunch was served and then the trip was reversed to arrive back at Caye Caulker before sunset. Whew! very tired but thrilled to have gone.

I have lived on the Caye for 12 years. When I have visiting family or friends staying on the caye that want to see a Mayan Ruin. I always suggest Anwar Tours first because after sending people dozens and dozens of times in the past I haven't ever heard anything but positive feedback. Normally when you book a mainland Jungle type tour it usually...(but not always if booked with a Caulker tour guide company)... involves meeting your transportation in Belize City. Your tour kinda starts after you "get" to Belize City...then "get" to your transport...then "get" to your destination. Anwar has mainland tours that leave from Caye Caulker. You meet at the office on Front Street...get your gear if you need it...and get in the boat. Your tour starts and stops a maximum of 10 minutes walking distance from front street accommodations. In comparison you may have a 45 minute Water Taxi ride (usually at your cost)...and mainland ground transportation to endure before you feel like you've started your tour. Don't get me wrong...you're in Belize...driving through the jungle surrounded by so much history and culture is far from tedious!!! But after climbing Mayan Pyramids and exploring these amazing places all day long its nice to end your tour within walking distance of your hotel. Whenever I've taken the tour to Altun Ha...Erico "Rico" Novelo was the Guide. Once on the boat you head west towards the mainland. This is where the cool and (from what I know...) pretty unique part of the tour starts. You enter a tropical lagoon and follow it to the mouth of the Northern River. Instead of a long drive on a highway...most of your transportation to Altun Ha is spent motoring up a jungle river with Rico stopping and explaining the interesting stuff you just wouldn't see without him there. The river/boat part stops at a place called Bamba. The talented woodworking residents have small booths and shops set up with an amazing array of tropical hardwood products. (Hint...sometimes prices are more negotiable on the leg home but don't expect unique and already well priced pieces to still be there when you get back) It's been awhile but you used to then get in a bus and you have a short drive to Altun Ha. Rico takes you around and explains what your seeing. All licenced tour guides in Belize are required to take courses on the history and ecology of Belize and are quite informed but Rico really does know his country. After just the right amount of time at Altun Ha you go to Maruba Jungle Resort for lunch. It's a very unique and long standing resort set on a large tract of Belizean jungle. After lunch and a swim in the pool it's back to Bamba and the waiting boat to get the last pieces of Belize hard wood art and head home. The tours Ive taken with Anwar have never been bottomless rum punch and cranking reggae tours. I always felt like I was on a professionally run and executed tour that I actually learned something I didn't know before.
