“Beautiful oasis on a great beach”
Reviewed July 8, 2013

Great location, beautiful rooms and beach, and a very kind, attentive staff. Only downsides were getting bitten by mosquitos at the onsite restaurant (they promised to deal with them) and somewhat expensive food and beverages (normal for resorts). From our boat trips along the island it looks like X'tan has the best beach on the island. Overall we loved it and can't wait to go back!

I will start by saying that I have traveled all over the world, and have stayed at everything from the typical bed and breakfast, to 5-star hotels and resorts. Never have I found a place that felt so much like home, surrounded by people who felt like long lost friends. The positive energy generated by X-Tan Ha is contagious, and happy spirits abound in the guests and the staff. No request is too petty for the staff, and there is always a smiling face ready to accommodate your every whim. Don't get me wrong, this isn't a posh resort with uniformed wait-staff hovering around every corner. It's something far more special. It's simplicity is it's greatest asset. Upon arrival, you are greeted by a dock stretching into the crystal-clear, turquoise water. After stepping onto the dock, a short walk will take you to the open-air, thatched roof bar, where one of two wonderful bar-tenders (Elder or Hill) are ready to quench your thirst with a hand-crafted concoction, or an ice-cold Belikin beer. Immediately behind the bar is the quaint office, where sweet, young Miriam is always ready to arrange any number of activities for guests, such as reef fishing, snorkel or scuba-diving adventures, or treks to see the Mayan ruins in the rain forest. Dotting the beach are several two-story beach style houses which each provide a million dollar view of the calm, turquoise sea. The accommodations are designed to give one the feel of being in one's own tropical abode, with full kitchenettes, and bedrooms with high raftered ceilings and hand-crafted, stained wood armoires and night stands. Island-appropriate knick-knacks dot the rooms, adding to the charm. Every morning I would awake to the sound of the breeze coming in off the water and blowing across the wide covered porch, gently rapping at the door like a dear friend calling me outside to play. And every morning I was happy to oblige! Each day was began with a breakfast at the restaurant at X-Tan Ha, where they serve the best French Toast I have ever eaten (stuffed with cream cheese and dusted with powdered sugar), served with crisp bacon and a hot cup of Belizian coffee! Lunch and dinner were just as amazing, and I quickly discovered that one needn't venture away from the resort to find any better cuisine (BTW, they have some of the best cheeseburgers I have ever eaten)!! There is a beautiful pool nestled in the middle of the resort, and they are getting ready to break ground on another amazing pool which will be situated at the back of the resort. The managers of the resort are two of the nicest folks one will ever meet, and they are honestly concerned that every guest leave the resort with one goal - a return trip! I can say that I have found my new home away from home, and I will be back again soon! If you are looking for a place where you feel a million miles away from the rat-race, yet not completely removed from modern necessities such as wi-fi and food that would make your mama proud, then this is your place. X-Tan Ha, I love you!

Room Tip: Best views are second-story rooms, but ground-level rooms stay cooler during the heat of the day!

At X'tan Ha Resort we can never get enough of hearing our guests using words like "felt so much like home" and feeling as if you are a part of a family. This is so simply because we all enjoy what we do and in turn will always go that extra mile for anyone of our guests. We thank you for choosing to stay with us and of course for your kind words. We do look forward to hosting you once again at "your home away from home".

This will be my first review ever. There's just so much to share, it's a magnetic urge, a personal promise, or whatever drawing me to write a review on X'tan Ha. Where to begin...
See there appears to be these people trying to get this resort afloat, again, and they're doing everything right! They are truly lovey people who have hired really great staff and everything working in unison is so apparent and thoughtful. We travel a lot! Most places promise this or that, or what you see on the website photos is just not so, we hear a lot of excuses. This is SO not the case at X'tan Ha. They have so much more than meets the eye, more than you would expect, and all that you need from new equipment including kayaks, snorkel gear, plush beach chairs, new bright umbrellas, sand toys for kids, games in the office, paddle boards, new, bright adirondack chairs at the end of the pier to even a sailboat they brought out for anyone's use on our last day. The rooms and the outside of the little apartment style places are JUST as they appear on the website, vibrant, clean and full of color! A great little bar awaits you at the base of the pier and continues to service you throughout your stay. The beach is cleared of washed up sea grass several times a day (though there's not much to begin with), it makes you feel like you're at a five star resort in Bali there's so much attended to. They've also cleared a lot of the turtle grass away in the water making X'tan Ha one of the only swimmable beaches on the Caye, The town of San Pedro did nothing for us. But there is a free water taxi in to town twice a week if you want to check it out, or buy some groceries since there is a full kitchen in each room. We also brought food from home. The managers, Oliver and his wife and their dog Buddy, regularly stroll the beach and make sure everyone's having a good time, and not in a kiss-up sort of way either. We really appreciated the laid back sort of atmosphere whereby you see how much they are all truly trying that you want to respect their few rules and their property to the best of your ability. There was a slight upset in the kitchen and though the managers stressed, we all bonded together and let them know it would all work out and we were not put out at all, though they probably thought we were, and we would make it work. Because they were showing how much they cared, we all wanted to give back.

All-in-all, it was our best vacation while living in Central America the past two years, and at a great price, too. We made some great friends, too. (miss you already Lori, Lynn, Renee, Larry and the guys!) We hope that we may be able to visit again in the future for not just an amazing resort, accommodations, snorkeling, swimming, playing and food, but for the staff and management too! Sending you much love and luck! You're doing everything right!
(Can't use enough exclamations here!)

Love,
Margaret, Johnny, Ruby and Ivy

Room Tip: The poolside rooms are just as great as the beachfront ones so just depends what you want.

We just returned home to the US and we already miss the beautiful sunrises and our oceanfront villa. It was everything we were hoping for and more! My husband and I went with two other couples and we had a blast, kayaking, snorkeling, paddle boarding and fishing. What a great vacation and by far the best resort on Ambergris Caye. The only resort with a beautiful beach and water to swim in right in front of the resort.

The food was delicious and the staff was super friendly. A special thanks to Elder and Hill (the bartenders) for making sure we had what we needed to drink! Mariam the office manger took care of everything from the time we got there to the time we left. Hassle and worry free, they made getting there a breeze by arranging all our transportation to and from the resort/airport. THANK YOU!!! I would definitely return and highly recommend this resort to couples and families. Everyone was so friendly, just a great place to visit and vacation!

We will see you again- Jason and Renee'

Room Tip: Oceanfront villa for sure, but the poolside villas are just as beautiful as well.

Took a two week solo trip to Belize in June and came across this resort while checking reviews on TripAdvisor. Let me just say that these reviews (while all great) do not do X'tan Ha justice. When you land in San Pedro you'll get a great island feel from the get go. You hop on the complimentary water taxi to the resort and get an amazing view of the coast while you check out some of the other resorts on the way to X'tan Ha. If you have any second thoughts on whether or not you've chosen the right resort, they'll all be put to rest as the colored roof tops enter into your line of site and you see Miriam or Ludrick waiting with a rum punch. This place feels like home from the get go as a member of the staff loads up your bags and takes them to your villa while you get a tour of the resort. Bartenders Hill and Elder keep the drinks flowing all day/night and are great entertainment while sitting at the bar. A big thanks goes out to both of them for making my stay an ultimate experience and it was awesome getting to know them both. Oliver and Della are great managers that are always around, day and night keeping things running smoothly at the resort and even sitting down to talk to guests and get to know them individually. Dre and the rest of the crew keeping the grounds immaculate need to be recognized as well because that place can have a beach full of people and still look untouched with the guys raking up sea grass and keeping the sands clear of any and all debris. If you head over to the restaurant you'll most likely be greeted by Carlos who runs the restaurant and does a terrific job as well. If you're seeing a pattern here it's because everyone at this resort is happy, positive, and helpful and those are just a few of the great qualities of this place. The villas are cozy with ample A/C, TV, a fridge, and cook top. You can get a fresh drinking water supply as needed and there really isn't a bad view whether you decide on pool or sea view. You can plan your excursions through the front desk if you want to venture out or take any of the complimentary water sport equipment provided by the resort and spend the day in the ocean. You can't lose with X'tan Ha and i'm confident that anyone heading to Belize will have as great a time as I did. Looking forward to returning with my wife later on this year or early next. Needless to say, she was jealous of the pictures i sent home and demands we head back together (she didn't have to twist my arm).

We’ve stayed at a number of Tropical resorts (St Martin, Jamaica, Antigua, Turks & Caicos, Puerto Rico, Kauai, Cabo San Lucas), but this is the 1st that’s ever left us with a feeling that we really need to share our experience.

We reached out to X’Tan Ha through their website [www.xtanha.com] for prices/availability. X’Tan Ha offers an airline employee discount & runs resort specials often, so contact them via email to check. Prior to arrival we ordered groceries from Mata Grande Grocery [www.matagrandegrocery.com] & would highly recommend them (our groceries were in our fridge before we arrived)! You can also inquire about specific food items you are looking for that are not listed on the Mata grocery website, very accommodating food service. Thanks Mandy!

Once we landed in Belize City we needed to book a 15 minute commuter flight to San Pedro. Our options were Tropic Air or Maya Island Air. We did not pre-book this flight due to all we had read online prior to our arrival. These companies run many flights daily…..like a bus service. We approached both counters (right next to each other) & checked into prices/flights. Both services offer airline employees a discount. We decided on Tropic Air (a tad bit more $). It was a wonderful flight…..

We (husband, wife, kids 5 & 7 yrs) arrived at X’Tan Ha in June 2013 for 10 days. The sand is some of the softest & the water is as warm/clear as a bath (looks just like the pics on their website). The resort itself is colorful, small (28+/- cabins) & remote. The rooms are not “plush” or “Ritz” quality….so don’t come with standards of marble, robes & sunken tubs in mind. They’re honestly more like little beach cabins, just perfect “For Livin’ the Beach Life”. They are a GREAT value & the bed is large/comfy!

WiFi is free in your room & throughout the resort (no problems receiving email). Also, the resort has plenty of beach toys in the office for kids….no need to pack any. On many days we were the only ones on the beach. Conch shells are everywhere in the water! We saw stingrays, barracuda, bonefish, hermit crabs, soft shell crabs, conch, lizards, jellyfish, birds of all kinds ….all this from the dock & beach! The resorts “Sunday Beach BBQ” is a must!!! If you have a child who is a picky eater, you will find the resort restaurant has chicken fingers/fries & the outdoor bar has pizza.

Typically when we stay at a resort we relax, have a great time then pack up & go back home…..easy. At this resort it was difficult to leave because of some WONDERFUL employees:
*Andres (Dre) took pristine care of the beach/resort grounds. This man’s the hardest worker I’ve EVER met. He also has a gift that’s unfortunately rare in the tourism industry, it’s “Customer Relations”. It would be a positive impact to X’Tan Ha’s revenue growth & visitor return ratio to place this man in a “Guest Activities/Entertainment Coordinator” position.
--Future visitors, look this man out & chat with him. He’ll start your day off right!--

*Angel is the resort “Multi-Tool” - he does it all. He’ll handle any maintenance, electrical, plumbing or mechanical need there is. He even cut open a coconut for us one day by the pool to eat the meat! Neat experience…..not the same when we tried this at home!

*PetroNiro (spelling??) is the resort Security. It was so nice to know that while your family’s sleeping there is someone outside keeping you safe. We also enjoyed our before bed strolls on the dock with Petro; educating us all about Belize.
--Future visitors, introduce yourself & shake his hand - he’s a great man.--

*Last but not least, the “Bar Extraordinaire Team” of Elder & Hill. Search & read about these 2 on all the travel websites…..they’re awesome & have MANY local tips/connections. My daughter enjoyed Elder making blue ”icy” drinks & the flower for her hair. He’ll also take your song requests & play them on the beach (great DJ)! My son connected with Hill over “Root Beers” (thanks for the daily supply).
--Hill, when we were on the dock departing & you rode up on the motorbike…..you instantly moved to Super Hero status! You are a true LEGEND & Shark Boy will find a way to see you again my friend. …….”NO WORRIES"--

The only CON that I want to let future visitors know of is the mosquitoes. Evidently during this time of year they’re especially plentiful. I know guests would appreciate it if the resort would look at preventative measures that are used at other tropical resorts to reduce the mosquito population. Or at least a mosquito net for undisturbed sleep.

Visitor Tips: Bring empty sports water bottles, sunscreen, waterproof camera, OFF spray, liquid Benadryl & Hydrocortisone cream (for bug bites) & load the “Magic Jack” app on your tablet for any International calls you’ll need to make if your cell service isn’t available in Belize (US Cellular is not). There are no phones in the X’Tan Ha rooms. The front office offers guests the use of their office printer if needed. Please note that $1.00 US equals $2.00 Belize!

To the friendly guests we met:
* Kirsten (retired fitness teacher) - You’ve got spunk! Thanks for the Pirate Ship fun & memories of Mexico Rocks (twice)!
* San Diego couple - You’re an absolutely lovely family & your son is the best baby! Enjoy your bright & beautiful future.

My husband and I just stayed here for our 5 year anniversary. I can't say enough about this place. The value was great for such an incredible place. We booked a sea view villa (I recommend 3A) and I never got I over the stunning views from our balcony! The gorgeous water and beach just steps away. In fact, a lot of locals told us this resort has the best beach on the island. The staff work around the clock to keep it clean and free of sea grass and debris. Speaking of staff, they were so sweet! From the managers and their dog, buddy, to the guys always raking the beaches...everyone always had a smile on their face and were eager to help ensure you have a perfect time. Hill, the bartender, was very funny and outgoing and helped us on numerous occasions by letting us use his cell phone trying to contact our dive instructor. They welcomed us with complimentary drinks as we were checking in. One of the best things I love about this resort is you really feel like you're getting away from it all. It doesn't feel at all crowded or overrun with the "spring break" kind of crowd. It's very family oriented and creates a very quiet and relaxing atmosphere. They have so many complimentary activities: kayaks, paddle boarding, snorkel gear, etc. We would go out to Mexico Rocks everyday (a 15 min kayak trip) and would see all kinds of fish, coral, rays, and even nurse sharks! If you go around 3-4, fisherman tend to chum the water and there will be more sharks and rays to see. The food is great (and I'm a picky eater) and plenty of selections. Although, our best meals were in town at Wild Mangoes and Caprise. We had such a great time here and can't wait to come back!

Thanks guys we are happy that you enjoyed your stay with us, but more so that you were able to relax and get a feel of the people and staff here at the resort. Our aim is to ensure that all guests are not only treated as family, but also that they feel as if they are the only ones here, which i believed was achieved based on your comments. We are hopeful that you will be spending another anniversary with us here at X'tan Ha Resort.
