“TERRIBLE & DIRTY”
Reviewed July 5, 2010

Don't waste your money on what seems like a good deal on this place. This place doesn't look anything like those photos posted! There is trash, boards, and glass everywhere. They say they have A/C available but that is a JOKE as they have just screens for the windows and a portable A/C that slides in a little hole on the door. It is really hard to sleep when ALL night you hear people screaming and cursing! Also, the staff are not willing to work with you at all, doesn't matter how nice you are too them! I recommend checking this place out before you pay them anything, TRUST me they will NOT give you your money back!!!! Or even ask the local people that live on the island they will tell you the truth about this place!! One last thing.... watch out for the bed bugs!!!

MANAGEMENT RESPONSE TO "TERRIBLE & DIRTY"

Our website pictures were taken by management or e-mailed to us by previous guests, what
you see on our website is what you get and hopefully more as we work hard to constantly improve!! Every morning the beach is picked up by employee's or the town board of San Pedro.
There are no boards or glass around the Conch Shell? We have hurricane shutters on all windows, besides the screens for wind/storms-these can also be seen on our website pictures? Our employee's, 2 to be exact, have prompted the many positive reviews on our site. I have received many lovely emails complimenting their excellent work ethic in room care, helpfulness and customer service skills..you can find many examples in the other reviews! Lastly, our guests, as one can read in other positive reviews, love the temporpedic beds!
To maintain the warranty and longevity of these "spendy" beds we chose to place their recommended "spendy" barriers which we constantly maintain on a weekly basis! So keep in mind that the last comment regarding bed bugs could be confusion with poor hygiene or sand fleas, which the later is common in low lands throughout Belize. One must always remember "throughout our lives every field of flowers contains a few thorns, just remember to smell the roses"!

We stayed at the Conch Shell for 2 weeks at the end of April through May 9th. Joan, the owner, was great helping us with setting up a week w/her, we couldn't make up our minds for our other week, so after emailing with her a couple times & finding her so nice & helpful we booked our second week with th eConch Shell. And we were very happy with our choice. 40 feet from the Caribbean Sea, 40 feet to Cholo's Bar (they claim the coldest & cheapest beer on the beach, I checked & they are...). We walked everywhere from the hotel. The beds were great, we slept very well each night. We stayed up on the second floor, had great breezes, a good place for a late afternoon cocktail & a Belizian cigar from down the street a couple blocks.. The room was very clean & had maid serice every day. The room was tastfully decorated & not overly done. Joan asked if there was anything else the room needed, I said maybe a couple hooks on the wall to hang clothes. 2 days later we had hooks on the wall. There is a nice little grocery store around the corner where we could get almost anything we needed.
If you are looking for a nice place to stay & not spend all of your vaction money on a room, stay with the Conch Shell. It was well worth the price & more. I guess you could spend a lot more & "brag" about your fancy hotel & how much you spent on it, or do like we did stay at a great place & have more for great food & drinks on the beach. And the staff at the Conch Shell can help you set up some very nice activities out on the water.
Writing this makes me want to go back.
Stay here, you will be very happy with the location, the room, the bed, how clean it is, the staff & with Joan, she's great!

We stayed in one of the upstairs room (highly recommended) with the most beautiful views over the sea,
The room was very spacious with a kitchenette, fridge, TV (Cable), two very comfy beds with memory foam mattresses, on suite toilet and shower, ceiling fan and there was an air conditioning unit available (for a charge) which we never used or needed.
The room we had was on the end so we had 3 windows one facing the sea.
The rooms also have WIFI so you can keep in touch with friends and family back home.

Out side the room there is a very large balcony with seating tables and hammocks for everyone to use, with the sea only 20 feet away there was always a nice breeze to keep you cool, and you can just hear the water breaking over the reef, very relaxing..Coming down from the balcony onto the beach there is a foot bath to stop you dragging sand round the rooms.

The rooms were cleaned daily by a very friendly lady who helped us out with things to do, overall the staff couldn't do enough for you, but weren't "in your face" all the time.

The Inn is located just on the edge of the very centre of town, so there is no need to hire a golf cart unless you have the need to explore the whole of the island as everywhere is within bare foot walking distance.
My only complaint would be that water pressure was a bit hit and miss, but according to the bar man at my favourite watering hole (La Playa Lounge) this was the same over the whole island due to water shortages at the time.

Over all, this was the best holiday I have had in San Pedro since I started going there in the 1970's and this was due partly to staying at the Conch Shell Inn.

I am glad we chose three rooms on the second level because of the great view and the really big veranda with lots of chairs and tables, where my friends and I could hang out.

The rooms are rather big, the beds comfortable (good mattresses).

The bathrooms are a bit small, but ok.

One of the piers in front of the hotel has a generator running at odd times of the day, at least it sounded like it, which made quiet relaxation a bit difficult, and the whole area is rather noisy, also at night, which is to be expected at a location almost in the middle of town and right at the beach.

Nice restaurants and shops are within easy reach.

There were some small hiccups such as no water in the pitchers in the rooms at the arrival day (it had been mentioned in the book and after I said something they were filled the next day), one of the remotes not having batteries, the safe not being open as expected and the water pressure in 2 out of three rooms more of a trickle. The manager was friendly and tried to fix things, but sometimes it took a while. I would recommend that the rooms are checked before new guests check in, to make sure everything is in order.

The manager helped organize a golf cart, which went well, although the price she gave me was a lot higher than what they actually charged.

What I personally found annoying was that full payment for the entire stay was due at arrival, although I had made a deposit, and the credit card payment was done three times by mistake, which was later fixed with the bank. Still, this should not have happened and put a damper on my friends mood because there were two days where they did not know if they could use their credit card. I also had arranged a special rate which I did not get for the two other rooms.

I had ordered a taxi for 6 am on our departure date which did not arrive, so after 15 minutes we stopped one that drove by. One of our friends had to catch a plane in town, so that was a bit unnerving.

All in all it is a nice place and it was OK for our group, although we found it a bit overpriced. Wireless is definitely a plus.

It would have been more pleasant without the hiccups, but if they are remedied, I would gladly give more points the next time.

We found The Conch Shell to be a great place to stay. It's location is perfect! You are right on the beach and the town is just behind you. The rooms are very clean and the beds comfortable. Our housekeeper was friendly and helpful, and the service was great. Because the hotel is smaller and has a spacious upper deck, we really got to know and enjoy our neighbors.

The price is moderate, so you can save your money for all the fun and wonderful restaurants. Included at the hotel is a list of their "favorites" around the island. This book includes restaurants, tours, and information while visiting Belize. We found it to be most helpful. The Conch Shell is a real treasure!

This was my first time in Belize and i checked reviews here before booking with the Conch Shell Inn. The price was fantastic and the location was excellent. The room was very spacious, had a mini fridge, double beds, cable tv with all the stations, and great maid service.

The only minor issues were that we stayed on the first floor, so you could easily hear things going on outside, which is not good if you're trying to take a nap, but Hey- you're in Belize, so there's really too much to do! The water pressure was also a little bit low on the shower, and the room really could have used a full size mirror and a safe. Apparently, the safes are located on the second level rooms.

Otherwise, I was very happy with my stay, especially for the price. The owner and maid were both really sweet and tried to make us as comfortable as possible. There is tons around nearby- there are several businesses for recreational activities, there are restaurants both ways along the beach, and behind the hotel is a street with even more shops and restaurants. There is a beautiful view of the ocean with docks nearby to swim and snorkel around.

I really loved how spacious and clean the rooms were-- very well-kept, and it was a bonus to have the cable tv. The mattresses were those very nice memory foam ones, and we slept very comfortably. I highly doubt you will find a nicer room for a better value than here. This is not by any means a luxury resort, so if that is what you are looking for, this is not the place. However, for a budget lodging, this is by far, an excellent place to stay. I wouldn't hesitate to stay here again.

If your thinking about visiting the Cayes in Belize, the Conch Shell is perfect! My room is meters from the sea with dive shops up and down the beach offering everything from scuba and jet ski's. There are also plenty of great restaurants and bars along the sea front where you can get a real taste of Belize.

The rooms are well equiped with clean (daily) comfortable beds, plenty fans (no need for a/c), hot shower and toilet en-suite and a fridge to keep your beers cold for when you get back from diving, Cable TV with countless channels in English, oh and Wi-Fi!!

They have great package deals if you plan on staying 5 or 7 nights (which you should) and you can book online at:http://ambergriscaye.com/conchshell/
