Heed the warnings about it being noisy! It is directly in front of the ferry terminal, which is very convenient but there is quite a bit of foot traffic. And as someone mentioned Cholos, a locals bar, is right next door. It closes relatively early though so that's not much of a problem. The 5:30 am garbage truck is more disruptive.
We stayed here pre and post sailboat charter and found it a convenient base, close to shopping, restaurants and bars. It's clean and very reasonably priced. And Ivan, Vivian and Marie were great, keeping things clean, available at all hours, very helpful friendly folks.
We stayed both upstairs and down. I liked the upstairs room, the glass block bathroom let in lots of light and had better views. Downstairs was shadier and the room had a better storage with a nice dresser for clothes etc.
Try to avoid rooms one and six which are right next to the alley where the ferry traffic and garbage truck pass by, and are across the way from the bar. One night there was a huge concert in the park in honour of Bob Marley's birthday and we were worried we'd be kept awake all night but the sound didn't carry that far.
The Conch Shell really can't be beat for the price if you're staying beach front downtown. Quaint rooms, efficient and friendly staff, handy to everything.
