Belizean Reef Suites
Reviewed January 21, 2013

We have stayed at Belizean Reef multiple times and will definitely be going back. The property is ideally located at the southern edge of San Pedro (yes, it's near the airport, but the planes are 12-seaters and don't fly much after dark) where you can walk to anything you want but are not staying right in the middle of business district.

There are several docks right out front where local dive shops and tour operators can pick you up (The Palms is easiest), a small grocery only a few blocks away (Save-On, near the airport), and Ramon's dock (2 properties away) has some great fish under it if you are looking for a local place to swim around with your snorkel. We've regularly seen rays, lobsters, eels, and plenty of fish under there. It's not reef snorkeling, but it's a pleasant afternoon activity. Beaches in San Pedro are pretty poor, but Ramon's is as good as any around.

All of the units have fantastic views of the sea and reef and though there is AC throughout the condo, even in August you can sleep in the main room with the windows open. Glorious fresh breezes keep the place comfortable in all but summery noons. Even with one bedroom, the units can easily sleep 4.

There are a few superficial things that need work. I'm not sure how old the condos are, but a bit of sprucing is needed. The utensils are rusty (we wound up using plasticware from take-out food), for instance. The shower drain in one unit was sharp and could easily cut your feet (we have stayed in multiple units). Someone has painted around the wall decorations rather than taking them down to paint the walls. The rooms and beds were always full of sand as there weren't any small rugs to wipe it off on and the housekeeper can't keep up with the constant influx of sand (who could?). Little things, but they bother some travelers.

A good choice in San Pedro.

Room Tip: Unit 6 has a fantastic balcony!

My husband and I stayed here 2 years ago. We loved the central location of the hotel. We could walk everywhere including the airport! There is no onsite pool or restaurant, but who needs it! The ocean is steps away and the downtown San Pedro area is right outside the front door. There were great dining options just down the beach. I liked this place because it was very quiet and relaxing. You are left to your own devices which I enjoy. This island is one of the greatest places I have ever visited. I highly recommend everyone check it out.

Great apartment for rent. Balcony was great. Roof top deck is fabulous. Across from airport, but you don't notice. The unit is beautifully decorated with Mexican pottery. The is a portable DVD player. Flat screen TV. Airconditioning in our unit. Landscaping in courtyard is beautiful. Would stay here again.

We stayed in the one bedroom on the third floor, so the comments below refer to that room. Other rooms may differ.

Location

If you want to be walking distance to all the great restaurants, one of the best beaches on the island (in front of Ramone's), San Pedro town, grocery stores, etc., then Belizean Reef is an optimal choice. It is also about a block from the airport. Some have mentioned the noise from the airport; it honestly never bothered me. I noticed a couple planes a couple times, but it was no big deal. They are little prop planes, not 747s.

Cleanliness

Angela is the keeper and she does a fantastic job. She was there every day to replace towels and clean the condo. One day I ordered a case of beer and soda from the local distributor (see Tips below) and since we were going to be in and out (they deliver - and they don't give you a delivery time), we let Angela know and she kept an eye out. She also offered to put it in the fridge for us. They come in big heavy plastic crates, so it's just not as easy as throwing a 12 pack in the fridge. Just making the point that she did us a big favor. In fact, she put four of the beers in the freezer to cool them faster. In short, Angela is awesome. We left a sizable tip (and some leftover beer, whiskey, and cashew wine).

Air Conditioning

There are A/C units in the bedroom and the living room. They both work well and the only issue we had was turning on the bedroom unit. If the power isn't on, you can remove the front cover and there is a small power button on the top right. This is another thing Angela helped us out with (thanks Angela).

Misc Comments on the Condo

There is a very good sized balcony with a plastic table and three chairs. I kind of wish the balcony wall wasn't solid concrete (it blocks the beach view from certain angles) but no big deal. As with most of the properties on AC, it is built right on the water. We could see a sting ray from our balcony at one point. There are two hammocks in the sandy area on the ground level between the structure and the beach (wish they had them on the balcony because there is room, but they don't). There is an iron gate at the entry, two deadbolts on the door, and a lock box in the room, so security shouldn't be a concern. There are only six units, so it is a nice cozy place with personal attention. There is free wifi (which works reasonably well) and cable TV with movie channels. If you want to book a trip Erik and/or Ana will help you out. Erik was very helpful and answered many questions for us. He called the room a couple of times just to check and see if everything was going ok and see if we needed anything. Last thing- there is space on the roof to hang out. A lot of space. Check it out.

Tips

Beer/Liquor: As mentioned above, you can order cases of beer/soda at wholesale prices from the distributor on the island. It used to be located only a block away from the condo, but now it is a pretty good walk. Ask Angela, or just ask anyone for the Crystal distribution center, and you'll find it. It might be much easier if you can call them. Anyway, you'll save a lot of money and effort because they will deliver the cases to your door (I think I paid about US$26 for a case (24) of Belikin Beer). As for liquor, it might be a good idea to buy bottles of liquor, if you plan on drinking, at the airport's duty free shop. Whatever you do, do not buy it at the main grocery store in town (I forget what it's called, but it's the largest grocery store about a block south of the condo). It's extremely overpriced.

Groceries: As mentioned above, avoid the main grocery store in town. You are better off going to the Save-On grocery store just west of the Tropic Air. The prices are "local" and you can get pretty much everything you need. If you require something they don't have or you need a little more variety, use the main grocery store as a last resort (warning: in my experience and from stories from other people - make sure you pay attention to your tab at the big grocery store and make sure you get correct change). The condos have a kitchen with all the regular hardware.

Overall

It's a great location and a great price (about half the price of the Palms - which is another good choice by the way). If you like a condo with full kitchen and personal service, you'll love this place. If, however, you prefer a resort style with a pool and tiki hut bar, etc., then you might want to look elsewhere.

Room Tip: Rooms on second and first floor only have A/C in the bedroom.

Stayed at Belizean Reef for a week. It is within walking distance from Tropic Air, resturants and shopping. The condo is fully stocked with whatever you need for vacation. Plenty of towels, stocked kitchen, and maid service daily. Angela is a great housekeeper, make sure you tip her well, :) The condo had a king size bed, a separate living area that could be closed off from the bedroom. The living area had a futon couch and two futon chairs that were very comfy to sleep on. It was only two of us, but the condo could easily sleep a family or two couples. The location is safe, we never had any problems . This was our second trip to San Pedro, and would not hesitate to stay at Belizean Reef again.

Stayed here March 5-15 2011. Amazing place. We knew we were going to love it from the first moment we arrived. 1 block from the airport but we didn't know exactly, so took a cab ride. HA very short cab ride, but he did carry all our bags up to the 2nd floor for $7. Oops paid in US and probably was only 7 Belize. It's a great $4 laugh now. 2nd floor is the best in my opion because has a better view but only one flight of stairs. The condo is beautiful and spacious for just the 2 of us. A third would be no problem too. Super comfortable bed (campared to the hard mexican standard). We hardly used the air in the bedroom as the breeze seems to be blowing just right all the time. We are early birds, so didn't mind the airplanes in the morning starting at about 7am. You don't hear them as much if you have the windows closed and air on, but you are pretty close to the airport, so you will hear it. The big benefit is that you are just outside town so you can walk on the beach or on the street and you are right in town in minutes. You can go south to some of the resorts, grocery, beer distributor, wine shop etc in 5 minutes walk. It's 3 lots north from Ramon's with all the tours you could want, and there is Belize down under dive shop right on the beach in front of the condo. Great rooftop view, but we spent the time on the front lawn/sand right at the sea. BCs is a great "local/expat" right prices bar 3 more lots north. Really really great time. The units are all individually owned and we met some of the owners and they were great. We saw both the units on the 2nd floor and the casita on the 2nd floor and they are all great and very well looked after. We are so happy with the place we would always try to stay here first.

This condo is perfect if you want to be close to the city, but want it away enough to be quiet. It was comfortable and clean. The daily maid service was friendly and helpful. We comfortably walked everywhere we wanted to visit, restaurants, bars, grocery stores, and tour boats. The view from the deck was so beautiful. Do not hesitate to rent this unit. You will not be disappointed!!
