We decided to stay at Xanadu in our 4 night stay in San Pedro after doing alot of research. The other resorts we considered are: Ramon's, Captain Morgans, Victoria House & Journey's End. While in San Pedro, we made sure we checked and toured those resorts as well and decided we are very happy with our decision in staying at Xanadu.

The good points: 1) Interesting architecture, they have employed the MONOLITHIC DOME ARCHITECTURE which have been tested to be hurricane/tornado proof. It also enables the rooms to breath in a way that the temperature inside is more than desirable. It also renders it to be considered a GREEN BUILDING for those travelers who are concerned about the environment. 2) The rooms are very clean and well maintained. They have a welcome package of a jug of drinking water, coffee, sugar, etc. Everything you might need in a kitchen is there. 3) The showers work well! 4) The location is of great convenience to everything. 5) Free bikes and kayaks!!! 6) They are good in booking tours for you. 7) The staff in the resort are all very friendly and quite knowledgeable. 8) They have a nice pool and I love the hammocks!

The less than good things to keep in mind: 1) Mosquitoes everywhere (Belize in general is full of mosquitoes!) specially in the resort office. Keep in mind to spray bug spray before coming near that office. The biggest bites I have had happenned while booking a tour in the office. 2) NO restaurant or bar in that resort, hence the full service kitchen in each suite. Although there is a grocery by the resort entrance. And since they are conveniently located near town, you can just try the myriad of restaurants that are good but quite expensive. 3) The beach is not for snorkling nor swimming (this applies to all of Ambergris though).

As long as you come vist Belize for the right reasons... such as: adventure, scuba diving, snorkling off shore and not expect to go there for culture or the beach, then you would absolutely love it! Well, ecept for the mosquitoes. Be DEET ready!

After reading the two reviews dated Aug 9th, I thought I'd drop a quick line to let everyone know we've recently enclosed AND airconditioned our front office so no more mosquitos!! My apologies to those of you who were "eaten alive" while booking your tours. Also a quick thanks to everyone for your support on this medium. We do appreciate hearing that our guests enjoyed their stay with us! Looking forward to seeing our old friends and making some new ones at Xanadu! Susan Glaze, Manager, Xanadu Island resort

We stayed in the 3 bedroom suite. There were 6 of us. We all loved it.
Don't expect ultra lux and you will too.

Rooms were nice and clean. Some of the beds could have been more comfortable but we didn't mind.

The pool was probably one of the best on the island. The beach was mediocre, which means it was comparable to anything else on the island. The sea grass makes all of the beaches on the island not great to swim in. Beautiful to sit by and read and tan, but you won't be swiming in there for hours.

We rented a golf cart and drove 45 minutes to the "best beach" on the island, at Captain Morgans north of the bridge, and it was worse than the beach at Xanadu.

Stay at Xanadu! It's close. Don't stay at the resorts north of the bridge. You are too far out of town and the dirt roads are so bad that you won't be able to go into town regularly. Besides, golf carts cost $100 a day to rent down there! Taxis are the way to go. $5 each way pretty much any distance south of the bridge.

Best thing about Xanadu --- great A/C!!! Satellite TV and Internet access too. Great water pressure for the showers and no one got sick from the water or ice.

Eat at Casa Picasso and the Victoria House. The two best places in town.

Worst thing about Ambergris -- everything is WAY expensive. Expect groceries and meals to cost the same to 2-3 times what you pay for it in the US.

Sandwiches and drinks for 4 were $90 for lunch at the Blue Water Grill. Most of the places were that expensive or worse.

A can of mixed nuts was $8.

Be prepared to watch your spending but still go. It's still casual and beautiful and relaxing.
Growing pretty quick so you better go soon.

I say it's about 2-5 years out from losing its charm.

My husband and I spent part of our honeymoon at Xanadu. It was wonderful. The staff are amazing - friendly and accomodating all the time. The rooms are spacious and reasonably priced. The grounds are gorgeous - the pool is arguably the best on the island. And, we loved the private nature walk in the back - we saw lots of birds, iguanas, geckos, hermit crabs, and many different types of plants of flowers. We also booked all our tours through the resort and they all went very well. We had a great time. We'll definitely be back!

Ambergris Caye is going through a transition. We had been there a year ago and it was completely changed when we came back. There is a lot of constructions and new stores. It has definitely detracted from the beauty of the Island, but give it another year and I'm sure it will be great again.
