Xanadu Island Resort

Reviewed April 21, 2008

We stayed at Xanadu for the first time in February 2007 and had such a great time rebooked for April 2008. Stayed 2 weeks each time and really enjoyed the resort. The people make the difference. Stace, Susan, Martin, Alex and all the staff. Friendly, cooperative, appreciative of our presence and made all the additional bookings and suggestions to make the trip a success. John and I did 13 dives with Ecologic Divers and again the experience was wonderful.

The golf cart and bikes a plus. Couldn't find a bad restaurant on Stace's recommendations.

Facility was in great shape and much attention appears to be placed on its condition.

From the wood-planked deck of the swimming pool to the private pier to the luscious tropical foliage, Xanadu is indeed gorgeous. The ambience is surpassed only by the courtesy, efficiency and friendliness of the staff. I am used to large resort hotels and their amenities (such as restaurants on site) but this trip made me realize how wonderful a smaller resort is. The staff will arrange all activities including zip-lining, snorkelling, sunset cruises and make recommendations for local attractions. Visit Xanadu in San Pedro and you will not be disappointed!

I spent 9 nights at Xanadu (2/29 to 3/9) with my husband and 7 other adults. We all had a great time. We had units #17 and #18. The set up was perfect for us-a full bathroom with each bedroom and full kitchen with each unit. The deck connecting the 2 units was an added bonus. We enjoyed sitting on the deck, up in the trees, morning, afternoon and evening. The staff was very efficient and friendly. They arranged 2 great tours for us. The first was a tour to Xunantunich with cave tubing in the afternoon. Edward Allen was the guide. He was excellent. Xunantunich was inspiring and the cave tubing a lot of fun. The second tour was snorkeling at Hol Chan Marine Park and shark-ray ally. Alphonse was our guide and did an outstanding job. He is great for anyone new to snorkeling. If the weather would have cooperated, I am certain we would have gone out with him again. Our party enjoyed the pool and used the bicycles daily for grocery shopping. We did not need to rent a golf cart. We used the bicycles or walked to the stores and restaurants. We were all happy with our choice of Xanadu for our vacation.

We just returned from a trip to Xanadu and it was just wonderful.

The staff there are so warm and welcoming (as well as efficient) that you really feel at home in the place. We did two tours, a snorkeling trip and a day at the zoo and Mayan ruins. Both of those tours were professionally handled, and we could not have enjoyed ourselves more.

We also enjoyed the island of San Pedro very much this year as the road and restaurant improvements made the experience more easy, and diverse.

I should have written this review a year ago but better late than never, right?

Xanadu is an awesome place to stay if you want a relaxing holiday in Belize. All of the staff was super friendly and helpful which I found refresgingly surprizing.

Booking the trip was easy and we had most of our correspondence by email. Confirmed the room and transfer flights from Belize City directly by email. I can confirm that the resort only charged the price for transfer flights as charged by that air carrier (we check online) everything from the flights to day excursions to rental carts can be charged to your final bill which is extremely helpful.

Staff was also able to recommend great places to eat, day trips that fit our personalities, and a great place in town for massages too!

If you are looking for a all inclusive resort like the Riu resorts this is not it... It is much better. Although it doesn't have the 20 giagantic pools and waterfalls the property is beautiful, the rooms are well decorated and again, the staff is AWESOME!

We will definitely return to Xanadu!

My husband and our 2 girls (6&16) stayed at Xanadu just last week for a 1 week stay and our first trip to Belize. We can't say enough about how wonderful this resort is, other than we can't wait to return.
The service is outstanding, with Stacey,Sue,Martin,Ingrid and all the rest of the staff always welcoming, helpful, professional and smiling. The grounds are private, quiet and hidden from the main road, yet close to San Pedro and the local shops.
The resort epitomizes what Belize is all about...laid back,beautiful,relaxed,warm,friendly,peaceful...
We felt right at home in our suite, especially lounging on the deck listening and watching the spectacular birds, feeling the ocean breeze, hearing the palms sway and enjoying a nice glass of wine.Having a kitchen and being able to buy our own breakfast food, snacks and wine and beer was a real cost saver. Also,we recommend renting a golf cart for the week if you have smaller children...it's invaluable vs. carrying tired children and they are way fun to drive!
Our teenager was able to lie by the pool and chat via wireless internet to her friends at home, and our 6 year old was in heaven with her own hammock and lots of nature to explore.
Stacey arranged our tours with fantastic guides..Ed and Alphonse are the best and most educational and friendly guides and we were able to get a tour booked at last minute with no problem.
We all had just the best time and would recommend this resort to anyone.
It's like coming home to family.

This was our second trip back to Xanadu - Ambergris Caye and the only thing that had changed was that was San Pedro was a little bit busier (it's all relative). Xanadu was the same place we visited a year prior. Same excellent staff, quiet and well kept surroundings, great service and excellent accomodations. If your looking for accomodations and a small complex that is a cut above ...this one is a cut above+++. The main constant is the management trio of Martin, Sue and Stacey. They work long hours and take care of any and all your needs. They really look after the guests. Marina's market is a 2 minute walk away for all your grocery needs and their prices are the best we saw and are not all that bad considering all this has to be flown in or sent in by barge. Restaurants and Bars - George's, Monkey Bites, Crazy Canucks, Blue Water Grill and El Divino are all good choices. The island and all it has to offer has us already talking about our third visit next year.
For those researching this as a vacation spot it has it all - except for big busy resorts. The island is quiet. No jets skis buzzing by all day, street or beach vendors trying to sell you something everywhere you go. There are some people selling stuff but very low key and a "no thanks" is all that is required. The locals and ex-pats are all very friendly. The official language of Belize is English and all the locals speak perfect English - no issues there at all. We highly recommend Ambergris Caye and Xanadu remains our #1 spot to stay! Well done!
