“Fresh coconuts!”
Reviewed March 15, 2014 via mobile

This was our first time in Belize and we relied on previous reviews from Trip Advisor to pick our resort. We were not disappointed! Sapphire is a great place if you are looking for a relaxing and secluded spot. From the minute we got there the staff was very attentive. Everyone was so nice and friendly.

We were picked up by Ben in San Pedro town (it is about a 15-20 minute boat ride to the resort). When we arrived we were given a cell phone and mifi. We really didn't use the cell phone much, only our last day, because we preferred to leave electronics behind & enjoy vacation time. But it is a very nice touch. The mifi came in very handy for us, we used it at night for emails and to research our excursions.

Our room was a condo like unit. Sapphire isn't a large resort, and this is what we were looking for. If you are into large resorts with tons of activities, you may want to keep looking. Quiet & secluded was exactly what we were looking for and we found it here.

The restaurant was very good and every night James would ask us what time we wanted dinner and they made sure we were well taken care of. One morning we went fishing & we brought back a barracuda & gave it to the restaurant & we had two really fresh delicious meals cooked for us with the fish we caught. It was awesome! Breakfast is served daily, and was fresh and very filling (at a great price too).

The beach is nice and we spent a few afternoons just relaxing in the hammocks with some cocktails. The beach is raked every morning & cleaned by the staff. Overall we couldn't have asked for a better vacation, nicer people & staff & a great time.

If you go, make sure you try some fresh coconut & coconut milk which the staff was happy to cut for us!

We will definitely be back. Many thanks to Sam, Luis, Ben, Smokey, Jossie & Rafael for a great time!

We just spent a week at the Sapphire - it was fantastic-relaxing and beautiful! First of all the staff is unbeatable - I have never been treated better and felt so welcome. Luis and Josie went out of their way to set things up for us and make it easy to go play and enjoy our experience. Smokey was funny and enjoyable at the bar and James always had a big smile and something good and positive to say - it felt like we had made some good friends right from the beginning. I have to say that Ben and Raphael, our awesome boat captains were special to me. They were accommodating and helpful and made us feel special and taken care of, such likable guys. We went to town many times on the boat and it was always on schedule - one morning it was at 5:30 am so we could go on an excursion and we were greeted with a smile and happy attitude every time. The house keeping staff did an amazing job - our room was always clean and comfortable . Even the guys that were doing the construction around the resort were friendly and nice. They are still building the resort and it will be really spectacular when it is complete, but in the meantime it is still a great place and is not crowded and loud. I have read many of the negative reviews about this place and I'm scratching my head wondering if we are talking about the same place! Granted, my husband and I are not high maintenance people, but we are not rooky travelers either. We have stayed at many nice resorts through out Mexico and this one rates high on the list of nice rooms and grounds. I will concede that it is a little farther from town than I would have preferred, but we had no problem going and doing things- just takes a bit of planning, and the staff is more than willing to help set things up and make whatever you want to do happen . I did not feel too cut off from civilization and I felt entirely safe. It is a good idea to pick up groceries and snacks (and beer if you don't want to buy it all from the bar to save some money) in town, but if you go prepared and aware of what the place is like, it's great. The restaurant is small but served good food and we enjoyed it- we also cooked in our room as there is a full kitchen. This is not a place full of night life and partying, it is a place that is beautiful and peaceful that has a great beach that you can snorkel from and my husband caught fish from the pier right in front of the hotel. Thank you to all our new friends at the Sapphire for a great time - I will miss your smiles and friendship.

Actually we were very happy in Belize until we reach Sapphire....

The first thing I would say is that it is VERY FAR from San Pedro (the people) , which means a boat trip average of 30 minutes and as indicated on the map of the booking, the same thing appears on google (the hotel have not be able to report as incorrect the web server). The problem is that if you go into town and do not match your activities with the boats of the hotel , you'll pay a trip boat coastall express it takes between 40 minutes to 1 hour depending on all the rest stops people going in boat and also have to pay U.S. $ 20 per person and will not make the trip for one person ( in this case you will have to pay private boat for almost U.S. $ 100) , which is not clearly explained the hotel when you buy this book, as implies an additional cost to passengers .
When we realized this, we had no choice but to stay as we had canceled the reservation before we arrived, and demanded that the hotel our tour operator. However the outputs of the boats are not the most appropriate , leaves at 8:30 , 13:00 and returns from san pedro are at 12:00 and 16:00 or 17:00, but the first day we were the people from the boat and came out 30 minutes before we realized that the change is assumed arbitrarily, the explications was that we must call Luis before 7:300 and tell him that we need boat trip and the call must do with our cell phone (the cell phone that sapphire lend us) , but my cell HAD NO CREDIT TO CALL! then how I can call ? ?
Within this same point, the administrative staff will go out from Sapphire at 17:00 and what happens next if you need anything? You cannot leave the hotel because!!!, but whats happend if you have a medical emergency (during the days that I saw pregnant women, children and grandparents) my question is if you have an emergency what will happen? you should call them at phone so make the boat trip and hopefully you get to San Pedro live? I mention this so knowingly, as I am an allergic person and veterinary (can give you an anaphylactic shock drown in 20 minutes) or a child swallowing something and not have the necessary elements to assist anyone, someone drowning in the pool and die, BECAUSE THERE IS NOT EXIST BASICS FIRST AID NEEDED OR A PERSON WHO KNOWS HOW TO ACT DURING A EMERGENCY, THERE IS NOT An EMERGENCY PROTOCOLS...... I THINK THIS MAKES THIS HOTEL IS VERY UNSAFE FOR PASSENGERS and many of them do not realize they are at risk.
While our stay at Sapphire about at 19:00 the toilet did not drain as it should and the water was about to leave the toilet and we had to wait all night until the morning for someone out to fix the issue, they had pest ants in our room (where is the certificate of sanitization, disinfestation or rodent control should?), also when we bought the book the hotel said that our room (9B) was pool in front of us…… but the pool was a very small and was empty ..... all this involved a credibility problem of the hotel and also our annoyance , however we said that while we could not have problems with dive it was all ok, however when we ask Jossie and Luis how we should get dives , they told us that if we hired a " friends of the Sea" the hotel WILL put the boat trip back and forth, so we booked 3 days of diving with this company and when we told Luis that we should carry at 8:00 and return at 12 :30 -13: 00 hours FOR 3 days, Louis and Jossie told us that the boat was leaving at 12:00 and that they couldn´t wait for us!!!!! A total different situation was indicated for Luis and Jossie on the previous day, at this point we tell them that we decided to go to another hotel and they have the worse answer for us because the hotel was paid and ITS NO MATTER FROM THE HOTEL.... finally we ask to Luis do a reservation for us to dinner in the restaurant “the secret” (that restaurant put the trip boat) for 19:00 , but we wait on the dock for the boat from 18:40 to 19:25 and nothing arrive, so we called, Samuel the manager, and he contacted the restaurant and the problem was that Luis never requested booking .......

That was how we left the hotel and were desperate for a hotel in the village and we did, so we moved and it was by far the best option as we could know the best restaurants like Elvis and discover the village at night, a situation that is impossible to see in Sapphire, because at 17:00 will give back to the hotel ! Being stuck in Sapphire....
San Pedro should meet at day and night time, we were not looking to be coming out and partying all day, but neither wanted to be as far away as we stay Sapphire, actually the location and treatment of the administrative staff ( Luis and Jossie ) was very bad, they are not friendly with us and they was dismissive with our disagreement . In this situation we decided to act and went to make a complaint to the Ministry of Tourism and Culture of Belize showing all these situations, because a hotel is no exist a administrative staff during 14 hours, without emergency protocols without orientation customer service is a hotel that becomes DANGEROUS for passengers creating unnecessary risks for those who just want to enjoy and have fun in this beautiful country. THE IDEA OF THE COMPLAINT IS TO BE TAKEN INTO ACCOUNT ALL THE GAPS, RISK THERE TO PASSENGERS AND THEIR OWN WORKERS, THE MANAGER must stay in this PLACE (LUIS IS NOT THE MANAGER) AND CLEARLY SAY WHERE AS IF THEY ARE MADE SCAMMING PEOPLE, a situation that happened to us as we had not had additional costs considered and luckily were able to do to enjoy San Pedro.
My recommendation is to find a hotel IN SAN PEDRO , there are many options and if you do want to stay in hotel that has insulation, find one that is not so far away and find a hotel with years of experience.
Sorry for my english i speak spanish.

I will attempt to address your complaints on a point by point basis:

*Yes indeed we are very far from San Pedro,s town core and our website clearly states that as it is a vital piece of information. To base ones travel decision on Google maps leaves a lot to be able to go wrong to say the least. Any one with a google account can edit locations and we have edited ours to reflect the accurate location on a number of occasions but to no avail.

*We do offer a daily boat shuttle to and from town and this is completely complimentary ( we are the only hotel in this area that offer this service free of cost). There is a water taxi that offer a service for a fee of US$20 one way as fuel is not cheap in Belize at all. We therefore encourage our guests to let us know of any plans that involve leaving the hotel so as to try to work around their schedules, now imagine this with 25 guests. We have been fortunate to have very understanding guests and to have to wait in town a few minutes for someone on another tour has resulted in few complaints. Now to demand that our boat work entirely around just one tour is frankly very unfair and we just were not able to accommodate this request.

* We do provide a complimentary prepaid phone that is loaded with US$5 in minutes(again something not offered by the other hotels in this area) and we offer extra minutes at a fee if this is used up. This is equivalent to about 30 minutes in local calls if one does not choose to call internationally.
* You came early to get the boat one day and it had already left, as I mentioned we beg to be notified on your activities so as to be able to coordinate the boat schedules. Even so we made the decision to offer you a private boat at no cost to you. This little detail, was not mentioned, of course.
* Some of the staff indeed live in town and have to leave at some point, but there is no way that Sapphire Beach Resort can be abandoned totally. Samuel Gomez, the Managing Director, lives on property and is more than happy to help in any situation, case in point, when you called him about the missed reservation via the phone with no credit.

*Samuel is a certified CPR first responder as are our captains and Security Guard.
Carlos Gonzalez mans the front desk at night until 8:30 and is also our head of security. Rafael Roches lives on property and is one of our licensed boat captains. We maintain our boat fueled and ready at all times and we are prepared for any emergencies as any responsible hotel should. It seems a bit disingenuous to state that Sapphire Beach is a hazard and is unsafe to guests. Belize, although a 3rd world country is cognizant of the fact that we are very dependent on tourism and therefore all stakeholders in the industry have to adhere to strict rules and regulations. This was manifested in the fact that the report made to the tourism governing body was promptly investigated and Sapphire has since been cleared of all accusations. We have always had all of our licenses and follow all the guidelines set forth by the Belize Tourism Board.
* Finally, one is not "stuck" at Sapphire, there is always the water taxi company that works way into the night for a fee.
I take this opportunity to apologize for all the inconvenience and for our location as this seemed to be a huge factor. I apologize for not being able to provide a boat free of cost and lastly I apologize sincerely for any perceived attitude that we seemed to have had as the administrators. This is the first time that such a complaint has been lodged of this sort and we had to conduct a postmortem on what exactly occurred. It is unfortunate that one cannot please everyone. Our aim is to go over and beyond and just one complaint, be it unfounded or not certainly affects the entire staff as we honestly aim to please.

Finally, we are very much aware of the power of this medium and we take it very seriously. Unfortunately, this is one of those times that our honest rebuttal might come off as maybe arguing, and to those that read this response, I assure you, give our staff at Sapphire a chance and we will not disappoint. This is proven by all the positive comments we receive on a daily basis on this forum as well as social media.

Warm Regards,
Luis

Sapphire Beach was a wonderful experience. The staff went out of their way to accommodate us and make our stay really enjoyable. The location is remote so be aware that it is reached only by boat but we really enjoyed the peace and quiet. Special thanks to Louis & Jossie for the warm reception and help with setting up tours and adventures. James was awesome - he is such a great representative for the property - head bartender but he did so much more. Smokey was so much fun as the tiki bartender. Boat captains Ben and Rafael were great and they got us safely back and forth from town. Rafael waited extra late to pick us up after our adventure tour was delayed by almost an hour! Housekeeping staff is excellent. All the staff members were friendly, well trained and professional.
The property is still under construction as it's expanding, so expect to see the construction guys working around the property but they'll greet you cheerfully and it's interesting to see how they get things done.
The restaurant on site is good, menu is a bit limited and pricey but keep in mind that everything is brought to the resort by boat. Nothing nearby so pick up snacks when in town. No night life here so plan to make special shuttle arrangements to get back from San Pedro if planning to be out late.
Guests are provided with a prepaid cell phone to contact the office and boat captains (awesome idea!)and a MIFI unit for internet access. Otherwise, the pools are clean, the beach is raked every day, and attention to detail is evident throughout.
The resort is not complete and if glitz and nightlife is what you're looking for, stay in town. If you want quiet, relaxation, and superb service then go see our friends at Sapphire.

Reviewed February 10, 2014

This is a hard review to write, because I think that Sapphire Beach Resort has some potential, and it MAY be a great place to stay...in a couple of years. However, it's simply not a place I could recommend at this time at all.

Here are the major problems:
1) It's just not done yet... the place is literally under construction as they work on "phase II and phase III". So get ready for banging hammers, drilling and sawing all day long. The banging and drilling are minor issues, but I list this first becuase it's likely the biggest reason for #2)...

2) There aren't any people there! Again, probably because it's simply not finished yet, they just don't have any guests yet. The place was like a ghost town when we were there (Mid- January, 2014). We got there and there was maybe one or two other couples in the entire place. This never really changed - a few people arrived and a few people left while we were there (4 nights) but NEVER more than a couple of rooms full at the resort at one time.

3) The staff is overworked because they are understaffed. There seemed like maybe 5 or 6 people who actually interacted with the guests. My understanding is that these people work 7 days per week and 12 hours per day. I actually liked the people that work there and they were all very accommodating and helpful - but after awhile they just needed to go home (more on this in a moment)

3) You are STUCK at this resort... One thing that is not really advertised is that this place is FAR from San Pedro - it's a full 25 minute by high speed boat. There is NO ROAD to get to and from the resort. Walking/Bike riding are impossible. Golf Carts are impossible after any periods of rain.

Now, on the positive side, the Resort DOES offer to take you to town and back on a free shuttle, which is appreciated - however, know that you are on THEIR schedule. The shuttle leaves at 8:30 am and around 12:30 PM and around 5:30 PM. That's it.

If you want to go to town at any other time, you have only one other option: a water taxi that costs US $40 per person round trip. To me, this is CRAZY expensive - US $80 for the wife and I to go back and forth from our hotel?!? That's before dinner and drinks!

So... you're stuck here for a vast majority of your time on this island. Which might be OK if you were staying at a true resort - except there's NOTHING HERE! The "restaurant" isn't even really a restaurant - it's a kitchen that opens from time to time. In fact, on our last night here, after a long day of fishing and snorkeling, we arrived back at the resort at about 5 PM. One of the staff casually asked my wife, "are you guys having dinner now?", to which she responded no (what my wife meant was, "no, not at the moment" because it was only 5 PM - and we were told constantly that the "last call" for dinner is 8:30 PM nightly).

Well, 30 minutes later, we see the ENTIRE STAFF getting on the 5:30 PM shuttle boat to leave for the night and go home... EVERYONE! Nobody left in the office, nobody left in the kitchen - The entire place was entirely deserted by the staff.

Getting back to my earlier point about the place being understaffed and the staff being overworked - I don't blame them for trying to leave early one night and be with their families or relax a bit. But... they just left! At least my wife was asked if we wanted to eat at 5pm... they didn't even give that courtesy to the rest of the (few) vacationers at the resort! The other people there were given NO NOTIFICATION OR INDICATION that there would be NOTHING to eat!!! And again, we were trapped here with no way off the resort - so on our last night in Belize, we at cheese and crackers that two of our fellow stranded vacationers graciously offered to us.

A month later - and I'm still shocked as to how this all went down.

There were a few Positives that I should mention:
The Room - We were given a huge, beautiful, two bedroom/ two bath vacation condo with full kitchen. It had just about everything we would need.

Cell phone and "MiFi" - In order to communicate with the office and any other local business, you are given a local cell phone as part of your stay. We were also given a "MiFI" -a personal wifi device that you keep in your pocket that generates a wifi signal within about a 10-15 foot radius so you always have an internet connection for your smart phone or other device. This was a nice touch.

Shuttle: Even though I didn't like being trapped to their schedule of only 3 shuttles per day, I will reiterate that it is nice that they offer a shuttle at all... other resorts that were almost as far away as Sapphire Beach and still required Water Taxi's didn't provide ANY shuttle whatsoever (so their guests were FORCED to take the expensive water taxi.)

Once we got on the same page as the shuttle schedule, we were able to get back and forth for free which was nice... however... I still think you need to offer evening shuttles. Currently, the last shuttle back from town is at 5 PM, so if you EVER want to do dinner, you're paying to get back. I think if you're going to offer a shuttle, you need to allow your guests the option of at least one or two late night shuttles.

Staff: Josie, James, Smokey, and the rest of the staff there were all really nice and did try hard to make the experience as pleasant as possible, given all the limitations.

On behalf of Sapphire Beach Resort we thank you for taking the time out to submit a review. This is certainly a medium that we take very seriously. I shall address your comments point by point:

(1) Indeed we are under construction on Phase 2 and 3 and this is unavoidable at this point. We find ourselves addressing these challenges way more often than we would like but it is an unfortunate part of progress. Of course this is no excuse and we readily admit that it will probably not be the high point of any one's vacation. Bearing this in mind, the owners have collectively agreed to offer our units considerably lower than current market value as an incentive to having you choose our resort for your vacation. In addition, we offer complimentary boat transfers to and from San Pedro town at least twice a day. This is at no small cost to us but we have decided to incur this overhead unlike all other neighboring establishments that have consistently charged on average, $US20.00 per person each way.
We welcome any suggestions that you, our valued guests may have in this regard and although it is a constant juggling between expenditures and keeping our guests happy, we are willing to consider all suggestions.

(2) You are right we certainly were not at capacity on those dates that you specified. Fortunately this is not because we are not ready but rather that we are careful about the amount of guests we accept at any given time. As I stated above, we are fully aware of our construction issues and the last thing we would like would be to be scrambling to address a large amount of of guest concerns in one day. Instead we maintain a staff to guest ratio of at least 3-1 and we strive to please as much as possible. A look at the positive in this situation is to be able to say that we do get most of our guest who are delighted in the fact that we offer a secluded setting.
On January 14th we had approximately 7 rooms occupied. Our units are fully equipped with cooking equipment and at times our guests choose not to enjoy most of our other amenities

(3) As mentioned above we maintain a staff ratio of 3-1and although one might see just a few of these staff, I can assure you we do need quite a few more to maintain an establishment of this size.
We follow the Belize labour laws stringently as any responsible employer should. Our staff work for 45 hours per week, and absolutely need to take one day off per week. Admittedly as a start up resort, we all do a lot more hours as is explained to the staff initially, this is in addition to the fact that the service industry has always been known to be the most grueling of any industry. Be that as it may, we closely monitor employees hours and have back up temps as is needed. we are grateful to our employees as there loyalty and dedication have always been what makes Sapphire Beach Resort what it is, a friendly, service oriented establishment.

In closing I am readily admitting that we do have very many areas that we fall short. I came on board on mid-January 2014 and I am glad to report that we have made significant positive changes.
Some of these are:
We have revamped the restaurant, changing the decor as well as setting specific opening times- 8 am - 11am for breakfast, 11am - 2pm for lunch, and 4pm -8:30 pm for dinner daily.
We have hired an executive chef and can now boast world class menu items featuring Caribbean & Latin American cuisine. We now have quite a few outside guests that do come in to dine with us on a daily basis.
Our daily complimentary boats have a set time now and as you rightly said, we are the only hotel that offers this service.
We are in the process of putting together an activities booklet that will now see us offering volley ball, bocci ball, movie nights, BBQ nights on the beach, board games, bonfire nights, happy hour at our Tiki Bar, etc.
This is on top of all the daily activities we already offer.
I take this opportunity to thank you for staying with us and we sincerely hope to have you as a guest in the future. Your review has proven to be quite helpful. I apologize for any inconvenience caused and I assure you we have addressed most if not all of these issues.

Just wanted to post picture. Big thank you to Sam the owner ,louis smokey, rasta and all the other from maid to the help to the food service. What a difference from Pedros inn. The boat ride to town is schedule 4 times a day but they accomodated when we needed a boat a certain times for activites or coming back from town later at night. We were provided access to the owner jet ski. Yes I know pretty cool and snorkling gears and kayak. We tried catching lobsters but let's say we would of like to have rasta with us.lol Btw people call him dread but I like rasta better. This is our first time in Belize. I would come back here as its only getting better

We went from probably Belizes worst hotel to a breath of fresh air. After getting called pricks and kicked out of a Pedro's hotel by a hot head owner Peter because he was mad at our friend for losing his money and thinking it was stolen, Sapphire beach stepped in and went above and beyond. When we got kicked out it was past 6 and Sapphires check out time ends at 6. They found a room for us last minute sent a complimentary boat to pick us up even though the last one had just come back. We were greeted at the dock by the owner Sam and the room was amazing. A beach facing 2 bedroom with a large patio. We were given out own cellphone so we could call the office or the manager whenever we needed something as well as make local calls to wherever we needed. We got our own mifi so that we can have wifi wherever we are including taking it to town. Complimentary boat service gets you to and from the main drag twice daily. Free kayaks and two pools and hammocks are available for your use. The only downside if you think it's a downside is that its far from the main drag. If you like peace and isolation this is a good thing. You should think about bringing in your own food groceries as you're limited to the one restaurant at the hotel. Luis is extremely helpful and informative and Smokey the bartender and Rasta will help make you feel like a treasured guest. If you want a quiet relaxing spot that's well maintained and where the staff cater to your every need this is the place.
