“Very peaceful but difficult if you want to go to town”
Reviewed July 2, 2014

My wife and I celebrated our 40th Anniversary at Portofino and we were very happy with the extra service and personal touches the staff provided for us. The grounds are kept very clean and every evening the staff sprayed the area for insect abatement. The Tree Top room was very comfortable and clean. The in room soaps are awesome!

Thank you for sharing your experience with our resort. We consider ourselves privileged to be a part of your special occasion. We are also very happy you enjoyed your stay.

While we understand that the distance from town offers some unique situations when it comes to travelling back and forth, we aim to separate ourselves from the town which we feel makes the resort very unique.

We stayed a full week at the Portofino and was very satisfied with the experience. Our beachfront bungalow was very spacious and clean - actually they were cleaning the room twice a day every day! Staff was very friendly and eager to help. They also went the extra mile when we had to visit the doctor two hours before our flight departure and after we've checked out! Not only they scheduled the appointment but also paid for our taxi transportation to the doc and the airport to make sure we catch our flight! That's what I call great customer service!

Although Portofino it is 6 miles away from the city, we found this to be better as it is much more quiet and personal. You can easily spend the whole day at the resort reading a book or hanging at the pool or beach without people passing by all the time. As with everything else in Ambergris Caye you cannot really swim at the sea (shallow, stale water due to the reef) unless you do a daily excursion by boat or go diving by the reef.

Resort's boat runs back and forth the city usually twice a day but you can always catch the water taxi for $11 USD a person each way, or walk or bike on the coast line if you don't mind 6 miles (we did that a few times and it was fun!).

This is the place where I proposed to my girl (she said yes!!!) so it will always have a special place in my heart! The staff helped me with the logistics and worked with me from before we arrived to ensure everything goes smoothly.

Overall - good value for money, very personal, great hospitality (staff makes you feel like home) and would recommend it without a doubt if you already decided to visit the island.

Room Tip: Go for a beachfront cabana.

We had the best time at Portofino! Wonderful staff, beautiful little tiki hut, great pool, manicured beach. We said when we left that we would be back! Go to Palopa Bar for a fun afternoon outing. We enjoyed drinks a few doors down at rojos and did some amazing snorkeling.

Room Tip: Baracouda was our room- we had our own private tiki hut!

Having never been to Belize, I wondered if 12 days would be too long to spend with our three kids (18,17, and 14). It turned out to not be long enough! After a difficult plane ride, filled with missed connections, having Moe meet us at the dock for the boat ride to the resort was great. It takes about 15 - 20 minutes to arrive at the resort. You have the opportunity to see other resorts and homes along the way. We were met at the dock with a cold eucalyptus scented towel and a refreshing fruit drink. We stayed in the lower mansion. It had 2 bedrooms, kitchenette, dinning room and they put another twin bed in the large living room for our son. Once in the room, the staff comes with a variety of homemade soaps for you to choose. New soap arrives like magic everyday. The staff is amazing. They go out of their way to make you feel like part of their family. They knew all of us by name, greeting us as we would come and go, knowing our likes, even anticipating them before we were aware of them. The five of us became PADI certified during our stay. Thanks to Roberto and Blinky for making the certification process fun and educational. We also went on an excursion to zipline and cave tubing. It was a long day but well worth it. The resort boat goes into the town of San Pedro several times daily at no charge. There are many restaurants and bars in town as well as shopping. We went into town a few times, but much more preferred staying at the hotel. The food is great, waiters are amazing (hi Tritian!). It is a very easy walk to several resorts if you want to try them for lunch or dinner. It is also possible to arrange for boat transportation from the restaurants. We were looking for relaxation and family time on this trip and Portofino did not disappoint. Our room had a hammock, swing and several chairs on the balcony. We all spent many hours reading, snap chatting (kids!), and napping in the shaded, breezy area. We had amazing massages on the beach. Our last night, Micheala arranged a lovely intimate dinner on the beach for our family. We did not want to leave and will be back very soon. Thanks Portofino for a terrific vacation!

Room Tip: All rooms have a pool/beach view. The rooms face east so there is a beautiful sunrise but no sunset...

Plus: The grounds are kept immaculate and all appears as in the photos on the website. Very picturesque. Comfy, padded lounge chairs. Some of the staff members were very friendly and accommodating.
Minus: The restaurant was very good but on the high end. Public water taxi round trip was $22/pp so we opted not to go into town for dinner, as it was a 20 minute ride each way. Free water taxi was provided by the resort but only from 4:30-6:30 but we didn't return from our excursions until 4ish so we could never shower and be on the dock by 4:30. We were told as well, that the 10% Service Charge was NOT gratuity for the waiters, so we tipped on top of that, plus there is also a 13% sales tax added to everything. Much more pricey than expected.
The room (lower mansion) was sub-par. Kitchen poorly stocked and unit was worn and dated. No windows opened, so you couldn't enjoy the ocean breeze, but instead had to depend on the AC which was very hard to regulate. No lamps or soft lighting; just chandelier or overhead lighting with some bulbs burned out. You couldn't walk very far along the beach so evening strolls were very limited and we felt too confined. The water is not good for swimming. Shallow and grassy, but to be expected with the barrier reef so close. Try the Placencia peninsula on the southern end of the country. Well worth the extra traveling. It has everything you need/want and great beaches, restaurants and bars and felt very safe. Portofino's is a bit too secluded, but if that's what you're after and don't mind spending big bucks, then it may suit you. Next time, we will head straight to Placencia and skip Ambergris altogether. Try the Seaspray hotel.

Room Tip: lower mansion can sleep 5 but only has one bathroom. don't plan to cook.

I arrived at Portofino's this past week and I was not overly impressed with the resort. For the price you pay I expected more. The restaurant was very good but pricey. The service staff was friendly. Being six miles from San Pedro and having to transport by boat was an inconvenience.

Room Tip: I would recommend traveling to Placencia if your looking for nice beaches and affordable prices.

Thank you for sharing your experience with our resort. We do know that the distance can be an issue and why we actively advertise its accessibility and distance. For many, being away from the Town is a much needed experience however it may not be the best fit for all. We do promote ourselves to be a place laid back and romantically rustic.
We are saddened you were not happy with the meals at the restaurant, as it is one of the better rated restaurants on the island. It is pricier because of transportation form town to the resort. again being secluded has some limitations.
We do hope you enjoyed your time in Belize.

Returning to Portofino after five years was a dream come true. We spent three nights of our honeymoon at the hotel lazing on the beach, reef fishing and doing the shark ray snorkle. Now we were returning on a three hotel trip to the island and we kept Portofino as our highlight. We did our 5 year anniversary vow renewals and everything and i mean everything was simply perfect. We communicated with Michaela (the Manager) ahead of our arrival and she simply assured us that everything would be taken care of, and it was! The wedding pagoda on the beach made from bamboo and whispy white curtains was adorned with eye pooping pink and white flowers, she arranged for a pastor to come from the capital Belmopan, arranged for the cake and every last detail. They surprised us with a palm frond walk down to the wedding spot for my wife to walk down and even the owners Jan and Sandra were sweet enough to remember us and to agree to be our witnesses. One of the staff agreed to take our photos and took great ones of the ceremony and then Sandra took the camera later and obviously has a complete talent. She was taking hidden shots which turned out to be amazing and for these and every last detail we will be eternally grateful. The entire staff from the welcome on the pier, the meals in the restaurant, the grace and accuracy of every last detail for the vow renewal to the million electric tealights and flower petals on our bed, nothing could be faulted. We were served dinner on the beach afterwards in the same wedding chapel with twinkling lights and it felt like we were in some movie set, everything looked so perfect and the food was off the charts. If you are in love, planning a wedding, doing a vow renewal or simply want the best you can get for your money, head down to Portofino. We certainly will not be waiting 5 more years for another visit, Michaela and team just ROCK, thanks to them we will have a day we will simply never forget. Gracias, thank you, amazing!

Room Tip: we booked very late and had a beach cabana which was their last room and which was perfect, had we b...
