“Nice but noisy!”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 15, 2009

My husband and I stayed at Ramon's Village for 5 nights in January. We chose this hotel because of the reviews we read on Trip Advisor. We stayed in a gardenview cabina which was
situated in a pretty garden setting BUT.....
Why didn't more travellers mention the endless noise!!!! Ramon's is situated directly across the road from the San Pedro airport and all the gardenview cabins are very close to the main
road in San Pedro. This resulted in traffic noise from both, all day and much of the night. We found it very difficult to get any sleep!
We found the hotel to be way over-priced. The restaurant was expensive with mediocre food. The drinks were very expensive. The beach was okay, but the swimming area was a small area cleared of seagrass adjacent to their pier and wasn't at all appealing. The pool was a joke! Don't go by the online photos of the pool which make it look 10 times bigger than it actually is. It is more of a water feature than a pool. No one entered the pool in the 5 days we were there. It looked dirty and was very cold. How disappointing!
The only thing Ramon's has in its favour is its proximity to the downtown of San Pedro where there are lots of shops and restaurants. You can get anywhere by walking for 10 or 15 minutes.
I hate to be so critical of a hotel but Ramon's just doesn't cut it.
My husband and I are seasoned travellers with 30 years travel
experience under our belts so we've seen it all. You just don't
get what you pay for here.

We just returned from a 5 night stay at Ramon's and loved it! We had a garden room hut kind of near the back. I had read reviews in books that complained of the road noise in these rooms and can understand. We did hear some noise, but nothing that bothered us really. I rarely find a room with complete silence. We chose that room because we really wanted to stay in a room with a palapa roof. After walking the almost the whole island, I can say we were really glad to of chosen Ramon's. The beach is by far the best! There was some locals who were selling stuff, but I found that to be at other places as well. It would be nice if there was none of that, but the locals need to make a living as well I guess. Everyone was very friendly when we said no thanks and the kids selling were pretty cute and would like to joke around with us. The staff were very nice and accomadating . The guy at the dive shop was pretty gruff, but we got used to it. We only ate breakfast there which was good. The purple parrot drink was very delicious! I would recommend this place for sure!

The resort was very friendly. The staff is pleasant. Your rooms are kept clean. The rooms are average, except if you get the international suite then it is superb. The menu has daily specials and some are excellant and some dishes are average. If you are not a seafood type person, there are only a few dishes available and that goes the same for town. The bar needs to have happy hour & entertainment. The prices tend to be pricey.
Great bar & restaurant service on the beach. No need to get off your lounge chair. Dive operation is wonderful. Thanks to Adolfo & Palma. Diving was very good. The day trips to the mainland were great.
The only complaint is that you were bothered all the time by the locals on RESORT property. You were bothered ( either begging for food or trying to sell you jewelry ,massages or carvings) on the beach, at your rooms & even when your are dining. If you had a table near the walkway to the beach, they came up to you. They wake you up if you are sleeping on the beach. It didn't matter what time it was. And it was CONSTANT, all day & all night. No resting here . We were there for 2 weeks and there was not 1 day we were left alone. We told the manager about our harrassments & concerns on this issue. They are suppose to look in to more security.
Would recommend this place, but not now. Wait for the security changes.

We enjoyed our trip. The entire place is well run during the day.

The rooms were decent though they could use a little updating.

The dive operation was EXCELLENT in our opinion. The entire crew runs a very safe dive operation. They do not take chances with safety. We highly recommend the resort course they offer. We had a couple of non-divers with us who took the course. They were diving like old pros in no time. The dive leaders were insistent on staying with the limits of the resort certification. They were polite but would not budge on this. You can be sure they will run a safe dive for you.

It is close to everything in town. The airport is across the street and down about a block.

The food in the restaurant is decent - and good in some cases. The service is excellent.

Go ahead and rent the golf carts. Also, the custom on the island is to give people a ride when they are hitch-hiking. We noticed this and started participating. It became a whole new experience. We got to know some of the locals and learned a few things.

The only concern I had was that the security guards at night did not know how to reach the doctor on call. One of our people (my son) became dehydrated from drinking too little water or gatorade (his fault) and consequently developed decompression illness (a.k.a. the bends). Once we finally located the doctor, everything was great. The problem was the security guard on duty at night had no way to contact the hotel manager or the police. His personal cell phone was "out of minutes" and the office with local phones to contact the police, the manager, or someone for assistance was locked - and he had no key.

I will say the doctor (Dr. Rodriguez) who helped us was superb. He turned out to be one of the world's experts on decompression illness. He provided phenomenal and dedicated service. I cannot say enough good things about him. He was simply better than words can describe. He even took the time to talk with me about what he had seen and learned of diving related illnesses in his career. As a dive master and assistant instructor, it was very useful to me. I will add this to the conversations in dive classes so that my dive buddies and students learn from it.

My husband and I just returned from Ramon's Village last night and spent a week in a beachfront room. We booked the week for celebration of our 20th wedding anniversary and it was everything we expected it to be and more. I had read some of the reviews posted on Trip Advisor about Ramon's that had posted in the last 6 months and frankly I was a little concerned about some of the negative comments. When we arrived we were shown to a lovely beachfront room that was very neat and clean and had an air conditioner that worked perfectly and did not make any noise as one review had indicated. The staff was awesome and Ramon himself, the owner, came over and spoke with us two mornings during breakfast to make sure we were enjoying ourselves. The staff was wonderful and tended to our every need. We were there during the slow season and that may have had something to do with us being a little more pampered. The resort was only half full last week.

We went diving two days with the crew from Ramon's and they were excellent. If Ramon's rates were higher than some of the other dive shops, it wasn't by much. It was entirely worth it to walk out our door and go 15 feet to the dive shop and take our gear out of a locker and get on the boat. It was worth a few more bucks for that convenience.

We found some great restaurants. A number of places were closed because it was the slow season, like Elvi's Kitchen and El Patio. Our very favorite place was The Sunset Grill-it is off the beaten path, literally, very close to a construction sight. The food is excellent. Go and see the school of tarpons they feed. We loved the Blue Water Grill, Caramba's and we had dinner at Ramon's once and it was very good. The dinners all averaged about $60 US for two. We did not think any of the food was outrageously priced. Remember San Pedro is an island and all of the food and supplies are brought in by barge from the mainland.

We also found the Sol Spa in the purple building and had a couples massage and that was very nice. There is a great little cafe downstairs called the Hummingbird Cafe where you can get a latte or some yummy chocolate chip cookies.

The last day we were there we took the Lamanai River Trip with SEAduced. It was quite an experience. Neither one of us had ever done anything quite like it before and if you want to really see the country of Belize then make sure and do it. The ruins at Lamanai were very interesting but the coolest thing of all were the howler monkeys. They were really howling the day we were there and it was something I'll never forget. The weather was less than perfect the day we went but when it was all said and done we are both glad we took the trip to Lamanai.

In closing, I will just say that just make sure you know what Ramon's is about before you go. The accomodations are not fancy. There is no TV in the room. There is a telephone and a coffee pot. This is a diving destination. If you don't dive or fish, there is probably not too much for you to do. We had been to Roatan and Bonaire before, so we knew about these rustic, laid back places. It was a wonderful experience and I would love to take my children back one day when they are older and can become certified to dive.

  • Disliked — No TV in room but I did read a good book

The hotel was in a great location, just outside of all the bustle, and right on the beach. We loved the layout, but thought that they definitely skimped on the luxury of the rooms. For the price we payed we found nicer rooms by the end of the trip. The food was fantastic and the staff was great.
Our only complaints were the prices of activities were well above the competition, and the head of the dive shop was of little assistance and had an overall bad attitude. I would research other accommodations a little but overall this place was nice. If you do book here call the hotel directly and not the booking office in Mississippi as you will definitely get a better quote.

We booked this hotel based on many reviews read, some good some bad. This place is great. You can't go there expecting the Hilton, its Belize! You will have sand on the floor, it is humid and there are bugs and lizards! Our honeymoon cabana was ON the beach about 15 feet from the water. It was slightly secluded from the rest of the rooms, on the edge of the resort, perfect privacy. It was very pretty, very well kept, very clean. All of the staff was great.
We talked to them about restaurants, they booked all of our reservations for us. Their restaurant was very good but it was on the pricey side but so are the other nice restaurants on the island.
The pool area is pretty small, I wouldn't say it is great for children but why spend time in the pool with a beautiful blue ocean steps away!
Our AC always worked very well. The roof never leaked even through a pretty tough down pour.
It was the perfect honeymoon place!
