Great location:
Just outside of the main, busy and loudest area of San Pedro. It was a great location easy to walk to food and bars but not too loud.

The staff:
I cannot remember one staff member that was not happy, smiling, helpful or accommodating. It can be difficult to find a staff member at the bar or office at times as they seem to work between the two places.

The room:
A great oasis after our last few room experiences. We stayed in room number one. It overlooked the gorgeous pool, the bar and the beach. Nothing like an ocean view! The room was clean, bed comfortable and had a neat vaulted ceiling. The linens were adequate. The room also has a small fridge and microwave but no dishes or cutlery but the staff could provide me with utensils when I asked. The bathroom was clean and and plenty of warm water at all hours. The only strange thing is the shower was kind of designed for a midget.

The food:
I only tried the free breakfast. The fruit was delicious and juice good. The pastries or bread were ok. One day there were a bunch of bees swarming the pastries but otherwise no complaints. The dirty banana drink was delicious at the bar.

The resort:
The pool was cleaned every morning and was refreshing. The beach and sand were raked everyday. And all outside patio areas and stairs to rooms were cleaned everyday several times. They even painted while we were there.

Overall I would happily stay again. And they even paid for the cab to the resort and back from the water taxi. A great hotel.

We echo the review from the recent San Jose reviewer who we had the pleasure to meet on our trip. The hotel was just a nice size, right on the beach, and from our ground floor junior suite , we would both wake up and go to sleep with glorious views to sea. Tremendous staff who all couldn't have been more helpful. Highly recommended!

We spent a week this past December/January at Mata Rocks. It was a fantastic, clean, well cared for and friendly resort. It is not the biggest on the island, but it by far the friendliest. The room was always clean and we had an amazing view of the water. When we first arrived, our luggage was taken to our room and after we were given time to settle, we were welcomed with complimentary rum punch. The staff were very helpful in arranging tours, giving advice on places to see, to eat, etc. The owners were there while we were there and they were also extremely friendly and willing to offer advice on what to see and do as well. We love Chrisinda, the lady who works at the bar. She made us feel so very welcome! We would not hesitate to stay here again!

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view of the water - so beautiful

We're fairly picky about our surroundings and we love Mata Rocks Resort - 17 rooms - most with an ocean view or ocean facing. Perfect size and location. The second-floor ocean view junior suite we had for 2 weeks was large with a comfortable king bed, huge shower, reliable cable and WiFi, and a small kitchen (stove and microwave oven and refrigerator.) This hotel and its beach are spotless, has an excellent staff that anticipates your needs and is very friendly and helpful. They'll arrange all your snorkeling and diving tours at no charge to you. Hammocks and comfortable padded lounge chairs at the shore dotted with coconut palm trees; complimentary bicycles; a Continental breakfast of great Belize coffee, bread and local fruit (outstanding pineapple); a fun "Squirrel's Nest" bar for beverages and hot dogs that closes at 9:30 pm; a small pool for cooling off or trying out your snorkeling gear makes Mata Rocks Resort THE place to stay. Not to mention reasonable prices. Also being a mile south of town, which is a jumble of claptrap buildings, hotels, and noisy, gas-powered golf carts., is a blessing. After checking out dozens of Ambergris hotels, the elegant-looking Mata Rocks Resort turned out to be a great choice. Absolutely no complaints.

Room Tip: Ask for a ocean front or ocean view junior suite on the second floor for best view.

We recently stayed at Mata Rocks on the recommendation of a friend. The place is relatively small compared to some others, but it was just perfect for us. It consists of an office building, the rooms, a small pool and a beach w/ bar. This isn't a place you would go if you are hoity toity. If you like being waited on hand and foot, you won't enjoy yourself. The staff however is very friendly and always busy keeping the sand from the beach from getting in the rooms. They always greet you and are open to a conversation. They will always help you set up excursions or recommend places to eat.

We had a junior suite for 4 of us; mom, dad, grampa and the kid. It didn't seem like it was going to work, but with a cot added we made it work just fine. Mom and dad had the big bed, kid on the couch (no room to fold it out to bed) and Grampa on the cot in the kitchenette. In the morning he would fold it up so we could prepare some protein to get us on our way.

The rooms were simple and lovely as most of the resort. They tended to get pretty hot during the day. There are ceiling fans, but also an air conditioner to keep things cool at night. There isn't a screen on the door to allow for natural air flow without bug flow. (Don't forget to ALWAYS wear deet bug repellant!) Bathroom was lovely with a large shower that had dispensers for shower gel, shampoo and conditioner. There is a small balcony that with a view of the whole place and the caribbean. If you just can't handle it, there is a tv with 80some channels as well and wifi is available though sketchy from our room.

The beach front is quite small, but adequate for the amount of people staying there to find a lounge chair or spot at the bar, or even construct a sand castle. Did I mention ALWAYS wear Deet bug repellant? Sand flees. My husband and I sat side by side on the beach one night for an hour. I had repellant on and he did not. I will include a photo of the results no his feet.

The bar has some snack items for sale during the day; a variety of hot dogs, chips and Belizian meat pies (OMG! SO YUMMY), as well as any yummy drink you could want. Have a Mata Colada. One per day may be sufficient....you may need more :-) ! In general the bar tenders are very fun to visit with. I had a lovely conversation about local cuisine with one and given some suggestions of recipes to try when I returned. This is also where you will find the best wifi signal.

A continental breakfast is included with your stay and served at the bar. It is very basic, oj or coffee, melons, sweet rolls and toast. Because Mata Rocks doesn't have a restaurant, you will have to find another place to eat or bring food to your rooms. We ate the provided breakfast with our own scrambled eggs. Either we would eat a late lunch or have a snack from the bar around noon and go out for dinner. Many restaurants close during mid day, but we found these were always open. My favorite place was Elvi's in town. The Belizian Fish Tacos blew my mind! Fido's was a favorite for grampa and the kid as they were on a nacho kick and Fido's were the best we found. Rico's was lovely and just a couple docks north of Mata Rocks. The waitress's were feisty and had a good time. Their shrimp ceviche was yummmmmmy and happy hour panty rippers (don't judge me) were tasty.

Mata Rocks is a good 30 minute walk south of San Pedro proper. They have bicycles for free, first come first served and have to be back by 6pm. They are an adventure to ride! There are also some go carts that you pay about $17us/hour. These came in handy when you wanted to get some groceries or go in for a meal.

We spent a lot of time walking up and down the beach and looking at other resorts. By no means was this the fanciest, but I have to say it had the cleanest beach of any of them. Unfortunately there is a lot of trash and sea debris on the beach every morning and a lot of places just leave it. The guys at Mata Rocks worked very hard to keep it cleaned up for us. They would even show us a treasure or interesting creature that might have made its way to shore.

There is a dock right out front that is handy for any excursions you may have planned. They will pick you up right at Mata Rocks.

All in all, Mata Rocks proved to be the perfect place for our family to enjoy the beach part of our Belize vacation. Most days we just played on the beach or read.

Room Tip: While our room had a view of the beach and I could watch the sunrise in the morning. I think all ro...

This hotel is well worth avoiding if you are planning a trip to San Pedro. Staff ignorant, leaks, big cracks in the tiles in the bathroom dirty shower and to top it all off there was a giant Cockroach crawling in the room. By no means was I expecting the Four Seasons Hotel New York but for the price you pay, you would expect better. Bad doesn't quite cover it. On a different note, San Pedro is absolutely amazing. If it wasn't so beautiful, I think this vacation would have been a complete disaster

A delightful resort, uncommonly good food and the Caribbean’s best snorkeling brightened our mostly rainy week on Ambergris Caye, Belize.

The immaculately maintained Mata Rocks, a shining white boutique hotel, evokes those on the Greek isle of Santorini. Its 17 rooms on two stories surround a pool and front a small beach, with a long weathered dock where pelicans and gulls congregate.

Low-season rates in mid-December include a continental breakfast at the Squirrel’s Nest, where we perched on colorful stools under a palapa, while contemplating the ocean, trading tales with seasoned travelers and enjoying robust coffee, freshly squeezed OJ, pastries and slices of watermelon, pineapple and papaya.

From the balcony of our spacious second-floor suite, we could watch waves breaking on the world’s second-longest barrier reef.

Taxis ($5) took us the couple miles into the bustling tourist town of San Pedro, with its souvenir shops and cobblestone streets full of bikes and cabs but few cars. Here, memorable meals included coconut shrimp and plantains at Caliente; snapper burritos and pineapple shakes at Warugama; crepe-like lobster puposas at The Puposeria; and frozen custard at DandE’s.

Within walking distance of Mata Rocks, we stumbled upon such cheap and tasty treats as cinnamon buns at The Baker; jerk chicken with rice and beans at Robin’s; and grande burgers at Harry’s.

We splurged on one dinner at the critically and popularly acclaimed Hidden Treasure, a candlelit pavilion made of native woods and tucked into a residential neighborhood. Upon being seated, we were each handed a warm, moist, eucalyptus-scented towel with which to freshen up, a nice touch from a restaurant that also offers a free round-trip shuttle service. But what really transported us was the perfectly grilled trio of Caribbean lobster tail, shrimp and grouper with garlic butter and coconut rice. We concluded our evening quietly gazing at the countless stars and almost-full moon, as coconut palm fronds rustled in the balmy breezes.

Not surprisingly, the highlight of our vacation proved to be a daylong sail aboard the 36-foot catamaran Escape, with a stop at the Hol Chan marine reserve, where we snorkeled among nurse sharks, green turtles, Southern and spotted eagle rays and an amazing assortment of fish. We were allowed to handle different kinds of starfish, and a moray eel poked its head out to nibble on a conch. The variety and color of coral was impressive.

We later moored at dusty, laid-back Caye Caulker, just long enough for a snapper sandwich and a rum-raisin cone dockside. Our return to port concluded with more fruit punch, delicious homemade coconut tarts and the satisfaction that we had once again chosen our tropical destination wisely.

Room Tip: We recommend a second-floor ocean view junior suite.
