“Best Honeymoon Ever!”
Reviewed March 11, 2010

My husband and I went to Matachica last March 2009 for our honeymoon and had the time of our lives. The honeymoon package gave you so much for your money! The food is wonderful at the hotel - some of the best on the island. We saw people coming from other hotels to eat at the restaurant at night. We stayed in the Watermelon casita, and have continuously wished we were back in Watermelon for the last year! It was DIRECTLY on the beach and people still say they can't believe that our photos from our casita front porch are real. Staff was always wonderful, friendly, and very helpful. The bartender was the best (thanks for everything!, Oz!). We snorkeled off the dock and kayaked out to the reef. We went into town a few times to shop, eat at Wild Mangoes (very good ceviche), and watch the Chicken Drop at Pier Lounge. We went to the mainland to see Altun Ha. We snorkeled (and fell in love with it - my husband is dying to scuba dive now). There's just so much to do and see in Belize! But there was at least one day where we never left the grounds of Matachica. It's just so beautiful there you don't really want to leave. We wish we could come back again this year! Maybe we will see you all in a few years for an anniversary trip!

My husband took me to Ambergris Caye, Belize - Matachica Resort - for my birthday in February. From the moment we were greeted at the airport to the moment we departed, it was absolute heaven on earth! Matachica Resort is the ultimate in casual Caribbean tropical luxury. It is gorgeous, romantic and fun while also feeling private and quiet. Relaxation becomes a whole new art form at Matachica! Hammocks under the palms, inviting lounge chairs inside and on the beach and pier, cushy pillows and many cozy scenic areas lure you into kicking back. Our private, thatched roof casita was beautifully and comfortably decorated - fresh flowers on the bed and artistically folded linens delighted us everyday after the meticulous room service. There are no TV"S at the resort (they want their guests to be free from the stresses of the outside world) but there is WiFi all over the property. The staff were all most gracious and hospitable and treated us royally. They know each guest by name and are attentive to your every need without being overwhelming - and they were always smiling! The restaurant - Mambo - has a delightful, fresh menu with a very good wine list. The fresh lime, blended margaritas from the bar are the best we've ever had and we live in San Diego!! The resort is a 10 minute boat ride from the town of San Pedro so you are somewhat secluded there - no shopping if that's what you're in to. You are in walking distance from a few other restaurants/lounges or you can get anywhere on Ambergris Caye by water taxi. The staff is very helpful with arranging excursions, diving, snorkeling, fishing trips or whatever else you might want to plan. The spa on sight is fabulous - I had a 90' massage and a facial there - excellent! We loved Matachica Resort and will return!! What a PERFECT birthday!!

My wife and I visited Matachica on our honeymoon, and came away 100% satisfied.

Making travel arrangements was simple. Upon arrival at the "airport" in San Pedro, we were met by staff with a golf cart after waiting for about 20 minutes. We were whisked through the town to one of the many docks on the oceanfront side of town, where we were helped into a boat for an quick ten minute boat ride to the resort. When we arrived, we were met at the dock at Matachica by a staff member who had drinks waiting for us, and were escorted to the check in desk while the staff took our luggage to our room for us.

Our beachfront Casita was exactly as advertised, literally 30 feet from the water. We had a great hammock on the front porch, and pair of luxurious lounge chairs closer to the beach. The casita itself was nice, tropical but not too luxurious. Bed was adequately comfortable, mosquito netting was provided(and needed that time of year). The front doors and windows all had large wooden plantation shutters that could be opened to let in the sea breeze, or closed if you wanted to turn on the air conditioning, which I don't recommend only because it drowns out the sound of the palm trees and waves.

The food was MARVELOUS. Breakfast was included every day. We really enjoyed the chocolate banana pancakes with fresh fruit. The restaurant is also right on the water basically, and the whole building is wide open to the elements. One night at dinner, we even had a large sand crab scuttle by our table. Very cool! With the honeymoon package, dinner was also included and allowed you to pick an appetizer, entree, dessert, and bottle of wine with every meal. One of the most exciting things was planning our dinner every night. The food was very fresh, and plentiful. Our last night there, they even brought a table and chairs out and served us dinner right in front of our hut in the sand.

We really wanted to have a honeymoon that was both romantic but also adventurous, and this place provided both. A few days we just spent laying on our padded lounge chairs on the beach. On days when we were feeling adventurous, the staff provided us with a kayak and snorkle gear. From the resort, you could easily paddle out to the reef, and tie up to one of the buoys that have been placed out there, and simply hop in to water that is only 5 feet deep and snorkle all day! We have been snorkeling many places around the world, and never have we seen so much wildlife. Nurse sharks, sea turtles, giant rays, lots of fish, and GREAT corral, all within a 15 minute kayak trip from the beach at the resort.

We also went on two excursions that were provided as a part of the honeymoon package. One trip was a half day snorkel trip to Hol Chan, a world class snorkel spot. AMAZING. The second trip was a full day trip to visit the Mayan ruins.

Now, we have been on a cruise that had an excursion to see Mayan ruins, and this trip blew that out of the water. A tour guide picked up us and a few other couples from the resort, and took us on an hour long boat ride down the coast. We then headed inland up a long, winding river that was lined with mangroves. Every so often, the guide would stop to show us local wildlife, like toucans, alligators, bats, and orchids. We then stopped in the small local village called Bomba. Not really a village literally 30 people living in makeshift houses in the jungle is more like it. We then boarded an old school bus that took the 10 of us deeper into the jungle and to the ruins. Once we arrived, the tour guide gave us a few brief instructions, and then we were allowed to just explore the ruins on our own for a while. We literally had the whole archeological site to ourselves. No crowds, no tourist traps, just the real thing. Upon boarding back on to the bus, we were taken to the jungle resort of Maruba, where we relaxed in a lavish jungle pool and ate lunch. I had bbq armadillo! And some of the best pina coladas ever. Overall, and AMAZING excursion.

If you are looking for a romantic honeymoon with a bit of adventure, then this is the place!

If you are looking for the party crowd this is not the place for you. We absolutely loved this resort. Private and very quiet. The food was excellent and the service was first rate. The staff made us feel welcome. The guests were some of the finest people we had ever met. This is the perfect honeymoon spot.

If you have ever dreamed of being stranded on a romantic island (with every ammenity you would ever need) + a staff that is amazing, you very well may love this place. If you need casinos, lots of nightlife, and disney type entertainment, do not come here, you will be very disappointed. Resort has a very Eastern Bali feel, lots of unique artwork. The music in the lobby and bar kind of puts you in this island trance. It's a Euro fusion house music, very mellow. When I need to close my eyes, and think of a happy place, this is where I go. Casitas are beautiful and rustic, thatched roofs, shutters, hammocks. Drinks are top notch.

Overall, Matachica truly is a gem. The casitas are lovely, the restaurant serves spectacular food, and all of the employees are kind and accommodating.
I did, however, have a few concerns which I think others should know about before staying here:

-The Spa: While I had an exceptional massage from a very talented masseuse, I was very, very disappointed by the location. The front of Matachica is pristine, but as you travel inland, there is garbage and disarray. The spa is located in the back, and on the day of my massage, there were people working right outside with chainsaws, leaf blowers, etc. The grating sound was constant through the whole massage.

-The Hot Tube: As others have mentioned, it is in a very strange place. As it is literally connected to the seating area of the lounge, both people having a drink while dressed for the evening and those enjoying the hot tub feel awkward. Also, the hot tube did not work for about half of our stay.

-The Beach: I wish I had known before I went that the beach is man-made. The water off shore definitely is not meant for swimming, and so much seaweed washes up on shore that employees are constantly having to rake it away.
