“Perfect Honeymoon at Mata Chica!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 11, 2008

Who eats bananas with guacamole? You might, if you order the scallops from the menu at Mambo, Mata Chica's great restaurant. The food at this resort is wonderful, but hardly the best part of the experience. Some thoughts on who should stay here (it's not for everyone): Mata Chica's rooms are single "houses" with thatched roofs and concrete floors. It is basically a luxury hut with a full bath and daily maid service. The rooms are air conditioned with wall units aimed at the beds and have ceiling fans. If you are looking for the Four Seasons, you will be disappointed. If you are looking for a quiet, clean place to relax and use as a base for activities, go for it.
We were struck immediately by the beauty and quiet of the resort. It is the perfect place for honeymooners and vacationing couples. Families should try somewhere else...
We loved our stay and felt VERY taken care of, especially in the restaurant, bar, and while making activity plans at the front desk. A couple tips: for diving - go with Ecologic, not Belize Academy, for the equipment and professionalism. For activities, we highly recommend diving, snorkeling, zip-lining in the jungle, and cave-tubing. Be sure to bring your bug spray into the jungle! (Only the flies are annoying around Mata Chica).

Quite simply incredible. My wife and I stayed at Matachica for 8 nights in June/July 2008 for our second wedding anniversary. We have both traveled the Caribbean extensively and have stayed at several luxury resorts and believe me, this place is paradise.

From the moment we arrived on the island, our experience greatly exceeded our expectations. Charlie and Chris greeted us as we walked off the plane and escorted us to the resort by boat. While riding to the resort, the staff placed our complementary drink order so it was waiting for us when we arrived at the resort. The staff presented us with warm wash cloths to cleanse with and a delicious rum punch, which we thoroughly enjoyed.

We stayed in a beachfront casita just a few yards from the ocean. Wow, it is the most beautiful view to behold. So peaceful and relaxing. The rooms are furnished with local decor and are situated so that you can enjoy the incredible beachfront view. The reef is approximately 100 yards off the beach and the waves breaking on the reef provide a very relaxing and soothing sound. There are four beachfront casitas and I would recommend any of them, although we are partial to the one we stayed in, papaya.

The resort property was immaculately maintained on a daily, if not hourly basis. My wife and I had the opportunity to view alot of the properties on Ambergris Caye and I can say that the Matachica beach is one of the best in terms of cleanliness, view and swimming capability. In addition, Matachica provides you with kayaks and snorkeling equipment so that you can paddle out to the reef, tie up and snorkel to your hearts content.

I could not say enough wonderful things about the staff and service. Oswald is a fabulous and friendly bartender and his sidekick Ishmael, alias "one lime" was very sweet and friendly. The restaurant staff including Abbey, Myra and Rubins were fantastic! They always greet you with a smile and really want you to enjoy the experience. Dynamite Donald at the front desk is a one of a kind personality and a genuine person. We even spent some evenings after dinner fishing off the dock and playing pool with the security guards Rudolph and Lou and Oswald, the bartender. The Matachica manager Guillan (forgive my spelling) is fantastic. He was always around, always approachable and happy to converse. He even bought us a "going away" round as we left the resort. Believe me, it was hard to leave and many of the staff members gave us hugs prior to our departure.

The resort took care of all of our excursions. You tell them what and when you want to do something, and they make the arrangements. By the way, if you do reef fishing, make sure you go with Chocolate. We had a fabulous time and caught several red snapper, which the amazing Mambo chef Ronaldo cooked for us to perfection! In addition, we went scuba diving with the Belize Diving Academy and had a great experience. The groups are small and you see so many great things. Craig, George and Amy are fabulous and you will not find a better dive master to show you awesome reef life than George.

The Mambo restaurant is incredible and I dare say we have not eaten better seafood in the years we have lived in New York City. For a truly unique and relaxing experience, I wholeheartedly recommend the Matachica Beach Resort. It is quite simply the greatest holiday that I have ever had and has set the bar extremely high for holidays in the future. Oh yes, Matachica we will be back........ a belikan and lighthouse please Ozzie

MAGIC!!!!!

Mata Chica is an oasis of relaxation. From the cozy hammock on our porch, to the exotic garden bathroom, you couldn't help but relax in the island air. The service was attentive and caring from the cold drink waiting upon arrival to ensuring our timely departure in San Pedro. An island retreat, the rooms were tastefully decorated with flavors of Belize; and the food had a flare of artistic Carribean flavors felt from the rest of the island. Mata Chica brings together the cultures of the Caribbean and the Mayan country side; and with it a sense of adventure and new beginnings.

This was the perfect place for a honeymoon. Between the private beach-front casitas, the delicious menu and pool/beachside bar, and the available activities, we spent half of our time relaxing and the other half sea kayaking, snorkeling and touring the ruins. There were a lot of other activities to choose from (cave tubing, ziplining, fishing and more) but we just enjoyed the option of not having to do anything other than eat, drink and enjoy ourselves and the beautiful surroundings. It was a great balance, and every little detail seemed to have been thought out to increase our enjoyment. And the staff is great - Ish is the man! If you're looking for a romantic getaway for two, this is the place.

You get the feeling within moments of arriving at Matachica that you’ve made the right choice. The rum punch helps of course, but overwhelmingly it’s that feeling you get when you arrive at a resort and you just know that you are in for a week of total relaxation, pampering, and escapist activity that’s going to go way too quickly. You can tell by looking at the people who are just a day in.

The beautifully appointed thatched casitas and main house are all set back just a few white sandy steps from the ocean making shoes unnecessary. It’s just one of the many things about Matachica that make you feel very far away from everything you are taking a vacation from. Snorkeling off the barrier reef, kayaking, fishing, a trip into the jungle to explore the Lamanai Mayan ruins, and Luisa the masseuse, also helped.

We celebrated our birthdays at Matachica and the friendly and professional staff prepared a beautiful dinner on the beach of grilled fish that we had caught that day. There was a bonfire, dancing, and a Belican-shaped piñata brought in from town especially for the occasion. We couldn’t have asked for more.

Matachica is a small resort that offers guests all the options of a bigger resort but without the noise, crowds, and feeling of living in an artificial paradise-compound. There is a delicious restaurant, full service spa, and a media room with an extensive DVD collection, new computers and wireless-internet access. In the end, our five days did go by too quickly but we left feeling like we had been away for ten. The only thing that moves at a quicker pace in Belize is the time it takes you to completely disconnect.

I thought that Matachica was a nice place to stay and the whole northern end of Ambergris Caye is very pretty although also very built up. My husband and I stayed for four nights and the food was decent and the rooms were clean and comfortable. We did feel that the staff was a little bit lacking in customer care skills, however, and we found that booking tours was difficult. After we left Matachica, we booked into Thatch Caye Resort in southern Belize and we were truly stunned by how much friendlier the staff there was. The rooms were also more spacious, the surroundings more natural, the wood carvings excellent, and the whole staff was extremely attentive to our every need. And the price was significantly cheaper!!!

I hate to keep repeating the last few reviews here, but really feel strongly about the experience I had at Matachica and had to write.

What a lovely, special place. After a VERY long trip from San Francisco to El Salvador to Belize City to San Pedro and a golf cart and a boat, I really wondered along the way if it would be worth it. Much to my pleasure, it absolutely was.

We stayed in one of the two bedroom suites and had lots of room. Comfortably decorated, we appreciated the lovely linens, the air conditioning, and the hammock on the deck.

We enjoyed eating at Mambo and found the food to be of very good quality and the prices not out of line with any good resort food. We did get a little tired of the same menu after a few days and ventured into town, to Portofino, and to Rojo Lounge for a few meals. While we really loved the variety and creativity at Rojo Lounge (try the habanero hummus), we found the food at Mambo to be far superior to Portofino.

The staff is so friendly and warm and really go out of their way to be of service. I believe they take great pride in this resort and it shows. We hugged a few of the employees we met upon leaving because they were so wonderful during our trip and I have to say that is the first time I've ever done that while on vacation - certainly never felt the need to do that at the Four Seasons.

We timed our trips into town around the resort boat's departure times, which may impede your plans a little, but was not a big deal to us. After spending some time in town, we agreed that we made the right decision giving ourselves a little space and staying up north at Matachica.

We would definitely recommend Matachica to friends. It is casual and friendly, while at the same time maintaining a level of sophistication. We enjoyed our stay immensely and can't wait to go back!
