We loved Mata Chica. We had an ocean front casita and we were ready to stay forever. The staff were very friendly and helpful. We enjoyed Mambo, the wait staff was great. The best thing about Mata Chica was the ten minutes it takes to kayak out to the reef. Fantastic! Our only gripe was the coffee situation. We left very early on most days and couldn't get coffee. A coffee maker in the room would have been fantastic. The coffee at Mambo was just passable. We discovered the Rojo Lounge at Azul, the resort next to Mata Chica and they have 11 kinds of espresso!! God bless them. Unfortunately not open for breakfast. We had to get our coffee fix at lunch and dinner. If you get the chance to eat there,do. I think the chef is a genius. It just might be the best food we have ever had. We had the best time in Belize and can't wait to go back!!

Matachica Beach Resort, Belize:
The beginning of our week in paradise began with champagne upon arriving on the "Mambo" boat. We were shown to our "Casita" (our bungalow) which was very quaint with an Island flavor. From the hammock on our porch to the flower petals on our bed every day...it was perfect! Our Casita was about 50 feet from the beach so we woke up every morning to the sun rising over the ocean....all we need do, was to sit up in bed and there it was! We went kayaking (complimentary), snorkled, swam in the pool, lounged in the hot tub, played pool in the lounge, and dined in the restaurant. The food was very good and there are other restaurants within walking distance. We enjoyed time with some of the other guests and hope to stay in contact with them in the future…perhaps meet up with again at Matachica! We went Scuba Diving with Ecologic Divers who were very professional, another great experience. Took the Mambo boat to town to shop and dined at other wonderful restaurants. Seafood is definitely the thing to order! Every place we went we experienced pleasantness and a general feeling that you are welcome.

The thing I will remember forever is the warmth and kindness of the "family" at Matachica. We never once felt anything but welcomed by these gracious people! They went out of their way to make our stay a great experience! Thank you all so very much...we'll be back!

Having stayed at world class resorts all around the world, we approached our stay with both excitement and some trepidation about the rusticness of Ambergris Caye and the resort at Mata Chica. Any and all concerns that we had melted away within moments of first meeting members of the staff at the airport in San Pedro and then being whisked away on the Mambo boat to the resort itself.

Belizeans in general and the staff at Mata Chica in particular are among the warmest, friendliest and most gracious folks we have met anywhere in Mexico, the Caribbean islands or Central America. To a person, people wanted to know us and indeed came to know us in ways that were ingratiating and not at all intrusive.

From being greeted with celebratory drinks upon arrival, to making arrangements for snorkeling or dinner off property, to answering simple questions about the caye, everybody was incredibly informative, helpful and gracious. By the time our 7 day stay was over we had come to see Mata Chica as our home away from home.

We stayed in Tangerine, one of the casitas situated 50 feet from the water front. It was lovely in a warm, rustic, native and down to earth way. The rose petals on our bed and in the bathroom were a lovely touch. The bathroom was nicely sized and well appointed. The netting blanketing the king size bed was not only a very functional addition but provided us with great comic relief as it got caught up in the blades our our ceiling fan during our first night of romantic revelry during our stay.

The complimentary sea kayaks were great and we took one out about a mile plus almost to the barrier reef. The pool, while small, was clean and nice. The food was quite nicely done. Definitely go for the seafood as all of the guidebooks suggest and stay away from the beef which is rather tough and undistinguished. The casual bar was just what the doctored ordered. Fun space, billiard table, enjoyable and comfortable oversized soft chairs and mini-love seats, and Oswald the main bartender was an absolute delight. Ask him to make you one of his "Blue Things", you will not be disappointed. It was also a lovely venue for enjoying a good cigar.

All in all we had a lovely time at Mata Chica. Lovely, great food, Blue Things. But what we will absolutely postively remember and cherish the most was the feeling of being genuinely welcomed into the family. What a rarity these days, particularly in the Caribbean.

So if you are heading off to Ambergris Caye (adults without children since this is really not a kids place) you cannot top this resort.

We will definitely return again. So thanks Griselle, Anita, Vahsti, Reuben and Oswald, we had a great time. And Danny (the owner), you have created something special here so please continue to nuture it and make it even better.

My husband and I stayed in Mata Chica for 7 nights, and our feelings are mixed.

The location is fantastic, the beaches and the surrounding atmosphere could not be faulted.

Here comes the negative stuff:

The biggest disappointment with Mata Chica was the fact that we had to pay about US$160 extra for something which we should not have been charged for and that we were treated very badly when we disputed this. $160 in the grand scheme of things isn't a large amount at all, however, we were treated dreadfully and called liars.

On our first day we asked what was covered by our breakfast, we were told by our waitress anything from the full breakfast menu. I confirmed it again the following morning. To our dismay when our final bill arrived, we were asked to pay for our breakfast! We were ultimately called liars and that no waitress had said the full breakfast was covered. The receptionist was rude and unkind.

Also there is a mandatory 15% service charge on everything, it is obvious why it is mandatory, because you would not pay it if it is optional, the service is what you may expect from a 2 star B&B.

The cabana we stayed in was rundown, and the cleaning service was poor. When your accommodation is on the beach you would expect the sand to be swept off the floor, yet somehow this had failed to register with the staff.

The restaurant is mediocre, the food we ate in the local restaurants in San Pedro was much better quality, size and price. The service in the Mambo restaurant was poor, you had to ask several times for water, drinks, and meals would arrive at random, not in the order requested.

Overall it depends what you are expecting from the place, we had stayed in Blancaneux Lodge previously where the service and cabanas were amazing and completely faultless, and we were expecting a similar level of service. If you don't expect a 4 star service and are interested in the beaches, then it is a very good place to go to, otherwise I would look elsewhere.

I very much regret the check out experience of our guests and assume full responsibility for a poorly handled situation. Our guests were under the mistaken impression that a full american breakfast was included with their stay. Instead as was clearly indicated on the many vouchers, emails, and other materials, only continental breakfast was included. Upon check out this became an issue. Our front desk 'check out' staff could have done better. While we were absolutely correct about the charges, it was very unfortunate that we somehow failed to manage this misunderstanding better and to the satisfaction of our guests..

However, to accuse us of poor housekeeping due to sand on the floor of a beach cassita and to attack our staff and service as sub par is, I believe, entirely unfair to the 30 hardworking people who go out of their way to do everything that they can to ensure that our guests have a memorable and comfortable stay. I believe that the misunderstanding at check out led our guests to stretch well beyond fair. I would invite you to consider the many other tripadvisor reports that consistently focus on the service and staff as exemplary.

I remain disappointed that these particular guests left on a sour note, but remain committed to continue to serve our guests with care, attention and professionalism.

Matachica is a very special place.Unique in it's location, beauty, charm and service. We are determined to be the best!
