“Victoria House - 1st class resort”
Reviewed October 5, 2006

We spent the last week of September, 2006 at Victoria House south of San Pedro, Belize. The resort exceeded our expectations and we had 7 days of heaven. The grounds are beautifully manicured and tended to regularly. It is right on the ocean facing out to the Barrier Reef a mile or two away, which calms the waves. The sands are white and there are lots of fish that you can see along the shore and from the dock. The gourmet food at the resort restaurant was excellent and we ate there almost every meal. The swimming pools (3 of them) are beautiful and clean.

We were there during the rainy season and expected lots of clouds and were worried about hurricanes. Weather.com said it was likely to rain every day, but there was only rain 3 out of the 7 days for 15 minutes to an hour per day. There were some clouds at times, but usually lots of sunshine and very warm.

The best part about Victoria House is the staff there. They were very professional, helpful and warm. We can't say enough about that. From the lady who turned down our bed in the evening, to the office managers, to the restaurant and bar staff, they were the best. There is a full-time recreation director who arranges tours and they were great. We went snorkeling and swam with sharks (harmless), took a trip to the jungle and Myan ruins and a romantic sailing trip along the island.

I do have one suggestion about San Pedro in general. There is an easement so anyone can walk along the beaches for miles. But long walks along the shore to the middle of town are NOT recommended. Many of the property owners along the way don't keep their beaches as clean and manicured as does Victoria House. In fact, to say that some are untidy is just a hint. Victoria House has workers that go out every morning and rake up any seaweed or debris that comes in over night and they rake the sand so it is nice and smooth at the resort.

We relaxed on comfortable reclining beach chairs a lot of the time. We also rode bikes and a golf cart into the middle of town to shop. The people of San Pedro are very friendly and wave and say hello. Many homes are unkept, but the people seem very happy.

I definitely recommend the resort and we plan on going back. We saw other resorts from the middle of San Pedro south and none compared except possibly Banyan Bay which also has nice beaches but would have a tough time matching Victoria House's service and staff.

  • Liked — The service and staff.
  • Disliked — Proximity to other beaches that were very messy.
  • Tips/Secrets — Use the great restaurant here. If you can ride a bike, use it to get around San Pedro.

Victoria House is quite beautiful and I believe one of the most beautiful places to stay on the island. The attention to detail to the rooms is superb. The flowers that they leave in the room are a wonderful touch and love the canopy. The main pool is wonderful with a great view of the ocean which is breathtaking.

The only bad things about Victoria House is the price and food and activities being in USD. Huge difference in price for booking excursions and trips in town rather than through the hotel. I am not sure why it is hiked up. Also not quite sure if it was not busy, why they did not give us a better room. There were so many rooms that were empty and we got the little studio. The food was great, a bit overpriced. Frankly, about 3-4 star food but at 5 star prices. $11 nachos, need I say more. It was good though, but even in LA it's not that steep. The only other bad thing is that it is really catered for Newlyweds, it is really romantic but leaves others kind of in the cold in terms of level of service and amenities.

Otherwise a wonderful time in Belize. Be sure to include half your time in the jungle.

Victoria House is a fantastic vacation destination! We went for our honeymoon and had the best experience. The staff is amazing and very friendly (missed my wifes birthday due to the wedding prep and they helped create a very nice surprise for her) The head of the restauraunt, Osar, is great. The staff are all very professional, competent, and fun.

We booked on line directly with the resort, based largely on feedback from this site. We found the resort to look exactly like the photograps on VH website- very reassuring.

The property is well kept and looks immaculate. The food at the restauraunt was exceptional- portion size was more than adequate. We ate our meals at the resort (we had the romance package) and even if we did not have the package, would have taken most meals at the resort, especially dinner. Great food- can't say that enough.

The beach is well maintained, but as with the entire island not swimmable via beach. Swimming from the end of the peir is great.

Javier is wonderful at arranging activities- although I think that activities can be found at a lower rate if not booked through the resort. However, we had great guides for our scuba trip and the Mayan ruins trip which is worth something.

If considering the "romantic sail" be advised that you are not the only couple on the boat. Not romantic, but a fun sail nonetheless.

We stayed two nights at the Victoria House in August 2006. The hotel is very lovely, and the room was clean, cool, and tastefully decorated. The staff at the Victoria House were a bit off their game, in my opinion. They were "going through the motions" One evening I waled into the loby and two staff members were throwing a football back and forth. They acted a bit like I interrupted their fun.

The beach is absolutely fantastic with a wonderful coconut palm canopy to keep you well shaded and cool. The property on the North side of the resort is very unkempt and at times the seaweed on their beach really produces an aroma...

The menu and food is probably the most expensive on the island. I recommend Rico's at Banyan Bay for reasonable prices and a great view. Try the stewed fish over rice and beans.

There was a wedding the nights we were there, they promised the band would stop at 9, ran until close to 10. Not a problem for us, but I have appreciation for resorts that live up to their commitments.

Victoria House is a peacful, quiet setting ideal for a getaway. I recommend it highly.

We stayed at the Victoria House Thanksgiving 2004 and when I'm asked about my favorite vacations I often think about our trip to Belize. In fact, a huge part of the fondness for Belize was our stay at the Victoria House. This is truly a peaceful, beautiful and luxurious retreat. Our photos speak volumes about the experience... which is my reason for resubmitting a review. I think our pictures are more telling than the candid photos currently posted.

We just returned from a week-long honemoon stay at Victoria House. The property is absolutely gorgeous and immaculately maintained. There are a number of grounds crew on the staff, and they keep this property simply beautiful. There is construction going on at the hotel, but is not terribly noticeable -- we stayed in a casita directly next to/in front of the construction site, and were not really disturbed at all during our stay. Our casita was one of the renovated ones, and it is spacious. Our only issue was that since the mosquito net MUST be used at night, it could get a bit warm in the casita (even with the A/C and ceiling fan on, the mesh of the mosquito net is quite tight and restricts air movement). However, this was a small inconvenience compared to possibility of getting nibbled on by mosquitos, sand fleas and other itchy critters!
Even though it's "off-peak" season, there was a high number of staff present. The food at Admiral Nelson's bar and Palmilla Restaurant was very good, but to be honest, nothing spectacular, particularly at the prices (between $20-35US for entrees). The Fantasea dive shop was happy to assist us with planning our excursion to Lamanai and provided a wealth of information about all of the trips and excursions possible.
Although Victoria House is lovely, and by far the most beautiful and "exclusive" property on Ambergris Caye, we were a bit disappointed in the level of service presented and received. Make no mistake -- all the staff we encountered were friendly, kind and responsive to our queries and/or small requests. However, despite ample staff, there was never anyone who came by the pool and asked if anyone needed anything (drinks, extra towels, etc). This didn't initially bother us, as we figured that we were "spoiled" by our experiences at other, larger, 5-star resorts throughout the US and Caribbean, but then we noticed a new crop of guests arriving during the last day of our stay, and the staff was racing around the resort and falling all over themselves to meet every whim of the new arrivals. We discovered that the new group of guests were part of a wedding that had rented out the entire resort for the remainder of the week ....this left a bit of a bad taste in our mouths, as it seemed that our relatively "small" expenditure for our honeymoon didn't merit the same level of service that the approxmately $250,000 resort "takeover" did. Too bad, really, as it is a gorgeous place with a relaxing atmosphere.

Victoria House is a wonderful place with a gorgeous beach!! The grounds are beautifully kept, staff attentive, and an overall relaxing atmosphere. It is by far the nicest place to stay on the island that we could tell.
We finished off a 12 day vacation to Belize (3 days at Chaa Creek, 3 days at Roberts Grove) with 4 days at Victoria House. As soon as you turn into the property from the dirt road, you are met by beautifully manicured, plush green lawns, and white sand driveway. The hotel did not pick us up from the airport but told us if we took a cab they would cover it and they did, tip included. Check in was smooth, bags were stowed away because we arrived very early in the morning so our room was not ready. The pool area is lovely and beach is just amazing with white sand. They do have a retaining wall for part of the beach so you can't just walk into the water, but if you go further down the beach you can walk in. They rake what little sea grass washes ashore daily.
We stayed in a Plantation room the first two nights and Casita #3 the next two. We preferred the Plantation room just because it stays cooler. Both rooms have the same basic set up with the most heavenly beds! The secret to keep things cool in the casita is to turn the ceiling fan off and leave the ac on. We had read that in a previous review and it worked. In the casita you can sometimes hear your neighbors if they get a bit randy but we just had a good laugh at that.
The staff was simply amazing at taking care of us. The whole reason we came to Belize was to dive the Blue hole. I did not realize it would be hard to get a trip out but being as we were there at the beginning of the low season, only one boat was going and it was full. I did not try to book our diving through the hotel, instead tried to do it on my own. Tip: use the hotel! The biggest dive shops on the island all work with each other to fill boats for the Blue hole since it is a 2 1/2 hour ride out one way. VH also works with them. So, my husband left me at the bar in panic mode to go see the front desk and asked them for help. I was resolved to the idea that we weren't going to be able to go when the activities manager (who closes shop at 4pm) found us at the bar at 5pm and told us we were going diving the next day. They had also waived the cancellation fees for the tour we had set up for the next day that you are supposed to cancel by 3 if you aren't going. The Blue hole is a phenomenal dive. My husband has over 1000 dives and ranks this as one of the top. It is so different than any other dive you will do. Swimming through stalagmites and tites in the ocean at 110ft with 7-8ft sharks all around was surreal! Half moon caye had visibility of 100ft +. Lighthouse reef excellent as well. You usually do all 3 on the trip with lunch on Laughing bird caye. We went with Aqua divers and they were a very professional operation.
There were honeymooners/couples at VH when we stayed but some children showed up with families for a wedding the day before we departed. The houses with the private pools looked very nice and were a little down the beach, removed from the main area which is perfect if you want peace and quiet.
We rented a golf cart two days and went exploring all through town and way up on the north side of the island which was a ton of fun! We had lunch at Mata Chica on the north side, very good. We had drinks with friends at Fido's bar in town which has a HUGE thatch roof and is the biggest bar on the island. They usually have a live band playing, lots of fun. They were in Travel and Leisure's magazine for best bar in the Caribbean for either 2003 or 04(the cover is framed on their wall). We had sushi in the restaurant upstairs twice and it was very good! We strolled through and had drinks at Ramon's which looked nice though some friends were staying there after having stayed at Victoria House and hated it. We wanted to eat at Mango's but it was closed due to Chef Amy (formerly of VH) being at the "Taste of the Caribbean". All the locals we talked to said this was the place to go.
Overall, staying at Victoria House was a fabulous way to end our vacation and we would not stay anywhere else on the island. Victoria house exceeded our highest expectations on beauty, cleanliness, and service. We will recommend it to everyone who is thinking of traveling to San Pedro.
The biggest tip of all though is BRING BUG SPRAY or you will get eaten alive. The only time we have experienced mosquitoes as bad as here is when we lived in Alaska. We had no problems in San Ignacio or Placencia.
