“Amazing - Best Vacation Ever!”
Reviewed August 4, 2009

Writing this for Connie and Daryl (from the couple on the plane!)... Victoria House was simply wonderful. The accomodations were so perfectly unique, the staff was very gracious and hospitable, and the location was ideal. You are steps from the beach, yet with beautiful pools abound, and just far enough from town to be removed but accessible via a 5 minute golf cart ride. This is the only vacation I have taken where I know we will go back to the very same place and stay at the exact hotel (hopefully the same casita!!). We hope you choose to visit - it was complete paradise!

My husband and I, along with two friends, stayed at Victoria House in San Pedro. This was our first trip to Belize, we were blown away with every aspect of our trip! Initially, we were very impressed with the well kept grounds and the beautiful villa we stayed in. The beach is soft, white sand and VH has two refreshing pools. I very much enjoyed the shade that was provided by pool umbrellas as well as a covered dock. Despite the warm weather, you never felt over heated due to the light sea breeze!

My husband and I are usually stay at large resorts on vacation, but the smaller size of VH added so much to our stay. The atmosphere of VH is very warm and friendly. You really get to know the wonderful staff members and other guests. Every staff member we encountered, from our initial greeting to our last drink at the bar, was friendly, knowlegeble, and hard working. The service is outstanding, all your needs are met! Additionally, the staff is very fun, entergetic and provide excellent suggestions for dinner (on and off the resort), excursions, and other activities. Also, the staff was very helpful in arranging transportation to downtown, the airport, etc. I felt that regardless of the question or request, the staff at VH were happy to honor that or help you solve your problem.

Another great component of this trip was the food! We enjoyed incredible food at VH in the dining room as well as the bar. The Molten Chocolate Lava Cake is a must have! I enjoyed each meal we ate there. We also had fantastic meals at Wild Mangos and had an awesome time eating at Caliente and watching the Chicken Drop.

We had a blast on our trip, but the best part was the relaxation! The great thing about San Pedro is that you can be as laid back as you'd like or as busy as you'd like. We returned home from our trip rested and relaxed! We can't wait to return to Victoria House!

My husband and I just returned from our 20th Anniversary trip! Staying at the Victoria House was the best possible choice on Ambergris. (Everyone we met on the island was envious we they discovered where we were staying!). There's nothing quite like the Victoria -- so picturesque, romantic and peaceful. The casitas are super-cool, we thoroughly savored our own patio and hammock with Caribbean view, beautiful plants and singing birds everywhere, as well as the exquisite furnishings inside. Service on the resort was friendly and accommodating. Restaurant dining was delicious (but not inexpensive). A "Romantic Winner" for a reason -- I'd probably take children elsewhere -- perhaps look into Ramon's Village. But no other resort I peeked into came even close to the stunning surroundings of Victoria House.

We spent the first 3 nights of our Belize honeymoon at Victoria House and I don't think we could have chosen a better location. We wanted somewhere to relax and recover from the long, cross-Atlantic flight and all the frantic activity leading up to our wedding, and Victoria House offered just that. The rooms, grounds and the beach were all immaculate - it was like being in a little piece of paradise and we could easily have stayed in the resort for our entire stay just enjoying the setting and watching the magnificent frigatebirds and pelicans fly past. We noted that there must have been as many staff as guests beavering away quietly in the background keeping everything in order. There was quite a strong breeze coming off the sea for our entire stay which helped to take the edge off the heat and was very pleasant.

Jetlag had affected our appetites so we were glad to have chosen to stay on half-board as it also gave us the opportunity to sample a couple of the local restaurants in town - Wild Mangos and Sunset Grill - both highly recommended. We also really enjoyed the food at Victoria House. The breakfasts were ample and delicious and we also enjoyed a really nice evening meal there on our first night. Even though they have a top restaurant in the resort, we were impressed that they didn't pressure guests into eating there - in fact the front desk were quite happy to make reservations and arrange taxis when we wanted to eat out. The waiters/waitresses were very attentive and we'd especially like to compliment the man with the short pony-tail (sorry we didn't catch his name) who was really friendly, happy to answer questions, offer advice and chat.

We stayed in one of the casitas which was lovely and had a great view of the gardens and sea from the veranda. The bed was very comfortable, the air-conditioning effective, the huge shower was fantastic, and the windows well screened to keep the bugs out (not that we had much of a problem with bugs there). Beach towels are provided for use by the pool and on the beach. Large containers of purified water and purified ice are kept regularly topped up in the rooms. We were also given vouchers on arrival for a free drink in the bar. Although our stay was over the peak Easter season, it never felt too busy or overcrowded which was great as we just felt we could completely relax and enjoy the resort at our leisure.

Customer service was excellent. We managed to catch an earlier flight into San Pedro than scheduled, so I phoned Victoria House from Belize City to let them know and they had someone waiting to pick us up when we landed.

We arranged one trip through Victoria House whilst during our stay: snorkelling at Shark Ray Alley and Hol Chan Marine Reserve. It was very easy to arrange - we just spoke to the man at the dive shop and at the scheduled time a boat arrived at the pier to whisk us off to swim with some amazing sea life (turtles, sharks, sting rays, barracuda, grouper, and lots more) only about 10 minutes ride away.

We also took the complimentary bikes into San Pedro one day which was an experience as they don't have breaks or gears. You have to pedal backwards to stop, which was ok once we got used to it. San Pedro is a town with a buzz; definitely the most touristy place we found in Belize but not in a bad way. One night there we were encouraged to watch a "chicken drop" which was something like a lottery involving a hen pooping on a number board. It sounded interesting but we already had a dinner reservation so we declined.

We loved our brief stay at Victoria House. With so many great memories to look back on, it seems we must have been there much longer than just the 3 nights.

We enjoyed our time at Victoria House, especially the watersports and the romantic dinner we had one night under the stars on the beach. It's in a great spot (quiet and secluded) but close enough for you to be able to ride bikes back into San Pedro for a bit of shopping. It was pricey, but everything ran to plan and it was nice not to worry about paying for extra dinners etc.

Whilst the locaction of Victoria house is slightly outside of San Pedro, it is stunning and the best hotel on the island. All the services were there in place and it was a little overpriced but genuinely lovely. It was full of honeymooners ( including us) which made it feel a little inpersonal but this didnt spoil the effect. One tip - hire golf buggies from outside of the hotel and dont use the bar as its pretty expensive. The restaurant serves fantastic food and drinks, but again keep an eye on your tab.
We stayed for 4 nights in a casita which was perfect for us, though not huge but then had to change rooms to the back. Whilst these rooms were bigger with TV's they lacked the charm of the sea view casitas. We stayed 10 nights and weren't bored at all!!

If you are thinking of going to VH, think no more. My wife and I celebrated our 10th Anniversary at VH and had an absolutely great experience. The locations was perfect and pristine. Far enough from town to feel isolated and close enough to walk, bike or cart in for a quick meal. Never had to fight for a pool or beach chair or hammock.

Now, if you are looking for someone to be at your side every moment of the day asking you if you would like a drink, then you're at the wrong place. You do occasionally go for long periods of time without seeing someone, but it is not because they are lazy or inattentive, its because you are there to RELAX and they realize that. We've been to several beach resorts around the world, and I personally have never seen a harder working group of people. Someone was always cleaning something. And it is almost deafeningly quiet sometimes. We walked some of the other resorts, and were certain we made the correct choice.

We stayed in Plantation room #30 to start. It is the only room that shares a balcony with another room. We found that we didn't have enough privacy, and on a casual mention to the front desk, they gave us three options to move. The next day we were in the suite (#30) below us.

The food at the resort is solid. The ceviche, nachos, Cesar salad and shrimp apps were our favorite for lunch or afternoon snack. Make use of the bikes to go into town and stock your fridge with a few of your own Belikins or Rum.

DO - Get a beach side message, go to Hidden Treasure for dinner, snorkel Hol Chan and Shark Ray alley, have breakfast at Estel's, hang with your spouse/partner on a double chase, hang at the infinity pool, lay in a hammock and RELAX
DON'T - Bother going up north, except for Palapa Bar, be surprised when you walk off the property and see how dirty things are, don't be afraid at night, it is very safe.

Oh, and if you stay in a casita, realize that thatched roofs don't have a lot of noise insulation. A pair of young honeymooners kept all of us at the pool quite entertained one day!
