We spent 10 days at El Pescador for our honeymoon and it was more than we expected. Working with Chris to get everything planned was so easy, and the service from the minute you step off the plane is phenomenal. The staff is great here and one of our favorite things about the trip. We met a lot of great people as well, and the family style meals were a cool way to do things, and the bar was a fun spot. We were looking for somewhere we could fish for a few days, but also enjoy everything on the days we weren't fishing. It definitely didn't feel like everything shut down until the fishing groups got back--being served lunch by the pool was very nice, and we got to go on a snorkeling trip that was set up by the office (would recommend the 1/2 day snorkeling trip vs the catamaran trip unless you want to see Caye Caulker). The food was fantastic, we didn't have dinner offsite once although that is something you can do if you want. The villas are very luxurious-spacious and comfortable. Our fishing guide Tomas put us on a ton of fish and we had a great time with him. We also took the kayaks out on the lagoon in the back of the property which was fun as well. We are already joking that we need to come back for a 3 month anniversary trip---great vacation, great lodge, highly recommend it!

Fantastic stay with the entire El Pescador family. Ali, Alonzo and Lori Ann were great hosts along with their entire helpful, friendly staff. Fishing guides (Sineo and Raton) knew where the fish were and provided great days on the water. Pool and bar were the gathering place after fishing. Family style seating for dinner was a great way to share daily experiences with and to meet other guests. Would not consider staying any other place on Ambergris Caye. Anxiously looking foward to our next stay at El Pescador.

The food was fabulous. The accomodations were fabulous (we stayed in a Villa). The staff was fabulous. The drinks were fabulous. Even though I don't fish, I had a blast snorkeling, swimming in one of the 3 pools, taking their resort scuba course - I'm hooked - laying by the pool, riding a bike into town, walking down the beach, working out, petting the wonderful dogs, Nahla and Zeus! It was also like going home in the sense that the meals were served family style and they were so wonderful that I couldn't help but relax. While there, I met and got to know, really well, really cool people. If the meals had not been served family style, I probably would not have had as much fun. The owners are a family, and they have really made it place you would like to come back to over, and over. I intend to! They were kind, even when I freaked out on a scuba dive trip -- they just found a better, less threatening place to guide me on a dive -- instead of cancelling it. They just told me to relax and all would be okay. And it was! I highly recommend Alonzo the scuba instructor - if he can teach a nervous nellie like me to scuba dive - he's got patience and wisdom of a god!

El Pescador is a stunning spot, with an amazing history. Evolving from a storied Gulf fly fishing lodge under the stewardship of the Spiros family, it now offers clients a pampered but still authentic Belize experience. You're welcomed on a first-name basis the second your water taxi arrives at the dock, and that attention continues throughout your stay. Expert staff and resources. An array of accommodations are now available, from highly upgraded "angler" rooms, to multi-room and multi-story villas. Dining particularly nice, especially evening dinner outside and under the palms. This is an amazingly well run spot, catering to whatever you want to do personally. Just remember, you are on the coast, so doing things inland requires a little time and a bit of a trip. On the other hand, if it's water activities you want, it's at your doorstep. Highly recommended as a family, couples and individual getaway. We've gone to Belize for more than 25 years -- El Pescador now tops our list.

From the reservations specialists, to the wait staff, to the fishing guides, to the housekeeping department, the folks at El Pescador are totally committed to making sure their guests feel welcome and attended to. With its smaller size, congenial atmosphere and communal meal service, this property has the feel and charm of a bed and breakfast, but with much, much more to offer.

You arrive at El Pescador's dock facility via water taxi where you are swarmed upon by various staff members who are there to welcome you, assist you to dry land and whisk your luggage and other belongings off to your room. Usually, by the time you can orient yourself, meet a few people and be escorted to your room, everything is arranged and waiting for you. Very nice indeed! At the time of your departure the whole procedure is performed in reverse.

In addition, El Pescador is an excellent idea for persons with physical disabilities. My spouse has rheumatoid arthritis, so one of the primary reasons for our trip was to get a break from the cold. If you are in a similar situation, simply request a room on the ground floor of the main lodge building. With the possible exception of the swimming pools, most people wil be able to navigate just fine and fully enjoy all the amenities.

It's true that El Pescador caters to the angling crowd and they do it well, but it would be a serious mistake to think that's all they do. The efficient office staff can expertly and painlessly (for you) arrange for you to enjoy any of the activities or excursions the area has to offer - and the choices are many.

One of the truly unexpected pleasures of our stay at El Pescador was the other guests. At almost any other hotel or resort where one might stay, the other guests may give a passing nod, or a curt greeting in the elevator, or something of that sort. Not so here. Within a day - and especially after our first supper - we found ourselves among a new set of friends with whom we were living the good life and soaking up the uniqueness of the El Pescador experience. Many of us made sure to exchange contact information for the purpose of sharing photographs, or in hopes that we may encounter each other again sometime in the future.

Then, of course, there is the fishing. Many other reviewers have done an excellent job of articulating their positive experiences. I must say though, almost all the complaints I have read pertaining to the fishing are the absolute reverse of my experience. We traveled with another couple and we boys fished for 5 straight days - full days. Not for one minute of that time can I think of anything I would complain of. If, like me, you don't cast very well, then say so. The guides are experts at what they do and can still put you in a position to catch fish. If you want to try for only one particular species, then let that be known. You can be paired with a guide that maximizes your chances of success.

In my humble opinion, if a guest at El Pescador has an unsatifactory fishing experience, it's likely to be the guest's fault for not being objective about his/her abilities, or not communicating well about their preferences, or how they would like things to change.

The fishing guides and activities are now under the direction of Lori-Ann Murphy who is, herself, a renowned fishing guide and champion distance fly caster. Despite her wealth of accomplishments in the world of fishing, she is completely unpretentious. She loves to fish herself and she is drop-dead serious about helping you have the best possible experience. When you meet her, she she is quick to laugh and smile, and she exudes that easy confidence which comes from knowing of what she speaks. Lori-Ann and the owners of El Pescador are heading down the path of making this special place even more of a world-class fishing destination than it currently is. I wish them the greatest success.

In summation, our trip to El Pescador was precisely the right destination, at precisely the right time, for precisely the right reasons. Every aspect of our visit met or exceeded our expectations Our 6 night / 5day stay was not nearly long enough, so we will be returning soon. Who knows... we might even make it into San Pedro next time.

My husband and I spent a week at El Pescador in March 2010. We knew Belize has beautiful coastlines, and great diving and fishing. We didn't know just how beautiful Ambergris Caye truly is, and we did not expect the overwhelming level of service, comfort and quality we experienced at El Pescador. The management helped arrange our trip, from local flights/boat rides to the resort, to fishing and diving through El Pescador, as well as numerous other activities using outside tour vendors. All of our arrangements were made accurately and expediently. Marlin at the front desk was beyond a pleasure to work with, she was a true professional in arranging all our activities. When we weren't fishing, diving or exploring, we had a wonderful time at the oceanfront pool. The grounds are gorgeous with mature palms and other plantings that compliment the classic lodge structure. We stayed in a one bedroom villa that is detached from the lodge, which was supremely comfortable with a king bed and gorgeous, tiled shower. We slept with the windows open all evenings except two, when the temperature crept up approaching ninety degrees. The rest of the time we fell asleep listening to the breeze and the ocean. The food at El Pescador was a huge shift from typical "resort fare". All the food is made from scratch, mostly from local ingredients. The result was flavorful, healthful, and high quality. Even better than the food was the high quality of conversation with other guests during the commual dinners. Marianno and Susana made sure we were always 100% satisfied with our meals. My husband had a few boxed lunches prepared by the staff for his fishing and diving days, which were also excellent. After dinner (and before dinner!) we relaxed at the open air bar where Antonio was happy to pour our favorite drinks for us, with a smile. Everyone on the staff treated us similarly - we were greeted by name each day, by everyone from the pool maintenance staff to the Dive Master and Fishing Management team. We truly felt welcomed and appreciated by such a warm staff. Most of the guests that we met was also very outgoing, and we exchanged contact information with several couples in the hopes of crossing paths again. El Pescador is situated about 2 miles from the town of San Pedro. We biked to town as well as taking the water taxi several times. The town has a much busier vibe than El Pescador, but we felt safe and had some good times/meals at Mango's and Blue Water Grill. We bought water and snacks at the local supermarket and found many cute shops. On the days when my husband fished or dove, I took a snorkel trip on my own, arranged by El Pescador, and had a great time exploring the northern part of the island with about 10 other travelers. The scenery is great during morning walks in either direction, and I would have felt comfortable going in to town on my own, had a not been having such a great time with the other "fishing wives" at El Pescador! My husband raved about the expertise and guidance from Alonso, the dive master, as well as his fishing guide Nesto. The staff absolutely made what would have been a great vacation, an excellent vacation. I can't think of any aspect that was lacking or disappointing, other than leaving! We will definitely be back to El Pescador. Its rare to find a spot so beautiful, with so much to do and see, surrounded by interesting guests and fabulous staff and management. El Pescador gets 5 stars for quality, service, location, and amenities!

Our week long stay was very nice and relaxing. The service from all involved with the lodge was top notch. The food was wonderful fom the traditional and the local fare sense. With me fishing and my wife staying behind on some days, she felt safe and was taken care of by the staff very well. Many activities to choose from from the calm to the exciting. A great place for both couple and families.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
El Pescador’s beachfront lodge and villas are situated on over 45 private acres with ambiance, specializing in fishing, diving and eco-adventures. We are family-owned and operated with emphasis on creating camaraderie and an authentic Belizean experience. El Pescador is proud of our philosophy to protect and nurture friendship, adventure and the environment. El Pescador has long been known as a world-class fishing destination offering outstanding flats fishing for bonefish, tarpon and permit. El Pescador has been the only resort on Ambergris Caye specializing in saltwater flats fishing since 1974. Since coming under new ownership in 1997, the resort has established itself as an eco-friendly tropical getaway, including a commitment to offset all carbon emissions generated by its guests flying to Belize. Donations are made on behalf of guests to a local Belizean non-profit organization, Green Reef Environmental Educational and Coastal Research Institute, to offset the carbon emissions used to travel to Belize. El Pescador was also among the key organizations to implement the new Law protecting bonefish, tarpon and permit as catch and release species. This is the most all encompassing legislation of its kind worldwide. It is great news for Belizeans, anglers, tourists and conservationists alike. El Pescador is a serene and gracious establishment on the doorstep of the world’s largest living Barrier Reef. El Pescador offers accommodations in guest rooms within its colonial style, mahogany main lodge, as well as in 1, 2, and 3 bedroom luxury beachfront villas. The villas are perfect accommodations for couples seeking romance and privacy, and for families and small groups traveling together. All rooms and villas are beachfront and have unobstructed views of the Caribbean blue waters. In addition to unequaled fishing, this first-rate resort offers all the eco-adventures which take full advantage of Belize’s exotic flora and fauna. Scuba diving, snorkeling, manatee watching, cave-tubing and zip-lining, and Maya archaeological explorations are just a small assortment of the activities available while staying at El Pescador. ... more   less
