After a week at El Pescador is was clear why many of the guests were repeat visitors. This resort stands apart from the masses and is in a category of its own. The combination of Belizean warmth, charm, great amenities and an unbelievable staff creates an environment that makes for a perfect vacation.

Traveling with my two adult children the initial attraction of El Pescador was the availability of three bedroom villas. The villas are spacious and lovely. The villas at El Pescador provide the convenience of a fully equipped house while also allowing access to everything a resort has to offer.

Don't think being non-anglers meant we had nothing to do. There are many tours and activities available. We took two through Searious Adventures. (A tour operator I would recommend) You can't imagine my pleasure in spending Thanksgiving Day on a day long catamaran sail to Caye Caulker, being served Belikins and rum punch and munching our way through an unending array of homemade goodies, while watching a group of dolphins cavorting around the bow of the boat.

There were days we each wanted to relax and do our own thing. The pool areas and dock are great for sunning and relaxing. Kayaks are available; there is a good snorkeling spot within easy paddle. Bikes are available to explore the island. Water taxis go into San Pedro town, a ten minute boat ride, on a regular basis.

El Pescador is owned and operated by a family. (They live on premises) The staff proudly wear shirts that say, "El Pescador Family" Together they all create the friendly, accommodating environment that makes for a fun and relaxing vacations. And they are the reason people return year after year.

Ali, Alonzo, Chris, Steve and girls thank you for our great, much needed, vacation. Thanks for the gracious and thoughtful manner you handled our special request. And thank you so much for welcoming us into your family and allowing us to share El Pescador with you

We stayed in a villa that overlooked the coral reef. It was well appointed & very comfortable.
The meals are very healthy & delicious. The staff is very professional. The fishing is great. Our guide, Katchu, is amazing. He is a very patient teacher for catching bonefish. We left every morning @ 6 am to catch lots of them. Lost a tarpon, but didn't see a Permit. Met many fun guests that shared our passion for fishing & fun. Go there to get a Grand Slam! We have to return for ours. :))

El Pescador is an excellent resort for saltwater fishing. The owners are excellent hosts and the staff provides a very pleasant environment. The rooms are clean and well kept. Our family booked a 5 day package for 4 which included 3 daily meals and free drinks throughout the stay. Wine was excluded from the drinks plan. Other than that everything was provided for. Since none of us are expert fly fishermen, it was an advantage that spin fishing was also offered. That guaranteed some great fishing especially for barracuda and snappers. Seems strange that our guides did not allow both persons to fly fish from the same boat. While they know all the good spots, they were not very patient with novices. Issa, on the other hand, is an excellent on- shore teacher who offers free lessons at the resort. A whole day fishing is actually less than 8 hours. Much of the time is taken up with boating to a desired spot. By my calculation, actual fishing time is about 4 hours. I guess it does take time to get around the waters.

Room Tip: Go for the villa option.

We've visited El Pescador 3 times and they continue to get better and better. Our fishing guide, Emir, works hard to get us on the fish. The onsite staff work hard to attend to your every wish. The food is always incredible. This place is heaven! Good job El Pescador. You are definitely earning your awards and reputation.

Room Tip: Upgrade to a villa.

Three of my fly fishing buddies and my self spent a week at El Pescador. The resort is top notch. The accommodations are very nice, the food is very, very good, the bar area and pool are very inviting and the service is outstanding. Their fishing program is great and is highly recommended by folks who know the fishing business. Their guides are extremely knowledgeable and very experienced. The fishing experience was good, but was marred by rain, and lots of it, for most of our stay. Kudos to the guides who found us some fish in spite of the adverse conditions. We will return!

This place is a gem, in an ideal location for fishing or diving. Set up as a expert fly fishing lodge, there are adequate relaxing activities for the non - fishers in your party such as 3 pools , diving and snorkeling or biking. The accommodations are very clean with all amenities, and if you don't find it, the staff will do whatever they can to get it for you. Everyone is so welcoming and helpful. Mariano at the bar, all the ladies in the office and kitchen , Lori- Ann the fishing director and Issa especially are great casting teachers, very supportive. Their specialty is fly fishing, the daily schedule is based on a early to bed and early to rise atmosphere. Most parties leave by 7 a.m. or earlier and return by 3. The guides are second or third generation locals who know the water inside and out.
If you have not done this type of saltwater flats fly fishing before, I'd highly recommend that you practice precise and rapid casting with a 8 & 10 weight rod to at least 40 feet distance. If you want to be successful , you will need to have that mastered at some point. The sooner the better although, they will do their best to teach you as well.
Dinner is 6:45 daily. The food is excellent and plentiful, the all inclusive package is generous with everything except wine and non-rum spirits. A few hundred feet down the beach is a " casino" which we never saw.
I was able to do a couple dives with Chuck and Robbies dive group, which were excellent despite the choppy windy conditions. They came by boat to pick me up and dropped me back after. Visibility was around 60 feet, water temp around 80 with all kinds of sharks, shelled critters, and a nice selection of corals.El Pescador has an in house dive master as well.
If fly fishing is your primary reason for the visit, this is really the only place to consider on the island.
You won't be disappointed.

Room Tip: 2nd level room will get you a partial view of the water

We just returned from 10 days at El Pescador (late Nov. - Dec. 2013). My husband was primarily there for the fishing and I was there for the sun and relaxation. Both of our expectations were fully met!

At the Belize Intl Airport, be prepared for a slow immigration process. We were concerned we would miss our flight ot San Pedro, but learned we didn't have to worry about that. The agents at Tropic Air schedules passengers on flights based on when you check in with them. We traveled to San Pedro on a single prop airplane, which was a blast. The flight takes about 15 minutes. Tip: If you're first in line to get onto the Tropic Air flight, you can select the jump seat to sit in next to the pilot.

Once in San Pedro, one of the baggage handlers contacted Ricardo from El Pescador and he arrived about 5 minutes later. Our bags were put on a taxi and we walked two blocks to the boat ramp for the ride to El Pescador. The boat ride takes a little less than 10 minutes and is really fun. Note: The "welcome drink" communicated on the website happens during the boat ride to El Pescador (beer, soda, or water). I expected something different, like being offered a yummy rum drink upon arriving at El Pescador, and was initially disappointed until I saw other guests also not being offered a welcome drink upon arrival and figured out it is offered on the boat ride.

We were met on the dock by Steve who gave us an overview of the resort, meal times, and ammenities. Our bags were delivered to our room by the time we were finished with the overview. We stayed in one of the standard rooms on the upper floor; room 11. The room was fine: king bed, futon, and bathroom; the rooms are basically a long rectangle. The bed was comfortable, air conditioning worked perfectly, and was clean and tidy. Due to being situated right on the ocean, there are signs of corrosion on the faucets, but that didn't bother us. Hint: There are no tv's in the standard rooms. 2nd hint: Open an ocean facing window and the bathroom window to get a wonderful breeze flowing through the room during the day.

The meals at El Pescador were well prepared and delicious. I'd say the food is 4 star for sure! They offer a lot of variety for the breakfast, lunch, and dinner meals; breakfast and lunch are ate on your own and ordered off a menu. I would have liked more fresh veggies offered for breakfast and lunch, but the salad option at lunch was great. I would have just liked another option or two. Dinners are eaten family style with all of the resort guests. We really enjoyed this and met a ton of really wonderful people. The dinner meal was scrumptious and offered everything from steak to crab claws to stuffed chicken. Vegetarian and vegan options are available.

The bar was great with lots of fun rum drinks to try. If you're on the meal plan, beer, sodas, and rum drinks are included. We're win drinkers, so each glass of wine cost $8, which is added to your final bill. Hard alcohol drinks are also offered and an additional cost. The bar opens at 2pm, but beer is available for lunch or prior to 2pm.

My husband really enjoyed the fishing and caught several bonefish. Neither the tarpin or permit were biting when we were there, but he saw several tarpin who just weren't interested in his fly. He had Hilberto as a guide and the first several days Hilberto suggested they wait to fish due to the high winds. He had enough time at the resort to be picky about his fishing days, so he took Hilberto's advice. When my husband finally did fish, he had a great time. One of the real perks my husband took advantage of was the daily casting lesson offered by Isa. Isa is absolutely wonderful and helps the most novice caster, as well as the more experienced folks. His personality helps keep his instruction friendly, fun, and engaging. Isa is a real shining star at El Pescador!

Overall, we absolutely loved our stay and El Pescador and would definately stay again. We're thinking maybe June 2015 when the tarpin are running. We will probably stay in the top floor of a villa, just so we can have a little more room and a few more ammenities, especially since only one of us fishes. We highly recommend El Pescador for the fisher and sun worshiper!

Room Tip: All rooms offer an ocean view, but the main lodge upper floor rooms have a bit less unobstructed vie...

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
El Pescador’s beachfront lodge and villas are situated on over 45 private acres with ambiance, specializing in fishing, diving and eco-adventures. We are family-owned and operated with emphasis on creating camaraderie and an authentic Belizean experience. El Pescador is proud of our philosophy to protect and nurture friendship, adventure and the environment. El Pescador has long been known as a world-class fishing destination offering outstanding flats fishing for bonefish, tarpon and permit. El Pescador has been the only resort on Ambergris Caye specializing in saltwater flats fishing since 1974. Since coming under new ownership in 1997, the resort has established itself as an eco-friendly tropical getaway, including a commitment to offset all carbon emissions generated by its guests flying to Belize. Donations are made on behalf of guests to a local Belizean non-profit organization, Green Reef Environmental Educational and Coastal Research Institute, to offset the carbon emissions used to travel to Belize. El Pescador was also among the key organizations to implement the new Law protecting bonefish, tarpon and permit as catch and release species. This is the most all encompassing legislation of its kind worldwide. It is great news for Belizeans, anglers, tourists and conservationists alike. El Pescador is a serene and gracious establishment on the doorstep of the world’s largest living Barrier Reef. El Pescador offers accommodations in guest rooms within its colonial style, mahogany main lodge, as well as in 1, 2, and 3 bedroom luxury beachfront villas. The villas are perfect accommodations for couples seeking romance and privacy, and for families and small groups traveling together. All rooms and villas are beachfront and have unobstructed views of the Caribbean blue waters. In addition to unequaled fishing, this first-rate resort offers all the eco-adventures which take full advantage of Belize’s exotic flora and fauna. Scuba diving, snorkeling, manatee watching, cave-tubing and zip-lining, and Maya archaeological explorations are just a small assortment of the activities available while staying at El Pescador. ... more   less
