We arrived at the Villas of Banyan Bay planning to scuba dive at the nearby reef using the Bottom Time dive shop that was on the premisis. We were amazed at the wonderful accomodations. Our villa was 1,000 s.f with two bedrooms, two baths, jacuzzi, full kitchen, dining room and living room with large glass windows overlooking the beautiful, large pool. The staff ensured the villa was well cooled before we arrived and that was so welcoming since we had been really overheated. Everything was so clean and the staff were so nice. There is a full spa at this hotel and I really enjoyed the massage outdoors at the end of the pier with the wonderful seabreezes. Ramon's restaurant has some delicious food and a very nice setting right on the beach. The scuba diving was excellent. It was especially nice that we could reach the reef within a 15 minute boat ride, so we could return to shore between dives.

The hotel is just far enough away from town to be peaceful, but you can easily reach other activities in town by using the free bicycles from the resort or renting a golf cart. We highly recommend this resort to anyone who wants a peacful stay in paradise.

Dear Steve & Linda

Thank you for sharing your Belize Experience with us. It's always nice to hear our guests enjoy our island as much as we do. We are happy to share your compliments with our wonderful Staff. If you'd care to share we would love to see pictures from your dives. Any dolphin sightings?

San Pedro Ambergris is in the middle of Lobsterfest celebrations and we highly recommend your next trip coincide with this annual event. A busy week of street fairs, live music and entertainment all in honor of lobsters, lobsters, lobsters!

Hope to see you in Belize again Masonbrinks.

A co-worker who grew up in Belize told us about Banyan Bay, and we are happy to say that everything she said proved to be true. The beach front condo was impeccably clean and comfortable, and our family of four had a great time. The staff met us with a smile wherever we went, and we loved the food, the free bike rentals, the housekeeping service, the convenient location, peaceful atmosphere, and everything else about Banyan Bay. The only caution is that, like in many other places we've travelled, the beds are not always as comfortable as those at home. The king bed in A2 was way too hard for one of us, but the living room couch provided a comfortable alternative. This is true at hotels everywhere, so it's not meant as a criticism of Banyan Bay -- just a cautionary note for those with sensitive backs.

We traded our week with RCI for Banyan Bay and it was superb. Be aware that a cab will bring you to the hotel from the airstrip..the hotel will pay the fare when you get there...so if they whisk you into a cab really fast...don't worry...it's fine. The property is gorgeous, clean, comfortable and has one of the better beaches as far as I could tell. When we checked in I asked for twin beds for our daughters and they did so with no problem at all. We stayed in H2 right on the beach. The villa was well stocked, Ana our maid did fine job, and Albert from the front desk was always available to get us anything we needed. Do buy gallons of bottled water for drinking, the are only $1.75BZ at the front desk.

The pool and beach were amazing...the seagrass was cleared every morning..the water was clear and warm. The pool wasn't huge, but we must have been there during a slow week..we almost always had the pool to ourselves. The bar at the pool was not open because it was so slow. Btw....they told us April, May and June are the hottest months...and it was HOT..and the rainy season starts in June and brings the mosquitos.

We ate at Rico's twice, dinner and breakfast and it was very good. We quickly learned it is cheaper to eat out than cook in your villa (food is quite expensive except for chicken and fruit.) Walk straight up the street around the bend to Antojitos and D & D's. A homecooked meal at both places for under $10US. Elvi's, Ms. Sara's Kitchen, Blue Iguana all good. Stop at any fruit stand on the road and stock up with local fruits...all delicious and safe. If you buy anything in the grocery stores, watch the expiration dates.

Speaking of safe...we never, ever felt threatened, harassesd or intimidated. We were never approached to buy drugs. The citizens of San Pedro are the sweetest, friendliest, kindest people I have ever come in contact with. Even on the beach walking into town, if they try to sell you anything, a simple no thank you, and they say thank you back. Taxis are readily available and $5US just about anywhere you go.

Since we are members of RCI, June a representative booked trips for us, all fantastic. Do the cave tubing...visit a Mayan ruin, explore the country (I didn't know there were Amish/Mennonites in Belize!) fish, snorkle, do it all. The Wahoo Lounge at the Spindrift Hotel in town has the chicken drop every Thursday (not Wed....it changed nights) It starts at 6 and it's .50 a game...you could win $50US! A lot of fun, mixing locals and visitors together, what a great time.

There is NOTHING negative I can say about Banyan Bay, San Pedro or Belize. I am a Jersey girl and I left my makeup and heels home...no need for any of that stuff. Let your hair blow...walk barefoot and forget the glitz and glam for awhile. Belize is unspoiled, raw and beautiful...not a single hotel or food chain here. So what if you look a mess...you're gonna be very, very happy here.

Room Tip: H building is beaachfront.

We just returned from a vacation to Ambergris Caye with two other families....6 adults and 10 children ages 9-15. Our trip was fabulous for so many reasons!

First, Banyan Bay was the perfect place for our group as it is extremely clean (Anna Garcia is an incredibly friendly housekeeper who does great work!), Rico's Restaurant serves great food in an unbeatable setting on the Carribean Sea, the pool is perfect for the kids, the grounds are extremely well maintained and the accommodations (we had a 2 BR Beachfront Villa) were very comfortable and nice. Banyan Bay has an excellent location near many restaurants and food markets that are easily accessible with a golf cart (Chloros has best golf cart rates on the Caye).

Secondly, Discovery Expeditions Belize is far and away the best tour operator in Belize! They arranged all of our activities and every one was simply outstanding. They were well organized and had knowledgeable staff (Mercedes was our group's host for the week and was great) who were extremely good with our kids. We snorkeled at Mexican Rocks (tons of small colorful fish) and then did the sea trek at Mexican Rocks as well. Sea Trek is an incredible experience for those who are not certified to scuba. Even the 9 year old daughter of my friend was able to participate! It is completely safe and an underwater experience that is a must do while you are in Belize! The party barge that was our home base for this trip to Mexican Rocks had a full bar and grill on it. We ate and drank very well as part of this tour.....do it!
We also snorkeled with nurse sharks and large rays at Shark Ray Alley- another must do experience that Discovery Expeditions arranged for us. There are several large sea turtles and schools of large horse eye jacks everywhere at Shark Ray Alley!!!

Discovery Expeditions also arranged a trip inland for zip lining and cave tubing. Our guides, Roberto and Herbie, were incredibly knowledgeable about the rain forest and served as great hosts and educators for our group. The zip lining experience included approx 10 runs from tree to tree....again a safe experience that was a blast. After zip lining, we had a wonderful buffet lunch on the grounds that everyone enjoyed followed by cave tubing with our trusty guides. Cave tubing was a major highlight. The water was cool, refreshing and crystal clear- something that you would see in the movies!! The cave tour lasted about an hour and a half and provided views of numerous stalagtites (sp?).

Our final tour set up by Discovery Expeditions was a fishing trip for our boys. We fished within the reef in calmer waters (approx 10 feet deep) and caught trigger fish, yellow snapper, black snapper and red snapper....about 20-25 in all. We also caught one nice barracuda. Our Discovery fishing guide, Alfredo (aka "Ted"), cleaned all of our fish at the end of the trip. The great staff at Rico's at Banyan Bay quickly prepared our fish 30 minutes later for an early afternoon dinner!!

I know this review is long, but this was my fifth and very best trip to Ambergris Caye. I strongly recommend Banyan Bay and Discovery Expeditions Belize as your one stop shop. This is a vacation experience that you simply can not experience in the US and in neighboring Carribean destinations!

Restaurant recommendations in San Pedro: Feed the tarpon while dining at Sunset Grill!!! The food is great, the owner is a super guy from Las Vegas and the large tarpons jump from the water to take the sardines right out of your hand! We also like Carambas, Elvi's and Fido's (great bar and restaurant with live music).

Other tips: bring over the counter medicine from home for sea sickness just in case! We did and it really helped several in our group who may have become sea sick otherwise. Buy your fresh water and Beliken Beer direct from the distributor in San Pedro to save some money. Also, visit the Sausage Factory for some of the best sausage you will ever eat! The "country sausage" is particularly good as breakfast patties.

After many trips to Belize, my now husband and I decided to have our wedding here. We hired a wedding planner, photog etc. before even picking out our location. After looking at countless photos i fell in love with the pier and gazebo at Banyan Bay. BEST DECISION EVER. If there was a rating above excellent i would give it, the hotel is beautiful and very clean, and really fun. The restaurant is amazing-i read a bunch of negative reviews and im shocked (or really lucky) because everything we ate (and we had 22 people with us for the week) was really good. The staff here is wonderful too-Manuel in the restaurant literally MADE our wedding-which went off without a hitch, i should have hired the hotel and restaurant to plan the whole thing because they gave 100% more effort than my "wedding planner" we had hired a year ago. I could not say more about Banyan Bay-except i cannot wait to come back again.

Just back from 5 nights at Banyan Bay. The grounds are beautiful and well-manicured. The beach is kept clean daily. Staff that were attentive to our needs included Miriam, Lee and Ana who took care of our villa. Our villa was in the H building, right on the beach and close to the pool. The pool was clean and maintained. We enjoyed learning the names of the iguana who visit the pool site regularly. The crowd that was at Banyan Bay during our visit was mature, fun and quiet. Ricos is the restaurant on-site. The staff at Ricos did a wonderful job of relaxing us with humor that was very surprising and fun. They also cooked fish that we caught, 3 different ways. Each was better than the previous! The snorkeling services provided by the on-site dive shop were fine. Other restaurants we would recommend include the one at Victoria House, Caliente, and the Sunset Grill. Make sure you get there to watch the tarpon getting fed.
We had never been to Belize before this trip. It took 3 planes to get there. The trip was absolutely well worth it! Just a gorgeous place to be!!!!

Room Tip: The H building is right on the beach.

We recently returned from 1 week at Banyan Bay. We thoroughly enjoyed our trip. The staff could NOT have been any nicer! Everyone was so friendly and went out of their way for us. We enjoyed talking with each and every one of them. I even requested (at the last minute) an ocean front room, and got it - H6. It was great!

The grounds were beautiful! They were free of trash and clearly well taken care of. The beach was also wonderful, with comfortable lounge chairs and raked of sea grass daily.

We were able to use the internet for free and also to use bikes for free. We biked to dinner almost every night! It was really fun, since that is not something we get to do here in NJ! There were also golf carts available for renting, which wasso convenient! Just around the corner (literally) towards town is a little store called Marina's, which is by far the cheapest grocery store on the island. I think there is a sign out there that says that, which is true! We walked up there a few times during the week to get some groceries to keep in our kitchen (which was well stocked for cooking a few simple meals throughout the week). It worked out really well!

A few small "criticisms" (if you can even call it that). My understanding is that a lot of the rooms are owned by people and rented out through Banyan Bay, so there is a wide variety in furnishings, etc. Our couch wasn't terribly comfortable, but we didn't spend much time in the room, so it wasn't that big of a deal. However, if the weather was bad or we had kids that needed naps, etc., it would have been a little bit more annoying.

Our unit could have used a little bit of maintenence. The tiles/caulking in both bathrooms were beginning to crack and had evidence of "wear and tear". Obviously not a big deal and nothing significant, but worth noting.

The one thing I do have to say I was disappointed with was the balconies. Our room was on the upper level (which I did request, for ocean breezes). Each "house" has 3 rooms upstairs and 2 downstairs. The 3 upstairs balconies were practically adjacent with no privacy whatsoever. We were lucky, since it was offseason, that nobody was upstairs after our first day there. It could have been kind of uncomfortable trying to have a chat out there with 2 other sets of people who could hear anything we said slightly above a whisper. It worked out ok for us, but having some sort of screen or something between the balconies would be greatly appreciated for our next visit.

All in all we had a WONDERFUL stay at this hotel! We are already looking into a return trip!!
