“My Wedding at Banyan Bay”
Reviewed May 17, 2011

After many trips to Belize, my now husband and I decided to have our wedding here. We hired a wedding planner, photog etc. before even picking out our location. After looking at countless photos i fell in love with the pier and gazebo at Banyan Bay. BEST DECISION EVER. If there was a rating above excellent i would give it, the hotel is beautiful and very clean, and really fun. The restaurant is amazing-i read a bunch of negative reviews and im shocked (or really lucky) because everything we ate (and we had 22 people with us for the week) was really good. The staff here is wonderful too-Manuel in the restaurant literally MADE our wedding-which went off without a hitch, i should have hired the hotel and restaurant to plan the whole thing because they gave 100% more effort than my "wedding planner" we had hired a year ago. I could not say more about Banyan Bay-except i cannot wait to come back again.

Just back from 5 nights at Banyan Bay. The grounds are beautiful and well-manicured. The beach is kept clean daily. Staff that were attentive to our needs included Miriam, Lee and Ana who took care of our villa. Our villa was in the H building, right on the beach and close to the pool. The pool was clean and maintained. We enjoyed learning the names of the iguana who visit the pool site regularly. The crowd that was at Banyan Bay during our visit was mature, fun and quiet. Ricos is the restaurant on-site. The staff at Ricos did a wonderful job of relaxing us with humor that was very surprising and fun. They also cooked fish that we caught, 3 different ways. Each was better than the previous! The snorkeling services provided by the on-site dive shop were fine. Other restaurants we would recommend include the one at Victoria House, Caliente, and the Sunset Grill. Make sure you get there to watch the tarpon getting fed.
We had never been to Belize before this trip. It took 3 planes to get there. The trip was absolutely well worth it! Just a gorgeous place to be!!!!

Room Tip: The H building is right on the beach.

We recently returned from 1 week at Banyan Bay. We thoroughly enjoyed our trip. The staff could NOT have been any nicer! Everyone was so friendly and went out of their way for us. We enjoyed talking with each and every one of them. I even requested (at the last minute) an ocean front room, and got it - H6. It was great!

The grounds were beautiful! They were free of trash and clearly well taken care of. The beach was also wonderful, with comfortable lounge chairs and raked of sea grass daily.

We were able to use the internet for free and also to use bikes for free. We biked to dinner almost every night! It was really fun, since that is not something we get to do here in NJ! There were also golf carts available for renting, which wasso convenient! Just around the corner (literally) towards town is a little store called Marina's, which is by far the cheapest grocery store on the island. I think there is a sign out there that says that, which is true! We walked up there a few times during the week to get some groceries to keep in our kitchen (which was well stocked for cooking a few simple meals throughout the week). It worked out really well!

A few small "criticisms" (if you can even call it that). My understanding is that a lot of the rooms are owned by people and rented out through Banyan Bay, so there is a wide variety in furnishings, etc. Our couch wasn't terribly comfortable, but we didn't spend much time in the room, so it wasn't that big of a deal. However, if the weather was bad or we had kids that needed naps, etc., it would have been a little bit more annoying.

Our unit could have used a little bit of maintenence. The tiles/caulking in both bathrooms were beginning to crack and had evidence of "wear and tear". Obviously not a big deal and nothing significant, but worth noting.

The one thing I do have to say I was disappointed with was the balconies. Our room was on the upper level (which I did request, for ocean breezes). Each "house" has 3 rooms upstairs and 2 downstairs. The 3 upstairs balconies were practically adjacent with no privacy whatsoever. We were lucky, since it was offseason, that nobody was upstairs after our first day there. It could have been kind of uncomfortable trying to have a chat out there with 2 other sets of people who could hear anything we said slightly above a whisper. It worked out ok for us, but having some sort of screen or something between the balconies would be greatly appreciated for our next visit.

All in all we had a WONDERFUL stay at this hotel! We are already looking into a return trip!!

Our pleasure with the Banyan Villas started with the free pick up at the airport and an upgrade to the beach front unit by the charming front desk staff. The resort has eight 2-story buildings with beautiful teal tiled roofs around the very inviting crystalline pool. Every one of the freshly painted 48 units has a front porch and a back porch surrounded by excellently maintained shubbery and palm trees. Everywhere you look there is no doubt that you are in the Caribbean.
The 2 bedroom/2 bath unit was spacious, comfortable and everything worked well. We had complete maid service and fluffly clean towels every day. All the staff aim to please and are sincerely happy to be part of the hotel community. The maintenance staff worked continuosly to remove the sea grass on the beach which is an ubiquitous problem with the entire Belizian key area. The overly abundant sea grass was the only issue I had with the vacation since it made beach swimming a bit icky no matter where you went.
Ricco's had good food, especially their Belizian breakfast with jack fries (not to be missed). Their quesadillas also hit the spot. We enjoyed one 3 hour snorkel trip with the dive shop but the manager was unable to organize a whole day trip for us. We used the Monkey Business travel agency at the close by Banana Beach resort for all our great subsequent tours. Do not miss the Seaduction all day Catamaran snorkel trip to Shark Alley and Key Caulker! I also recommend the Il Divino restaurant (also at Banana Beach) for outstanding filet mignon, martinis and ceviches, which are pretty much a staple in Belize and not to be missed.
It is not worth it to rent a golf cart - you are better off walking into town on the beach for dinner(about 30 minutes) and taking the US$5 cab ride back to the hotel. The hotel spa was grossly overpriced - the peducure was very inferior. There is a Day spa close by with competitive prices.

Room Tip: All rooms good but beach front excellent

My wife and 2 daughters came sight unseen to Banyan Bay. Our goals were to certify our daughters in scuba and to make as many dives to create a lifetime sport for them. We also wanted to enjoy some down time and take in all that Belize has/had to offer. Simply said, all goals were achieved and exceeded!

Rico's Restaurant has good/great food. Priced fairly, and we never sent a plate back without licking it clean. The staff were friendly, and many became friends by the end of the week.

Bottom Time dive shop is 20-30 paces away. Excellent service, competitively priced and all equipment was in good shape. The staff again out did themselves and the divemasters we had were excellent and patient with our daughters getting their initial diving certification. Greisy (pronounced Gracy) scheduled us for every whim we presented her with for diving and also arranged for all of us to go para-sailing the day we departed (this was a fantastic way for us to end a pleasant week and a ton of fun to boot, worth every penny!)

Every other member of the Banyan Bay staff was outstanding. Friendly, warm and caring. This is inclusive from the first moment you arrive, (Albert) the front desk staff, the maids, and even the gardeners (we were walking from an outing back to our rooms and the gardeners were doing some coconut maintenance and invited us to try some fresh coconuts. They cut and dressed one for each us to try the milk and then explained how to eat the meat. It was an awesome time and fun to try.)

Finally, if you are able to get an ocean view room, it is worth whatever it takes to get one. Not that the poolside rooms are bad, but you are literally 20 feet from the ocean and the view is breathtaking. The units are large and comfortable. 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms, for the four of us were more than adequate. There is a large living room area that also has a futon for additional sleeping. There is a kitchen that has full size refrigerator, stove and microwave and we prepared several meals during the week with good results.

Everyone we met was above and beyond friendly! We had a very nice 2 bedroom condo. The front desk staff was incredibly helpful. We had to make changes to some arrangements and the women at the front desk did it all for us. The pool and grounds were gorgeous! Restaurant staff was wonderful. We recommend not renting a golf cart for the week (like we had planned) but just getting a couple of bicycles from the front desk (which are free!) and traveling on the island that way-which we loved!

The service was excellent. Food at Rico's was consistently excellent. The rooms are spacious and very clean. We stayed in a beachfront room after we were initially put in a corner room by the lobby and requested to change. Wonderful staff and very accomodating. We would stay there again.
