“Really Great Place To Stay”
Reviewed May 11, 2012

Initially I found this location thru VRBO but contacted them directly.. Julie made getting our reservation a breeze. The place is fun, very nice and relaxing.. We rented a 1/1. Our unit was very comfortable, great patio view to enjoy morning coffee or happy hour drinks, and the kitchen had everything you could ask for. We made breakfast every morning then enjoyed lunch and dinner out.. You won't find a nicer staff! The pool bar is the only restaurant but they do a great job.. Security everywhere you look and friendly.. when we booked a tour outside the hotel, they made sure to have all the information just in case.. The only thing (which isn't the hotel's fault!) the road to the hotel is a bit bumpy.. Beware those that have back problems! Overall a fabulous place to experience Ambergris Caye.. Thanks to all there

We went all our way from Germany to Belize (two days traveling) and found a place that is much better and nicer than all pics and videos we saw in the Internet. Our apartment was simply fantastic with all kind of comfort, clean and plenty of space. The Resort was the best we have ever experienced. Reception ( Roxanne, Maria...), Pools (three!), beach, safety (24/7, thank you Sixto, Marco, Muhammed and all others), service (apartment was cleaned every day, laundry done whenever needed)....everything 5 stars. Not to forget, Cowboy Doug`s Pool Bar! Doug is a fantastic guy that made our stay a very special one. He is simply unique ! Also, his staff is the most kind, sympathetic, and relax team you can find: thank you Toa, Deli, Josue, Freddy, Andrew and all others... The reception took care of all kind of services like pic up from the airport San Pedro, flight reservations, trips to Maya Pyramids, Diving, Sailing, Bicycles, Kayak.... (Thanks Jennifer!) Overall, three weeks of Paradise with the nicest people you can find and the most spectacular water and weather.....what can I say: if had 10 stars, I would give 10 stars!! Thank you Gran Caribe, San Pedro, Belize! We´ll come back!

Our honeymoon was in Belize and after a lot of reserach we chose Grand Caribe and we could not have been happier! Our room was amazing--stainless steel appliances in the kitchen (which we only used to make rum punches), nice eating area & couches inside, and a nice table on the patio which was great when we didn't want to be out in the sun. The AC was so nice to come into after long days in the heat, and made sleeping very relaxing. We stayed in D-8 and had the perfect view of the pools, the beach and the ocean.

Grand Caribe definitely has the nicest pools in San Pedro-- there are three there that you can choose from, and it wasn't crowded at all when we were there. I saw another review here that says this isn't for couples, and while it isn't a 'couples resort' my husband and I had an amazing time and were never interrupted by other people when we wanted some quiet time.

We arranged an in-room couples massage for the first few days and that was really relaxing and a nice indulgence. We also arranged to go snorkeling to the Blue Hole on a full day trip through the concierge--not their fault but this was not worth the money! If you go, just go snorkeling to Hol Chan Marine Reserve & Shark Ray Alley. Blue Hole is perfect for divers, and not great for snorkelers (although we thought it was great when we were there).

To get to town we took the water taxi - $5US each way (per person). The roads are pretty terrible so we didn't want to waste the $70US to rent a golf cart or however much to rent bikes. Honestly there isn't much to see in San Pedro, and were able to have dinner nearby the resort without needing more than our two feet!

HIGHLY recommended-- much cheaper than other resorts and you get more for your money!

Just spent 7 nights here and have nothing but positive things to say about every detail. We stayed in 2 different rooms (by choice) so my perspective is from Building C and H.

First, planning the trip was a breeze. Julie at the Resort was like a private vacation planner handling every detail. Anything she did not cover she handed over seemlessly to the Concierge who arranged for each and every trip.

Location wise it could not have been at a better spot on the island. It was one of the closest resorts to the bridge which takes you into San Pedro which made for a convenient location traveling by golf cart. The resort also had a pier where you could take a water taxi right into town as well. Being on the "resort" side of the island was also a nice way to get away from the madness and enjoy tranquility. You could easily walk to other resorts and restaurants and have a drink, lunch or dinner.

Room wise we stayed in a 3 bedroom penthouse in both building C and H.

Building C was Ocean view and the views were great. We were in C9. Due to the layout if you like to see the sun rise it was a bit difficult from this unit as it did not face East, but regardless the views of the Ocean and Pool area were great. Even better than the view was the room itself. Wow. The units are privately owned so you are somewhat stuck with the taste of the owner, and this owner had very good taste. If you desire a sunrise view from your balcony I would think Building F or G would get you that but i am not sure the Ocean views would be as good as C.

Building H was Ocean Front. The views were amazing but the unit itself (H9) was actually not as well appointed as C9. The owner had put some cheap flooring in the upstairs Master which was coming up due to the weather in this area. Really nothing more than a bad decision. Other than that, the unit was very, very nice. The view was directly out over the ocean with no obstruction. It also provided some degree of privacy.

The pools and hot tubs were also extremely nice. The swim up bar was a nice touch which also provided some shade which was needed at times. It was very hot. I thought the food at Cowboy Dougs was actually very good as well. I had about 4 different breakfasts there and all were excellent. The Salsa is great. We did not eat dinner at the Resort but did have a couple of lunches which were also good.

We went during the dry season and there were almost no bugs. I did not even use the spray we brought the entire week.

Overall this is a great place whether you are there with adults or bring kids. We left ours at home but the reosrt was well designed for kids. The staff was constantly cleaning and maintaining every detail. Further, the staff was very responsive to our every need and extra helpful. Would like to stay here again, and again.

Room Tip: Take a look at the room views as they are pretty accurate. Also, I think Building A is the best Oce...

Overall this resort was a disappointment.  On positive notes the grounds are immaculate.  The front desk and activities staff are very nice as are the restaurant staff.  The restaurant food is good and priced right.  No extra charge for room service was a nice change.  The negatives outweigh the positives though.  This is the first negative resort review I have ever written and I am doing so in hopes that others will not be as disappointed as we were.  Firstly, this is by no means a couples/romantic resort.  It is packed with families with young children.  The little ones are screaming and crying all day long.  The teens are jumping and splashing in all the pools at once.  A fundamental problem with the resort is the building layout. Yes, all rooms get an ocean view but the "C" shape layout creates an echo chamber that sends every scream right up to your balcony.  I have posted videos to YouTube so you can experience this.  There are also only about six trees in the center of the buildings so the sound just bounces from one building to the next.  Its not a small issue.  The noise is relentless.  You can hear conversations 100 yards away.  Every time we went to a vacant pool the kids moved right in on us.  They gravitate towards the two side pools because they are deep and better for jumping as opposed to Ithe shallow center pool.  I asked management why a resort with four pools did not designate one as a "quiet/adult pool" and why the most private pool had no chairs or umbrellas near it.  This is the response I got. "We will be placing a small set of chairs on the north pool. This is supposed to be an adult only pool, however since we haven't put up signs as yet  indicating this (this is a new pool to our complex, only having been completed earlier this year), so in order to keep out both large groups and families we haven't placed anything there as yet. However, due to this, we will go ahead and place two lounge chairs for you to relax.". Not placing chairs keeps families and groups away?? Doesn't this also keep adult couples away??  No sign put up yet because the pool is new?? C'mon.  We were at least glad they placed chairs for us, two to be exact.  A family with children was quick to seize them even thought there was not enough chairs for them.  They just threw towels on the pool deck.  We tried to hide at the beach but the sea grass so typical to the area doesn't make for a pleasant ocean swim.  If you go past the dock a boat will decapitate you with extreme prejudice.  The other major issue is the room and maid staff.  By 8 AM max you are awoken by doors being slammed so repetitively that sleep is no longer an option.  The first day I threw the blanket back on the bed and the maids interpreted this as me making the bed and neglected it.  Towels were left exactly as I had left them.  No refold/replace, nothing.  This went on for days until I complained.  The tub jets didn't work but were repaired on request.  The shower drain is bent and has a sharp edge.  Not repaired, still like that when we left.  The kitchen is wonderfully stocked with first grade appliances yet all we really wanted was a 2Ooz. pool friendly cup to brink drinks downstairs.  I asked but this was the reply, " We as a resort, provide glassware.".  It's true, there were glass champagne flutes, wine glasses and 4 oz. juice glasses.  Nothing to drink water out of and nothing for the pool area.  No bar soap was provided at all until asked for.  You cannot use the washer/dryer because they insist on doing your laundry for you.  Which translates to all your clothes being washed on the same settings and being over dried on max heat for max time so the maid doesn't have to monitor the laundry.  By 5:30 one night it still wasn't complete and the maids come back and forth to your room when your there so they can get into the dryer.  Are you kidding me?  Just give people detergent so they can properly do there own laundry, at least the people who ask.  the maids don't wipe down the kitchen surfaces or balcony table.  The floors felt gritty and dirty the whole stay.  I wore socks one night to keep the grit off my feet and they turned black.  There is no mat next to the bed so the grit just follows you into the sheets.  So gross.  The lighting, at least in unit F8 is terrible.  All high wattage recessed lighting with no dimmers.  We had to use the ambient light from adjacent rooms instead of direct lighting because it was unbearably bright.  There was only one table lamp (in the br) but it had a 150 watt bulb so I threw colored T-shirts over it to subdue the harshness.  We ran out of facial tissue that was in a decorative tissue box holder and asked the maid for more.  She said "We don't provide that".  Really? You provide a decorative holder but I was supposed to bring my own box of tissues?  I reported this to management and got a new story, " We did run out of the facial tissue and unfortunately being so isolated we must import these items and they are on back order. Its the busiest time of year (second to Christmas) and unfortunately some items get left out due to this.". Wow, what happens when they run out of toilet paper being so isolated and all?  But then the "Great Tissue Shortage of 2012"suddenly ended and they appeared in my bathroom.  What luck!  On our last day I had our bags brought to the lobby and it was our intention to have breakfast and return to the room to get our valuables and wash up before checking out at 11.  While we were having breakfast our waitress said the front desk had just called her and informed her that we left belongings in our room.  I said "of course there are things in our room, we have not checked out yet.". After breakfast we went to retrieve our things and freshen up and found the aids had entered the room early and sent all of our things to the front desk prior to checkout time. WTF!?!?  Overall the responses I got from management were patronizing at best dismissive at worst.  There was no response to the last message I sent to the resort about my checkout so any subtle attempts to counter this review on this site should only be perceived as an attempt to save face with future customers not an attempt to satisfy me.
The resort is far from town which is good because downtown is grungy (like the floors in our room) but bad because a bike ride to town on that road is rough and a golf cart costs as much a renting a Cadillac in New York.  The water taxi is often overloaded and bumpy as hell.  The Palapa bar was loaded with all he kids from our resort all sitting at the bar with us.  Ahi was close and pretty good.  The Lazy Croc is closed or out of business.  So this limits you being so far from town.

Room Tip: All rooms have a view but you get an earful from the kids at the pools

I am happy to hear that you believed our maintenance and frontline personnel were nice and that the restaurant was to your approval.

We regret that your stay with us was not as you expected. Our aim at all times is to provide quality stay with great service.

Your stay with us was at a time that most people are able to travel as a family, having been Easter break (Spring break), we had many families at Grand Caribe. We cater very well to families and are proud to be and could tell that they had a wonderful time at Grand Caribe. Your YouTube video in our opinion highlights their enjoyment. Our C shape and lack of obstructions such as coconut trees, allows for ocean views with views of the grounds and pools; however, for a more private experience ocean front condos face the ocean and only have views of the Caribbean Sea, pier and beach. I regret that our intent to create a private pool space for you and other couples did not work, since the lack of signs created the same situation that you faced at the other pools.

In regards to the seagrass, the Great Barrier Reef is a living organism that attracts tourism to our country, and is only about 500yards away from our shoreline, breaking the waves that would otherwise maintain a high surf and limit sea life...such is the case in Cancun. We on a yearly basis clear some of the seagrass away to allow for a more pleasant beach experience, but sea life quickly grows back in the shallow calm water. We are aware of the boat traffic and have placed signage for the safety of guests, however we have numerous steps along the side of the pier for swimming as well as cleared areas of sea grass for this purpose.

We regret that the housekeeping service was not to your standard; we did take your complaints seriously, to the extent that we went out and personally bought a box of facial tissue from a local store to place in your condo. Your sarcastic comment only shines a light on the extent in which we tried to satisfy your needs. The housekeeping supervisor was sure to access the situation and do the appropriate changes to clean at a satisfactory level, we can assure that the condo was swept and mopped daily; however with the opening of a door or walking through with shoes, sand and salt are bound to get in.

Our condo’s are privately owned and decorated. We have certain standard items such as glassware that we require to be in the rental program; however, it is left to the personal taste of the owner of the condo to decide on how best they intend to decorate and furnish the condo. We can make suggestions based on guests’ comments, and I will be sure to pass along your concerns and will urge that we see about changing the lighting scheme. And in addition, we have signage in every unit imploring to the guests that they do not remove the items from the unit with the exception of beach towels, because of the fact that these are personally owned condos.

In regards to your departure, we sincerely apologize. Miscommunication on our part simply added salt to your wounded stay and should never have happened. There is no excuse for this and once again we apologize.

On a final note, Ambergris Caye and San Pedro Town have a heartbeat and vibe all its own, Caribbean relaxation with a Latin American flair. We are proud of what used to be a small fishing village and is now becoming a recognized tourism destination. We only hope that our guests can enjoy the pulse and the personality of the country and see the beauty of what is the culture of our small Belize.

We flew into Belize City Intl Airport and walked over to Tropic Air. There were nine of us, 5 adults and 4 children ages 3, 5, 8 and 10. We took a small plane over to San Pedro on Ambergris Caye and the resort paid for our taxi from San Pedro to the resort about 2 miles to the north of town. The resort is beautiful, new, has wonderful pools and a long dock to fish from. The kids enjoyed every minute, learned to find their way around the pools, restaurant, dock and back to their condo. We fished from the dock every day and ate fresh caught fish three nites of our trip. Also, the men took kayaks out to the reef and dove up some fresh conch. We were able to book whatever tours we wanted right from the concierge and took a snorkeling trip, a half day fishing trip and one of us took a trip to the Mayan ruins. You can either take a taxi or a golf cart into town. You need to be prepared for high food prices compared to home and the restaurant prices are pretty similar to the US. Our unit was beautiful. Kitchen had granite counters, wood cabinets, stainless appliances and was fully equipped with anything you might need to prepare food. The floors were tile, bathrooms were beautiful and the furniture was all new. Also, there was wi-fi which was fast and reliable. The staff was wonderful and friendly. I would highly recommend this resort to anyone with a family or just a couple. The view of the ocean was amazing from almost any unit in the resort. The beach wasn't the best for swimming but the kids did swim and snorkel off the dock and spent most of their other swim time in the pool. also, the weather channel said it was 88 and felt like 98 in Belize but there was a constant breeze off the ocean and it never really felt uncomfortable. We even turned off the air and opened the windows and doors in the evening.

Room Tip: There are no elavators so I would suggest first or second floor units unless you don't mind clim...
