Accommodation: Casa Buena Vista is in a great location, approximately 15 minutes to San Pedro town. You will definitely need a golf cart if you stay here. The walk into town would likely be approximately 1.5+ hours. We walked as far as Pier 366 and it was approximately 35 minutes - this is about half way to town. Most of the walk is on a sea wall interspersed with stretches of beach - the beaches can be rocky in places and there is a lot of seaweed and some garbage around. We only walked this stretch in the day time - at night, much of the area would be in darkness.
The accommodation at Casa Buena Vista is pretty much as described and depicted in the photos. The property is beginning to show some wear and tear and some amenities are simply not available and/or broken e.g. blinds in the living room and reading lights in one bedroom don't work, water chairs broken, no hammock or sun bed. The configuration in the living room is exactly like the photos on the web site and is more suited to two versus four. During the evenings (after about 5pm) you can't sit outside - the mosquitoes and sand flies are abundant and bug spray really did not work. When we were dining at the Casa, we compromised by eating our main meal outside at lunch, and then bringing in a couple of patio chairs every evening so we all had a place to sit (there were four of us). The kitchen is adequately equipped, but could use some organization and check on supplies before each rental. For example: the can openers were rusted and non-operational, there were insufficient glasses for four people (three wine glasses). We ended up purchasing extra wine and high-ball glasses (Note: this was our choice, I am sure the Owner would have dealt with it, we just didn't want to complain about everything).
The Owner (Wolfgang) did check in with us daily, and the few issues that arose during our one month stay were handled promptly. He also provided a lot of information on where to shop and eat that was very helpful. Eldin, who is on the premises daily, took care of most of our other needs and was most accommodating. He arranged to order fresh fish for us, and helped with ferry tickets, etc. Cleaning and laundry service (change of sheets/towels and personal laundry) was provided twice weekly. The cleaning staff, Lorena and her daughter-in-law, were excellent.
Things to do: Make sure to visit Caye Caulker ... a short ferry ride away, and snorkelling and diving on the reef for sure. San Pedro is a great town to walk and explore.
Pupuseria - in town, a must for a local experience. Try the lobster burrito (big enough for two to share), the shrimp tostadas and of course the pupusas (hint: you put the coleslaw on top of the pupusa - which can best be described as a pancake stuffed with shrimp, lobster or conch - spoon on some sauce and then eat ... delicious!)
Caliente - on the beach, everything we ate here was excellent, particularly the blackened lobster burger and the coconut curry.
Blue Water Grill - on the beach, try the conch fritters, conch chowder, lobster po-boy, fish sandwich and the rice noodle bowl
Robins Kitchen - shack on the side of the road going in to town - great BBQ chicken
Pier 366 at the Banyan Bay Hotel - great food and atmosphere
Truck Stop - over the bridge in the North part of the island - your choice of food from various food trucks
Mesa - in town - great breakfast
Palapa - built at the end of a pier over the water, great for beer and snacks
Lone Star - 5 minutes from Casa Buena Vista (closest place) ... great conch fritters, burgers, fish and chips
The Baker - on the way into town - great freshly baked bread, sandwiches, cinnamon buns
Crazy Canucks - bar on the beach, great for beer and snacks
Overall our stay in San Pedro was awesome, mostly because the people are so friendly. They do not hassle you and are all very helpful.
We have indicated "no" to recommending this rental only because satisfaction would be entirely dependent on expectations, and we were somewhat disappointed overall. This would be a phenomenal rental if it was better maintained.
Wolfgang, and his staff; Eldon and Mirta were so helpful, and took care of everything we needed during our stay. Eldon helped a lot with getting around the island and Mirta was an amazing babysitter for our 7 month old while we went on a tour. We loved the layout of the house; comfy space with enough privacy for our teenage daughter to have her own room/bathroom. Beautiful beach out back; spent a lot of time swimming and playing with the provided floating lounge chairs and snorkeling masks.
We stayed in the front Casa with the deck and that was beautiful . What a view to have while sitting on your deck . This is a great place to stay if u are looking to relax. Very clean accommodations . The air conditioning was great to have, us being Canadian , the heat and humidity took us a few days to adapt...lol. Eldon and Merta were there for all your needs. I asked for feather pillows , I got feather pillows. She was awesome. Wolfgang was very helpful at getting our cart ,and our flight from the mainland booked, He also recommended many good restaurants and tours that we enjoyed thoroughly. Quite private and not a lot a beach traffic. If ya love dogs , Cookie is there for all your petting needs. He is so well behaved and if u don't want him around , just ask him to go lay down and he gives you your space. He loves going on walks. We enjoyed his company !!. The one thing I would suggest, is maybe getting a corn hole game , just to give some one, something to do on those days , when ya just feel like hanging around and want to take in the view and sun. We played this game at Secret beach and really enjoyed ourselves. The bugs weren't bad at all , except for in the evening We were in the front Casa , where there was a breeze and that helped a lot. Bring bug spray , just in case.
I know this property has had many reviews and after staying here, all are very accurate. Our terrace was literally steps from the ocean. If you are an early riser, the sunrises are beautiful. Wolfgang and his staff, Eldon and Merta were wonderful in answering questions and assisting in any way. Because we wanted the exercise, we opted to rent bikes for the week ($42.00 per bike from Chill and Cruise). We got excellent beach cruiser style bikes and went all over the island - even to the secret beach! It is not that hard to bike since it is very flat. Plus cars are at a minimum and golf carts are not as much of a threat on the road. The local grocery store is just steps from the villa and the deli next store has excellent breakfasts and lunches (Belizian Style). Also, not too far is great Belizian and Jamacian food at Robin's Kitchen which has excellent food and fun people running it. We really enjoyed this end of the island - very peaceful and quiet but not too far from town. This villa has been updated with incredible bathrooms and showers. Also, the kitchen was very nice and had all amenities. There is a dock next door (public) where tours picked us up and dropped us off - scuba diving and catamaran sail - which was very convenient. Last but not least, if you love and miss your dog at home, resident dog Cookie will fill in. He is a great, old dog with lots of love to share. We can't wait to return to this wonderful place soon.
I am a corporate meeting and event planner for a large corporation in the US who has traveled the world and stay at top tier hotels. But when I am on vacation, this is what I want!
Wolfgang and his staff are very accommodating. It was a perfect place to stay and enjoy the best Ambergris Caye as to offer.
It was my parents first time to Belize and my Mom has limited mobility so this was an ideal choice for her. Not easy when a majority of the place have several stairs even for the lower levels.
I would highly recommend staying here to anyone.
No complaints. It was great to see the sun rise and set on the beach. The accommodations were perfect for my family. The two bathrooms and 3 showers definitely came in handy. You will need a golf cart if you want to explore the island but there is small store within walking distance for food and drinks. And beware, the roads can get bumpy. Wolfgang was great about providing us with plenty of information before our arrival and making the arrangements for our golf cart. His staff,Eldon & Mirta, were also very great and took excellent care of us. They helped in every way possible from arranging for taxis or tours to recommendations on food and sightseeing and even laundry. I would definitely return. I do recommend bringing bug/mosquito repellant to the islands and using it. We brought plenty and it helped to keep the bugs away.
My husband and sister traveled to San Pedro in October. Wolfgang, Eldon and Marta made us very welcome.
Wolfgang the owner of the Villa is a real gentleman and is very unobtrusive but accessible and willing to help out with questions or recommendations, he is also very attentive to answering any questions or helping to make local travel arrangements before you ever land in San Pedro . Eldon and Marta who work there who maintain the property were genuinely lovely people, again ready and willing to help, if needed.
Of course there is the adorable and smart beach dog called Cookie, who will be your companion during your stay but only if you would like that, he reads people very well, and will keep his distance if having a holiday dog is not your cup of tea. So many great things we could say about staying here, we felt like we could truly relax and not worry about anything at Casa Buena Vista.
