We were invited to this marvellous resort, unfortunately it was only for 1 night/2 days. At arrival we were welcomed very warmly by the ladies of the frontdesk. Doing the formalities while sipping a welcome cocktail was a new experience, hope I made no mistakes :-)

We got a tour through the resort and our room...in fact a suite with 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms! Bathrooms that are fully equipped including a whirlpool. Oh yes...and a bed with rose hips on top.

The resort is on the water, has sea view and great pools. We had lunch the next day and that was also very nice.

All in all a great experience that was way too short...we will return soon!

Room tip: All rooms are great as I could see. Make sure you do not miss out on the daily happy hour!

This review is for the Phoenix Hotel but not the town of San Pedro although it is difficult to separate the two.

The Phoenix Hotel is a 30 unit condo/hotel located in the town. It’s within walking distance of everything. We stayed in a 3 bedroom 2 bath unit which faced the water. The unit was about 1800 square feet and had everything you would expect of a $600/night unit. It had 4 flat screen TV’s, CD players, and a fully equipped kitchen. It
was absolutely spotless. The housekeeping staff came by twice a day and kept it
spotless.

My daughter used the gym and said everything was working and that during each visit there was always a staff member there cleaning up the place.

The resort has two or three pools (depending on how you look at it). They were kept very clean. There were always lounge chairs available as well as fresh clean towels.

In addition to the excellent facilities, there is the staff. The pool bar was always manned with friendly people. The maintenance and landscape people always had a smile and talked to you as you walked around. The restaurant made me a quick breakfast ½ hour before they opened so I could make a fishing trip on time.
However, the “crown jewel” of the resort are the ladies at the front desk. I do not want to mention names as all were excellent and I do not want to forget anyone. We booked all our tours through them. All my numerous changes and reschedulings were met with a smile. Every event was done exactly correct. We had a cave tubing canceled at 6:30 AM ( due to flooding) as we were heading out the door to the airport. Our friends were already at the airport and checked in. The early person at the front desk was able to reschedule the 5 of us, as well as contact our friends at the airport and get their tickets reissued as well. All was done with a smile. Their service level was the best I have experienced anywhere.
Yes, there is no swimming beach, but they clearly tell you that. There are piers to swim off a few hundred feet away. You can take your golf carts to numerous beautiful beaches.
Yes, San Pedro is a third world town with many, many bars, restaurants and tee shirt stores. We are in our late 60’s and HBN ( horizontal by nine) so we did not take advantage of the bars. However the people are very friendly, the food is good and the prices are cheap. If we were 40 years younger we probably would have enjoyed San Pedro more. Even at our age we really enjoyed swimming with the sharks, fishing the reefs and mangroves and the visits to the ruins and cave tubing.

If you do decide to visit San Pedro, regardless of your age, The Phoenix is the place to stay

We stayed at the Phoenix for 4 nights during our honeymoon. The service was of a very high standing. Staff went out of their way to make our stay a pleasant one, even decorating the room and offering us a free bottle of wine to welcome us. Our suite was amazing, with two bedrooms - both of which were spotless and nicely decorated, two great bathrooms , and a living room/kitchen. We felt completely at home and didn't want to leave. We had a huge balcony with a nice view onto the swimming pool and the sea. They organised lots of activities for us, and we were never disppointed. Food at their restaurant was also very good, as were their cocktails - and there again, service was great. We can only recommend the Phoenix.

Sorry to go against the grain here

But Ambergris and the Phoenix were really underwhelming!

The Scuba diving is awesome. If you are not a diver, there's just so many other beach destinations better than Ambergris Caye.

Unless you are totally set on Belize, you won't miss much if you skip this destination (or just make it a short stop on the way to other places)

Here's a breakdown

Rooms - Clean and spacious. There were some ants. Recommend beachfront.

Service - friendly, no complaints

Beach - awful. Smells and there is no real beach. True that they don't claim to have a real beach. But it stinks while walking along it. Don't expect much, it's there just for the view.
There was also loud construction noise from a neighboring property while sitting outside.

Pool area - No hot tub. Uncomfortable chairs. Large pools. There was also loud construction noise from a neighboring property while sitting outside.

Gym - awful. 2 treadmills - one didn't work at all and the other one kept emergency stopping. Bikes were broken. Not sure if the floor is ever cleaned.

Restaurant - very good. Also with room service offered.

Value - poor. Don't need to spend $400+ a night on this beach. Not worth going for luxury in a place like this. It's not a luxury destination.

Overall impression - Average destination and resort unless diving the Blue Hole.

We cannot recommend the Phoenix Resort highly enough. The initial recommendation came from long-lost family members who live on the mainland so we were grateful of their local expertise. The resort has everything you could require and the rooms (especially with a pool and/or ocean view) were really extremely well furnished condominiums. The food was excellent and extremely good value both in the hotel and in the local village which is located literally outside the entrance to the hotel. The trips were well organised by the very efficient and super-friendly front desk team. If you're a diver don't miss the Blue Hole 3-tank day trip and if just snorkeling the Shark Ray Alley day trip to Caye Caulker is a wonderful experience. If you have time for a trip to the mainland then the jungle river trip to the Maya temples at Lamanai is a great day out. Belize doesn't yet have the sophistication of Cancun but we preferred it for its all-round value for money, authenticity and friendliness. Thanks to all at The Phoenix for a truly memorable stay - we''ll be back !!

Room tip: I think all are superb but go for an Ocean View
