“Loved Las Terrazas”
Reviewed May 9, 2012

The property is beautiful and staff is wonderful. Sully is very sweet and professional at the front desk.

The Snorkel trip we took was awesome. We dutifully followed the guide Manuel (I hope I'm remembering his name correctly) at first b/c we didn't want to get lost. We were thrilled when he was pointing out fish and turtles. We had no idea what we were looking at.

Our romantic meal for our 33rd anniversary was awesome. Nigel was a excellent waiter to us.

My spa treatment was the Mayan Princess. While I could not have the bath because the therapist was pregnant. I found it relaxing and helpful. I recommended it to the other woman on snorkeling cruise with me.

The only bummer was my hubby's half day reef fishing trip with Clementine. It was only two hours long.

Manuel at the front desk recommended several good restaurants in San Pedro. El Fogon was my favorite. It is a place that had truly authentic food. I loved it.

We stayed at Las Terrazas for 8 days and had a fantastic time! The grounds are more beautiful than the pictures convey and we spent a couple days just lounging by the gorgeous pool and reading on the breezy beach.

ROOMS: Our room (Veranda) was great - kitchen clean and well stocked, nice to have a washer/dryer, big comfy bed, good A/C, and good (but not fancy) bathrooms. There is a slight odor to the water, but it's barely noticeable, and come on - this is an island in Belize. If your water needs to be void of all odors then try some place less remote.

STAFF: Awesome! Amazing! Friendly! Accommodating! More than happy to lend a hand with any request: from Hobie Cat lessons to fishing recommendations to special drinks - all we had to do was ask! The wait staff and bartenders at "O" were the best - so kind and just good people. Chef Alex is truly a gem :)

FOOD: We ate at "O" quite a bit and were never disappointed. Our favorites included: Gran"O"la, Fried Jacks, Red Snapper dinners, Butter Chicken (amazing!!), and the Pizza - when we needed a break from fish. Chex Alex offers nightly cooking lessons, but unfortunately, we never had time to schedule this. Next trip!

In San Pedro we ate at Caramba (local options and fajitas, burritos, etc.), Wild Mangos (upscale), Fidos (Americanized bar), and north of San Pedro at the Palapa Bar (over the water). We were happy with all our meals and would recommend any of these places. The Palapa bar is a must visit – just a couple mile bike ride down the beach.

GROCERIES: We took a bike ride up the beach to Mata Grande Grocery and found imported items (potato chips, crackers) to be very expensive, but if you stuck to local brands, the prices were fine. We recommend the pineapple squash (really just concentrated pineapple juice) for making some tropical drinks back in your room. As far as alcohol, we bought it all at the duty-free shop in the airport.

SNORKELING: We rented snorkel gear from the dive shop next door and kayaked out to the reef – it took us about 20 minutes to get out there. Buoys are available to tie your kayak off to and motor boats cannot extend into the buoyed area so no worries there. We saw lots of fish just in this section of the reef! Through the front desk we booked a catamaran to Caye Caulker and snorkeled at Hol Chan and Shark Ray Alley along the way – great trip and snorkeling these areas is a must!

FISHING: My husband booked a flats fishing trip through Tres Pescos (I think) in San Pedro and had great success catching 8 bonefish in half a day! We also saw permit from the resort dock, but they weren't biting. Another couple we ran into caught 3 very large tarpon during their stay - suffice to say, the fishing is great!

TRANSPORTATION: The water taxi (Coastal Express) is the fastest way to get to San Pedro and it runs by the resort every hour or so. It is reliable, fast and safe and the fare is $7 one-way. We also used the resort bikes (check them out before riding though as the salty air takes a toll on metal parts) to explore the coast line and took rides out on the main road. We always felt completely safe. Once a bike broke and we had to walk it back and numerous locals along the road asked if we needed help - good people.

MONEY: Every place we visited took major credit cards and U,.S. dollars.

SPA: The only spa service I had was a pedicure, but it was probably the best and most detailed pedicure I've ever had in my life. The spa itself is calming and lovely.

RESORT VIBE: Tranquil and Classy. This is not a big party resort with loud music and tons of planned activities. It is quiet and secluded, but still offers all the comforts of home and more. We appreciated the tranquility in contrast to our hectic work lives. If you want to party, head into San Pedro where there is a good nightlife scene. You can also walk down the beach to the Captain Morgan Resort (15 minute walk) where there is a livelier party atmosphere. We already miss gazing out across the beautiful curved dock, and into the turquoise yonder. We can't wait to go back!

After a lot of research my now husband I made the decision to get married at Las Terrazas. Let me just say that the entire experience was one I will remember forever! From Carolyn the wedding coordinator to Chef Alex, Noreen our waitress to Curl at the front desk everyone was absolutely outstanding. It was not only the most enjoyable vacation we have ever been on but also the least stressful wedding I have experienced and I was the bride this time! I can't thank them all enough for all of their hard work and great attitudes that made our week there very special. Anyone considering doing a destination wedding should get married at Las Terrazas. There was not a single thing I would have changed about the entire trip. Thank you Noreen and Alex for putting up with our crazy families and being so accommodating to our every request. Words can't describe how great our time here was! Thank you!!!

We stayed at this resort for our first five days of our vacation. We wanted to stay somewhere close to a certified PADI Dive Shop so we could go diving every day. This resort was the perfect place. There was an excellent diving shop literally next door so it was great. We had a third floor (roof top) one bedroom penthouse suite which is actually a three bedroom condo they just lock the doors not in use. In our case they left one of the other bedroom doors unlocked so we ended up with a two bedroom which was great as we used the second bedroom to store our diving gear. The room was very clean, breezy and comfortable. We had a plunge pool out on our balcony which we really enjoyed using in the morning as it heats up fast as soon as the sun's up. We had a full kitchen, however we chose not to stock it with food given the high grocery prices on the island however (Cost saving tip) we did buy liquor at the airport and had the driver stop for mix in town. For meals we ate at the resort restaurant "O" which was fantastic and a few other near by restaurants which were also very good. We discovered that our resort was most definitely one of the more upscale choices for dining. All the staff were friendly and helpful. Our package came with a romatic dinner which the staff set up on a rooftop balcony above the restaurant overlooking the pool one evening. That was a very nice extra touch. There is a great water taxi program which can get you from this resort to others on the island which is great if you want to check out other resorts for dinner as it should be noted that this resort is on the side of the island that is much less populated then the San Pedro side. (which we thought was an extra bonus). Based on our thorough walk about the island, I would highly recommend Las Terrazas as being the best hotel choice on the island without a doubt.

Room Tip: Penhouse suite has a plunge pool - a must have!

The Las Terrazas is a stunning property, however it needs a lot of work. We spent the first two days without water for several hours; there was a problem with the water and the hotel staff would decide to shut it off last minute. We could not use the bathroom, wash our hands or do anything. it wasted a lot of time and was not the way we wanted to spend the first two days of our vacation. Also, the water continually smelled like sulfur, it was disgusting. We made many complains but no one seemed to care or do anything. One of the managers, a Canadian man, was rather arrogant and not helpful. We were finally moved to a patio 2 bedroom suite/apartment....which was much better. However, be aware that there are scorpions that hang around the patios.

The hotel restaurant is very good, it just takes them a long time to prepare food and the menu gets old fast. The transportation to San Pedro town is best via speedboat. Avoid renting a golf cart, especially after rain the path is a mess and your clothes will be ruined.

The dive shop is helpful, however they are not accommodating and are not willing to do afternoon dives. The hotel beach isn't great, its full of seaweed- swimming off the dock is the best option.

Room Tip: Get the Patio rooms.... the poolside ones are small.

We sincerely appreciate that you selected Las Terrazas Resort while on the beautiful island of Ambergris Caye and also that you took the time to share your comments. Unfortunately, as you noted while with us, we did experience a water leak in our main line during the first week of March. Shutting off the water for repairs was unavoidable with notice provided to guests a half hour prior to the shut off. We were able to delay our repairs by extending you an hour notice as you requested on one of the days. Our General Manager (the Canadian referenced) was very pleased to be able to relocate you to a Patio unit as the repairs in that building were completed prior to the repairs in the building you were staying. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience experienced by the unexpected emergency water issues.

We are confused by the comments regarding our on site PADI 5-star Dive Shop; White Sands Dive Shop as they routinely receive extremely positive remarks from our guests both while at the resort and online. The same for O Restaurant. Chef Alex is available to create any special request made by our guests who would like to try something not offered on the menu.

Regards,

Carolyn Stone

My husband and I went on our honeymoon to Las Terrazas....great choice. We did the all inclusive package minus the alcohol. Food was very fresh and quickly served. The wait staff is VERY friendly and accomadating. We got upgraded to a penthouse and it was very nice and roomy. The pool is beautiful and a great place to relax. There is a casino that is a quick walk on the beach away or you can set up a time for a sunset cruise, snorkeling, or scuba diving. Word of advice: bring bug spray....highly recommend and it is overpriced at the front desk. Overall, a small BEAUTIFUL resort I would recommend to others.
