Is this the best place I've ever stayed at? No, of course not, but for the price it's hard to beat.

It could be cleaner, there's only a few hangers and no night-stands, and rooms are basic (though there's a mini-fridge!!) but if you can tolerate those downsides you'll find Hotel del Rio tries its' best to exceed expectations:

They have a water cooler for you to refill your bottles, a basket full of anything you could have forgotten to bring (like aloe or bug spray), they offer beach towels upon request, complimentary basic breakfast (bread, peanut butter, jam, fruit, coffee--be aware, they don't refill anything 30 minutes from closing), the hammocks under the palapa are lovely and they have lounge chairs too, all with a view of the ocean.

They have two room options--palapas with no AC and regular rooms with AC. For us AC was not a question.

They also rent golf carts, for the same price as anywhere else, so may as well rent with them.

Location-wise, it's at the edge of town, so expect little noise (woohoo), and a 15ish minute walk into town, depending on where you're headed.

Would definitely stay here again and would recommend for people who are not overly picky or for those looking for a bargain.

Ended up here due to other places in town being fully booked. Nice outdoor space with hammocks, attractive exterior, pretty basic interior. Staff are friendly, night time security, and we spoke to some other friendly folks who were happy with the hotel.

The crew was great. The location is just far enough away from the noise easy to rest and relax. Great sized rooms. Great access to markets and bakeries. You cant find a better place on the island for the price. Loved our stay!

I may be judging based on the town itself but our cabana was nice and spacious. The town is a stark contrast from where we were staying on the mainland. But hotel del rio was clean, quiet and friendly. Walking distance to bars, restaurants, etc. We thought “Isla Bonita” was going to be a pretty island...you have to go searching for those parts bc San Pedro es no bonita. Definitely rent a golf cart. Hotel del rio had the best price while we were there.

I stayed here back in 2006 and thought it was the best within that price range. Today, it is a good place to rest and relax. Nothing fancy, but decent. Last time I stayed was in one of their main cabins. It had a kitchen with all the utensils needed. This saved us money since we did not have to eat out all the time. If you walk to the street behind the hotel, there is a great bakery in the corner with fresh bread in the morning.

This time, due to a tight budget, we settled for a small room upstairs. We only stayed one night. Room was small, but it had everything we needed. The only issues I had with the room were that sugar ants got in our food (there is a small fridge available, but the ants don't waste time!) and the bed was not very comfortable. But then again, I was travelling on a tight budget. The hammocks and chairs are great for relaxing and enjoying the breeze. Great WiFi. Continental breakfast was decent (fresh fruit, juice, toast, PB&J, butter).

Recommendation: Our check out time was at 11 AM. We booked a 3 hr snorkeling trip at 8 AM the same morning we were checking out. It didn't give us enough time to come back to the hotel to shower and change. They were willing to let us back in for 1 more hour, if the room was still available is what I was told. We ended up showering elsewhere.
