After seventeen hours of travel and layovers, we arrived to the dock at Cocotal Inn and Cabanas. We were graciously greeted and our luggage whisked to the casita where we spent 8 wonderful evenings. The owner, Tanya, the Guest Services Manager, Beulah and staff were all very attentive to our needs and requests.

Fourteen hours later, I awoke to a very peaceful setting. If you want lots of excitement and kids in the pool, this is not the place for you. The sand had been raked and cleaned and the turquoise waters were only steps from our porch. Although we didn’t seem to find time to use the pool, we did find time to utilize the resorts bikes and kayaks. We opted to take a walk into town the first day and rented a golf cart to allow us the freedom to travel throughout the island as we wished. Being 2 ½ miles from town can be a bit of a ways in the hot sun if you are walking. The roads can sometimes be a challenge (yes, I lost a flop in puddle number 1 and never recovered it). The mosquitoes were not nearly as bad as I had anticipated. The resort provided plenty of spray for those who were running low and I just happened to have my Claritan on hand to reduce the itching and inflammation.

Mira, the resort pooch was a sweetheart. Well behaved and very friendly. The resort is not inundated with guests, but rather kept at a perfect balance. With limited occupancy, it provides a perfect complement for honeymooners and couples who are looking to let go of the stress. The night we arrived, a couple were preparing to leave the next morning. Another couple were located in the garden cabana whom we enjoyed spending some time with at the Blue Hole and a couple other random dinners and events. Nobody felt obligated or a need to visit with one another. Instead, it was very casual and enjoyable.

I highly recommend Tanya and her staff. They have a gem of a hideaway and are fantastic people as a whole! We will be back to San Pedro all in part of their wonderful hospitality.

The other half and me just spent a blissful 4 days at the Cocotal. I feel the need to share this marvellous place with the world as we found the whole experience beyond perfection. The Cocotal is maybe 2 miles north of town that feels more like a million as you arrive by boat to this serene oasis. We had the pleasant surprise on arrival of being upgraded to the 2-bedroom apartment, which takes up the entire 1st floor of the main building. The rooms are sumptuously fitted out and decorated in the best of possible tastes and the highest of finishes. From beautiful handmade hardwood furniture to opulent four-poster beds, and from magnificent original art, to a kitchen that is better equipped than our own at home. All in all, god is in the details and you can see he or she has been very busy here. The limited number of guests gives the whole place an air of exclusivity. The staff are very approachable, friendly and attentive and are never interfering, you are left very much to your own devices with nothing more difficult to ponder on than should you take a dip in the alluring pool or walk that extra 20 metres to the warm crystal clear waters of the Caribbean. The reef is a 10-minute Kayak paddle from the hotel, where you can snorkel in a super clear 2 metres of water (all equipment is provided free of charge by the Inn.) Bikes are also provided if you feel the need to experience the hustle bustle of town and if the soporific climes are making you feel extra lazy you can always hire a golf cart. Tours are all easily booked here and the operators will pick up and drop off on the private dock.
It has several restaurants within walking distance and just next door there is a bar restaurant which also has a very handy dive/fishing outfit on their premises. The water taxi also picks up and drops off here too.
If you are really looking for a place to get away from it all and let your mind relax I couldn’t recommend Cocotal Inn any higher, once you’re there, I promise you, you won’t every want to leave.

My wife, another couple, and I spent a delightful week at Cocotal Belize. The choice wasn't my idea, and candidly I was a little apprehensive given its low cost by resort standards.

We all LOVED it! First, it was beautiful. We were in the Casita, and it was every bit as nice as a premium "name brand" property such as Four Seasons, Hyatt, etc. The service was absolutely top-notch, with three (four if you include the owner) employees for a maximum of 10 guests.

We were worried that there wouldn't be enough to do, and that proved not to be a concern. Snorkeling, a trip to the Mayan ruins, biking into town, walking to places to eat, and just relaxing kept us quite busy.

We've had the pleasure of staying at lots of pricey resorts on work and personal vacations, and the Cocotal Belize was right up there with the very best.

Also, Maura, the inn's dog, is too sweet for words!

We stayed at Cocotal Inn for 4 nights this April in the Garden Cabana and I've been meaning to write a review for it.

Pros:
- good balance of privacy and proximity to activities. There are only a handful of units so we barely saw other guests. At times we felt like we had the whole place to ourselves. It's also not too far from San Pedro, relatively speaking. We rented a golf cart but in retrospect I would have done without it (more later).
- GREAT value at $125 per night, this place is a steal. The cabana is nicely appointed and smelled wonderfully sweet when we arrived (actually I forgot to ask Marta about the scent - it's really awesome). The bikes and kayaks are complimentary.
- The couple managing the property - Fernando and Marta - are extremely warm and kind.
- The location amongst the best hotel restaurants means it's a quick stroll to good eats (i.e. Capricorn Resort)

Cons:
- No wifi. We had to go over to White Sands to use the computer. Not that we were doing any work - we just like to look up information / activities on the internet. By the way, the bartender and the owner at White Sands are very friendly. We might splurge and stay there next time instead.
- Communication issues. Fernando and Marta are darlings but at times we felt the language barrier was a problem. We tried to ask him to book a cave tubing + zipline tour but things got lost in translation. We were never sure if he knew what we were talking about and ended up booking a very expensive trip through White Sands. The owner Tanya was no where in sight when we were there - never met her.
- Also, the phone in the room was broken so we couldn't make any phone calls to book local activities.
- This is not a Con specific to Cocotal but to the North of San Pedro area in general: if you can, do not bother with the golf cart. The road is very bumpy and pot-holed. And we had to drive through a rough part of town just to get to the center. At $45/day we might as well have taken the water taxi.

The Cocotal Inn exceeded our expectations. My wife and I stayed in the Beach Casita, the Garden Cabana and the lower unit in the Main House. All were constructed with Belizean wood and decor. The Beach Casita was our favorite because of its location right on the beach. The lower unit in the main house was the most spacious and best out-fitted for cooking.

The owner, Tanya, was of great assistance before our trip, helped with our travel arrangements while we were on Ambergris, and ensured we knew of all local happenings and hot spots. The staff, Fernando and Marta, were exceptionally warm and helpful. Fernando even spent an afternoon with us on the coral reef snorkeling and hunting for lobsters.

The Cocotal provided us bikes and kayaks during our stay. We used the bikes constantly; we biked into San Pedro several times and even to Portofino resort about five miles to the north.

We really like the Cocotal's location north of San Pedro. There were a handful of restaurants within a short bike ride or walk and San Pedro was about a 30 minute bicycle ride or an $8 water taxi . All though there are contiguous resorts on the beach, we felt much more secluded than San Pedro resorts would offer. Captain Morgans Resort is close by and offers all tours one could want.

We highly recommend this resort. Enjoy your trip.
