“Great vacation spot!”
Reviewed March 10, 2014

We had a great stay at Cocotal in the end of January 2014. We stayed in the yellow cabana for five nights. We enjoyed our stay and would stay here again.

Pros:
- The cabanas were clean and very nice. The bed was comfortable and the air conditioning worked well. The staff was great! Ernesto and Tanya were so kind and always available to answer questions. Every staff member we interacted with on the resort was nice and could answer our questions.
- The bikes and kayaks included the room cost are wonderful to have. We used the bikes every day and took the kayak out one day.
- Jesus picked us up from the airport and took us to get groceries. I would recommend buying everything you need then, especially if you are not staying long. It is a little bit of a trek to get back into town and we usually did it on the bikes (about 25-30 minutes) which would make taking a lot of groceries back difficult. Cocotal has a golf cart you can rent, but if you know what you want you should just get it while you have a car driving available to you.
- There are plenty of restaurants nearby (Capricorn, White Sands, Aji, Ak Bol) and the town has good restaurants as well.
- We used the White Sands dive shop to go snorkeling twice. It is conveniently located right next-door and they have a lot of tours. All the guides are great, but we especially liked Bernie.

Cons:
- The water pressure was not very strong in our cabana. We usually had pretty warm water but it was not always hot. It was not a huge issue, but definitely something to note.
- The sand flies were terrible, this is not Cocotal’s fault, but make sure you bring and wear bug spray. I did not one night and I paid for it.

Other things to note:
- Bring a flashlight to walk around at night.
- Everything is causal so need to bring dressy clothes.
- There is no shampoo or conditioner in the rooms, however there is bar soap and hand soap. You can also buy shampoo in the grocery store in town.
- The room has a coffee maker so buy coffee when you are in town.
- The location worked well for us. It is a little ways from town but we liked the privacy. You can easily get to town by day, but getting back and forth at night would be difficult.
- The beach is small but there are a couple of chairs to relax in and you can bring the pool chairs over if all the beach chairs are full. The dock was great and the hammocks were lovely.
- I had no problem with this cabana but I thought the orange one had the best view since you could see the water from there; however the yellow had more privacy. The beachfront casita has the best view.
- Overall it was a great stay and I would recommend it!

Room Tip: Orange cabana is closest to the ocean and may have a slight view.

Outstanding experience! Very casual and friendly, the staff were wonderful. Beautiful sunrises in the front of our cabana and sunsets out of the back on the lagoon. Loved every minute of our stay and we can't wait to go back!

We couldn't of asked for anything more from Cocotal. Our rooms were immaculate, equipped with everything that we needed. The staff was the best! Ernesto was so helpful- even called our excursion boat before they left to make sure that we were on it! Samuel was available to us for absolutely anything that we ever needed and always with a smile on his face. We have nothing to complain about and only praise for Cocotal inns. We even had our very own watch dog Mara that seemed to be everyone's dog, she even followed us all the way into town one day, but yet is so well trained that even if you call her she will not enter your cabana or go on the pool deck. Kayaks are free to take out to the reef, and Sam or Calvin get them all ready and take them out to the end of the pier for you, bike are available for free to take wherever you want to go. Even the bed was comfortable! We had the best time! Loved it!!! If you want a place that is not so commercial and complete comfort with an extended family there to take care of you choose Cocotal Inn & Cabana's!!

Room Tip: All rooms are great, we weren't on the beach, but it's such a short walk, there are no bad r...

In advance of our reservation, Ernesto and Tanya helped to answer all of our questions about the property and the area. When we arrived, everything was as we expected. We stayed in the 2nd floor of the main house, and we were very happy with the space. It was a very large two-bedroom with an open porch on the beachfront side of the house and a screened porch on the back. The property was clean and very well maintained. There were plenty of bikes and kayaks for complimentary use - there was never an issue of availability. It felt like we had a private property - the staff was always there and so helpful when needed but never intrusive. The property is in a convenient location - close enough to bike to town, or if you are fit, to walk. There are several good restaurants within walking distance to Cocotal, and the kitchen in our suite provided everything we needed to prepare meals, smoothies, etc.

The only negatives - which have nothing to do with Cocotal... as in most reviews, the road to Cocotal and all northern properties is cratered and will rattle your fillings. The preferred route is the beach path, however, it has its own drawbacks. With the construction happening on the far north side of the island, there are 'rush hours' - approx 7-8 AM and 5-6 PM - on the path when the workers ride their bikes to and from their worksites. Hundreds (not an exaggeration) of bikes would pass us while we walked or biked on the very narrow path. It was necessary to constantly look over your shoulder and get out of the way (though they were polite about it and most signaled their approach).

Overall, we would stay again and recommend Cocotal. It was a very nice experience.

Room Tip: If you want a clear view of the ocean, the Casita is the place to choose. The 2nd floor of the main...

We loved our stay at the cocotal inn.
The manager and staff (Ernesto and Sam) were especially helpful and a pleasure to meet.
The rooms are great, clean and very well equipped.

We highly recommend to anyone to stay there and we'll definitely be back.

If your looking for a well taken care of, clean, quiet, warm, inviting, comfortable place than this would be it. We spent over two wonderful weeks here and we loved it. We called cabana 5 home and it supplied us with everything we needed. The bed was a comfortable king and the shower was hot. Two of my musts. Lots of room in the closets to hang my things and drawers for his stuff. Because the Olympics were on we like having a t.v. to check out the results at the end of the day. The kitchenette was perfect because we enjoy having breakfast in and bringing leftovers home at night. If you would need some help with something or would like to take out a kayak then the guys that are working in the yard will go the extra mile to get it done. They are so warm and friendly it was a pleasure to have them around. We enjoyed having the pool to ourselves and it was a nice way to end the afternoon. I even used my snorkel gear in there, ha.
It was wonderful thing to take out a kayak and paddle out to the reef. We always seen something interesting like the day we both saw a ray take a leap out of the ocean. So cool. We had plans to kayak the lagoon but somehow it never happened. But we did sit on the beach chairs at the back of the property at sunset numerous times overlooking the lagoon which was so relaxing and beautiful. Other times we took the rental golf cart from the Cocotal into town for dinner. We certainly tried out many restaurants in the time we were there with many choices to choose from some of my favorites were Elvi's kitchen, El Fagon, Caramba, Blue Water Grill, The Baker south of town, and Dande Frozen Custard (omg cococut!!!!!). The best ambiance was the Mambo's restaurant at the Matachica Beach Resort. It was amazing, so was the service and the food. So romantic and beautiful under the large palapa outside. Its a must!! You need to take a boat to the north end of the island but the restaurant will pick you up and bring you back if you make reservations with the office at Cocotal. Of course we did the snorkel at Hol Chan and Shark ray alley. We booked with the dive office next door at White Sands and went with Luis and Bernie. Great guys and small group. Ambergris Caye is an amazing place and the local people were over the top for me. If I would say one thing that I was not happy with I would say the sand flies so bring some bug spray and use it or slather on baby oil cause they won't bother you then. It won't keep me from coming back though.

Room Tip: Next time I would stay on the top floor of the main house or the cabana at the front of the property...

We enjoyed our stay very much. Our rooms were beautiful and very clean and bright. Lots of hot water and king size beds. Screened verandah and pool and hot tub. Fully equipped kitchen and great staff we were able to use their bikes and rode everywhere. The roads are not good and biking was easiest. Water taxis also available

Room Tip: Do not think there is a bad room anywhere in this place
