This was my third trip to the Belizean Cayes and my second to Tranquility Bay...Last year the resort was brand-new and had some kinks to work out, but they have done it! New staff include Pany's wife as the cook (with yummy dishes like Coco Chili Shrimp and whole Snapper and seafood burritos), his daughter Naria as manager, and his son-in-law Sergio manning the bar and serving many of the meals. Naria can arrange any trips you want to take from the resort - snorkeling, diving, even rafting on the mainland - and she actually even set us up to go all the way to Tikal, Guatemala, and back our last few days of our trip. Sergio makes an incredible rum punch and pina coladas to die for...he really made us feel special with his attentive service, and he always remembered what we liked to drink. Unlike last year, they had menus to choose from at every meal and no set mealtimes, so we didn't tire of the food at all - in fact I think we ate too much!
The resort is clean and sparkling, with the bar/restaurant actually over the water - gorgeous! We went snorkeling right from the dock, and also took kayaks out with snorkel gear and always felt safe because the reef blocks any major swells. We walked all around from there - unlike in San Pedro, you can walk a few miles on the beach - and TB's beach was by far the best on the north island, with soft sand cleaned of seaweed or debris every morning.
Rooms are spacious, light, with great ventilation and fans and air conditioning. I tend to be picky about beds but I slept like a baby on these. Each cabana has at least a room and a loft, so fits four comfortably and more if you want. The one day we had trouble with hot water, they went right out and fixed it right away. A neat thing about Tranquility Bay is that it they use reverse osmosis to make drinking water from ocean water, and it is tasty and completely safe to drink.
The atmosphere at TB was so relaxed, it is hard to return to "real life." As a small, family-run resort that is removed from town, Tranquility Bay feels like a true vacation - from crowds, from hurry, from agendas - where you get really personal service. When we were leaving, they were getting ready to host a wedding, and the whole staff was excited about it. I'm sure it was a very special day. I know I can hardly wait to go back!
