“shark ray alley + hol chan - best aquatic day trip”
Reviewed January 30, 2013

we spent the day (9am-3pm) on a catamaran, sailing from ambergris caye to caye caulker, hol chan, and shark ray alley. this is the absolute best day trip. so much fun and relaxing. you dont need to scuba dive. just snorkel and look at the amazing coral, fish, sting rays, and nurse sharks. by the way, the nurse sharks are incredibly docile - we all pet them and swam with them. please hire a local guide - it will make the trip much more informative and fun. it is just a really, really cool experience to swim in crystal green waters while amongst schools of fish and rays and sharks. tip - if eating at caye caulker -- the service is super slow at the restaurants at the main dock. we didnt have time to look around caye caulker. walk north on the island, where restaurants are much less crowded. grab a quick bite, with time to spare to look around.

“andor says: Great close encounter with sharks and rays...Fantastic!”
Reviewed January 23, 2013

Read my review for HOL CHAN MARINE RESERVE first as this the SHARK-RAY ALLEY was our second guided stop within this trip... It just cannot get better... I'm telling you this will be one of your best 2.5 hours spent in your life!!

It took about five mintutes to travel from Hol Chan to Shark Alley. Upon arrival the guides had a feeding device which they summerged (about 5-10 feet) and proceeded into the water. Us in the boat knew the drill, we followed right away. Though there were no corals in this area, it was just unreal to see so many manta rays and sharks feeding right below us.

For those of you with shark "fears and phobias", this is a great "break the ice" situation as you could have not possibly encountered with a more gentle and approachable group of sharks: we got to hold them, touch them, rub their bellies....no.... this is not kinky stuff...get your mind off the gutter!

It was truly an amazing snorkling experience here too though not as long as Hol Chan's.

Got back to the boat after about 45 minutes, were offered water again and a coconut cookie (very delicious) and took off back to the hotel drop off piers... and I mean "took off" as the boat driver had his "foot on the pedal" on our way back.....hold on to your hat!

Recommendations – Go in the morning, take a T-shirt, sun screen, towel, water, do not take any other belongings as they may get wet.

Pro's – Amazing, glorious, unforgettable, close by, great guides, unbelievable marine life and very affordable

Con's – at times there were too many boats around us…but who cares, make the place your own paradise and love every minute of it…as this experience will be everlasting!

Andorsworld – This is my first of many reviews on TripAdvisor. I am andor and I am an avid world traveler with a quest of visiting at least 100 countries before I die. Belize was my country #40 and it takes a special place in my heart: warmth, peace, laid back and beauty to describe just a wonderful country…and yes, and San Pedro is La Isla Bonita like Madonna sang

“Nice Nurse Sharks”

Never thought I would do this, but the guides help you overcome your fears without pressure. The sharks and rays are plentiful. Just jump in and do it.

“very fun experience...but not for eco-conscious peeps!”
Reviewed January 14, 2013

shark ray alley is a great snorkeling experience. it is a spot where old fisherman used to work and thus the nurse sharks and rays became conditioned to show up there whenever a boat arrives. so the key is having all your gear ready and getting into the water ASAP when you get there because the sharks gather in a horde when you arrive and quickly disperse when they realize you have no fish for them.

and yes, the tour guides and tourists grab the sharks and rays indiscriminately and pass them around....guilty--we didn't touch any rays, but i couldn't help it, i have always wanted to feel live shark skin! when you hold them upside down the sharks really do go into a catatonic trance. it's amazing. but i can totally see how those who believe in not touching the wildlife would be upset--there were a few rays that had written advertisements of tour groups on them. there is a popular tour operator called lil' alfonse and i saw a ray with "alfonse" finger painted on its skin....in many places we have swam around the world we were told not to touch the ray skin as it destroys the natural protective surfaces and can harm the animals....when in rome i guess....

We snorkeled with nurse sharks, fish and rays galore...it reminded me of pet dogs how they come to the boat for their expected hand out!
