“snorkeling was great”
Reviewed April 28, 2013

We did the blue hole as a snorkeling trip. We were staying on halfmoon island so it was a short 20 minute trip to get there. The snorkeling was some of the best we saw during our week in the area. But I would say that the really interesting stuff was in the first 15ft of water. When I finned down to the lip of the drop I really didn't see much of any interest. But that first 15ft was just loaded with things to see. Going deeper doesn't always mean seeing better. Check out Lighthouse tours. They have the rights to the camp on halfmoon island. It's always nice to not have to take a long boat ride to get to the site.

“Incredible if Advanced”
Reviewed April 26, 2013

I had always wanted to dive the Blue Hole and finally got my chance. There were 3 groups on the boat (snorkelers, open water divers, and advanced divers). It is absolutely not worth the money or the 2 hours in very rough seas unless you are advanced certified. The stalactites are amazing, but those start at 32 meters. The only animal life I saw were 2 large sharks, but again, those were at the deepest part of the dive. For open water divers and snorkelers, it's a dark, low visibility hole in the ground.

“Snorkelers, here - we still loved it”
Reviewed April 16, 2013

A very costly and long, tiresome boat ride (2-2.5 hrs of choppy water from San Pedro - take your dramamine if you get seasick!) but we felt it was well worth it, even for snorkeling. We aren't experienced divers but we thought, "why go to Belize and not see the Blue Hole?" Went with Amigos Del Mar as part of a 3 stop, all day trip. Not many snorkelers travel this far so most likely you will have a small group or private guide, which we were lucky to have. We loved learning about the marine life as he pointed out different things. And we felt the coral here was more beautiful, dense, and vibrant than, say Hol Chon, as it is so far away from the coast and so close to the surface of the water. Plus, looking down at the drop off is 3 parts amazing and 1 part mysterious/terrifying. Cannot stress the need to reapply sunscreen on your backside over and over again. Of course, get yourself an underwater camera or camera case.

“It is a hole... the Great Blue Hole”
Reviewed April 11, 2013

How can people be unhappy with the Blue Hole? I mean, experienced divers should know what it is about. There is no wildlife. There is not much light or good visibility. Though, you free fall for 40 m, and suddenly you see those columns, stalactites around which you can go, and it is all a very quick experience because of the depths. I found it really captivating.
Then you have the chance of pointing at this hole on pictures at home, and say "I've been in there!!!".
Of course I would say, if you have to pay 200 USD only for this dive it may not be worth it. But usually dive trips offer other dives in the same day, around the Lighthouse Reef, and even a stop at a bird sanctuary, with food and everything included, so all in all as a day trip it is REALLY worth to go here and do everything - and be happy about it.
