If you are looking for a sit down fancy place tyo east this is not the place to go. But if you are looking for good seafood cooked right in front of you this is the place to be. There are few places to sit inside but the best place is outside on the deck watching the ships come in and out of Jacksonville, and the commercial fishermen bring in their catch. My wife had the shrimp basket and I had the grilled fish basket and they were both outstanding with enough of each to have a second meal.

The Safe Harbor Seafood Market and Restaurant is unique in the Jacksonville area. It is located in the old 1700s village of Mayport. They have operated quite a few fishing boats out of the Mayport dock's for a long time. They are one of the major wholesale suppliers to businesses throughout the North Florida area. From this resource, they had chosen to also open a small retail shop on the left-hand side as you're entering Mayport. They have almost every kind of seafood imaginable, and, of course, it's very fresh. Prices here are better than you can find at any seafood market, or grocery store. They will pack your seafood for you in your chest and fill it with ice, or provide you a cardboard box plastic lined and fill that with ice. The locals drive for many miles to buy their seafood here; that's the best testament to its quality, and price.
They also operate a very small restaurant within the seafood market. There are just a few tables and the food is prepared right before your eyes. They also make up things like gumbo and chowder for you to take home by the quart.
So if you want the very best seafood in Jacksonville, go to Safe Harbor where get it was probably just taken off their boat the night before. And pick up a little gumbo to take home with you; it's excellent.

I frequent Safe Harbor seafood quite a bit and still visit the original Mayport location as that has the ambiance I desire. The fried fish platter in which they use Basa fish is extremely good as well, it is nice and flaky and really taste much better than some of the other fish like grouper. You will not go wrong if you enjoy fried shrimp, fish or oysters!

Went here on a Sunday afternoon. The wait time in line was about a half hour. The girl taking everyone's order at the one & only register was either: a) new, or b) the slowest order taker in history. Thankfully, once the order was placed, the food came within 10-15 minutes. As an appetizer, we got the crab dip; it was good, but nothing special. My wife enjoyed her fried shrimp, and my blackened fish taco feast was pretty good, although they don't tell you what kind of fish they use for that, so I'm guessing it was the cheap tilapia or basa filets. One minor complaint for my tacos was that the four tortillas that came with the meal were stuck together. The coleslaw was bland, while the extra $2.99 "loaded" HALF potato was just OK. The french fries were good. Oddly, they do not offer entrees, just appetizers, salads, baskets, sandwiches, & tacos.

One thing that seems to have become very popular nowadays is paper cups & plates, and plastic silverware instead of the real stuff. Maybe it's just me, but when I pay $40 for a lunch, I'd like to get real silverware & plates.

It was crowded and there was a several-minute wait in line to place our order, but it came surprisingly fast. Conch fritters were so good! Blackened scallops were done to perfection - not overdone as many places cook them, and the salad with fresh grilled shrimp was excellent. Walking around the market looking at the fresh seafood available for sale was fun too. No romantic ambience, but the seafood doesn't get any fresher or cooked any closer to perfection. We will definitely make this our lunch stop next time we're there.
