“Don't Let Looks Fool You”

We visit Jacksonville, and the Atlantic Beach area on a somewhat regular basis, so we had driven by Safe Harbor numerous times.
Sadly, we never stopped because it just didn't have a lot of "curb appeal".
A friend we were visiting in the area raved about it, and suggested we go there for lunch.
WOW!
EVERYTHING about it was a wonderful experience.
EVERYTHING is fresh and has its own unique flavor.
Service couldn't be any better, as the wait staff are CONSTANTLY patrolling the waterfront dining area, just waiting to be of service.

DON'T PASS THIS PLACE UP.

“Fish Market”

This is the only place to go to get fresh seafood to cook at home. I don't normally eat there since I like to cook but you pick our the fish you want and how you want them to fix it., i.e. skinned, boned, head on,

“Fresh, Fresh, Fresh”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 28, 2014

Here's the setup. Commercial fishermen bring the day's catch to Safe Harbor's market everyday. the market selections are amazing. Now add on top of that an experienced kitchen staff that knows how to prepare really good fried and grilled seafood. This was our second visit in the last six months. But this time we came on Sunday. (now open). The line was to the door about 30 deep, but it gives you time to look over the menu board and fresh catch in the market. Step to the counter, order up, they give you a number and bring it to an indoor or outdoor table. We sat outside and watched the fishing boats come in and pelicans scooping up remnants of the day's catch.

The fish tacos were fresh, hot and fully of flavor. They are make you own style and come with corn tortillas and cole slaw. We also ordered a house salad, very fresh too and a pound of steamed shrimp. The shrimp was seasoned with there "on site" made seasonings - much better than the commercial brands you buy in a boil-n-bag.

We had to wait a little for the table to be cleaned, but we also arrived at the peak lunch hour, so it wasn't that big of a a deal. The staff is friendly and make you feel welcome.

If you haven't been here - go. Its a little bit of a drive from Jacksonville, but the experience is worth it. We met the owners on this trip brothers - Chris and Gregg I believe. Two middle aged men just doing what they love.

“Fresh Seafood, Well Prepared”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 20, 2014

Fresh seafood. Seriously, the only seafood more fresh is still swimming in the Atlantic.

To get to the order desk, you must pass through the seafood market. Although they handle a huge volume of seafood, there was not one whiff of unpleasant "fishy" odor, which speaks highly of the great care they give in handling food. The menu has a nice variety of choices; however, as my husband and I are both devoted shrimp lovers, we chose shrimp, fried. The flavor of the shrimp was outstanding, the batter very delicate.

We also sampled the Minorcan Clam Chowder, in which I was a trifle disappointed. Minorcan-style chowder should be closer to Manhattan style, and Safe Harbor's chowder is closer to New England style. It also has an unusual hint of some sort of wine, which for me took away some of the earthy pleasure of eating fresh seafood in a joint by the water. Seriously, Safe Harbor, save the gourmet stuff for a fine dining establishment, which your place definitely is not. It was good soup, but not Minorcan Clam Chowder.

Before leaving, we purchased two pounds of shrimp for another home-based shrimp feast later that same day. We were well-pleased with our purchase!

Safe Harbor is a very, very good seafood restaurant. Not my favorite, not even my favorite in tiny Mayport. But it's very satisfying, and I'd consider going there again.

“great fresh seafood store”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 19, 2014

We did not eat at the restaurant but if the quality of the restaurant food is anything like the fresh seafood we bought at the retail store it has to be great. I would give it a try. I don't see how you could be disappointed.
