Every now and then if you are really lucky you will find something like The Owl Cafe. A top chef in a big city gets tired of the grind or wantse to raise the kids in a small town, so he moves to someplace like Apalachicola. And you get a n unpretentious jewel turning out dishes that are world class. In NYC you’d have to make reservations a month in advance. Here you walk in and get treated with just plain fabulous food.
We had the seafood dish - can’t remember the name - with shrimp, scallops, mussels and calamari in a wine sauce with all sorts of goodies in it. Simply to die for. When I say “best meal in decades” it is a fact. Last time I was this impressed was in Big Pine Key in the 80’s in a dive run by a Belgian chef newly in Florida.
We winter in FL, summer in TN. From now on we will route through here just to get a meal at the owl twice a year.
Strongly recommended if you’re in the area.
