The outside of the hotel was in need of repair from the front to the back. Getting the mold off the outside steps that go to the rooms upstairs would be a plus, it needs painting/or staining, The bushes around the stairs need trimmed. That's just cosmetic. The wood is rotting on the outside. They charge a good price to stay here. The food is not overpriced, but it's not inexpensive either. I just feel when you pay that kind of money for a room, that the hotel should also be kept up. I didn't want to smoke on the porch or the entry way so I opted for the parking lot. I did notice an employee smoking in front of the stairs that lead to the covered porch that go to the restaurants. I smoke and disagree with that.. There are chairs outside along the walkway, but they were dirty and molded, nothing alittle bleach wouldn't cure and people walking past.
After seeing the outside of the hotel, front and back. I thought oh my. But when we opened the door to our room a I really impressed. The room was quaint, no hairdryer, no ironing board, plenty of storage, nice size bathroom, and the room was nicely cleaned. No dirt, no dust. The bathroom was nicely decorated, fluffy towels and clean, plenty of storage for your essentials in the cubby hole where the towels are kept. The room kinda of slanted, but only by the patio door. The view was beautiful from the second floor, they have a totally screened porch with 2 chairs and a little table to sit. It might be nice in the fall, but with the airconditioning going it was extrememly hot out there. The screening keeps alot of the breeze from coming in. There was kareoke, it was loud....there were only a handful of people when we went in, so we didn't stay, but we could hear them from the deck (yes I turned off the airconditioning) I was entertained. I smiled and sang along from there. My husband wasn't as receptive.
We walked to all the nearby shops and that was fun...and we went to the beach which was beautiful. We never ate inside the actual restaurant, we always ate outside at Carolines and the breakfast was wonderful, plenty to fill you up, good food and coffee, that to me was enjoyable.
The people were friendly and the restaurant service at the hotel was very good.
But to pay the price we paid just for that room. Would I stay again.......No not for the price

Room Tip: Cleaniness got a lower score because of the premises, but the room was exceptionally cleaned

If you are used to staying in hotels with "names" this is not the place for you. If you want a taste of old Florida with views of the shrimp boats and oystermen going down the river, beautiful sunrises stay here. The room was quaint, bare bones furnishings, no hair dryer, ladies. Caroline's Restaurant is part of this and a really good breakfast comes with the room. Just kick back and relax. There are some really cute shops in town and a few good restaurants. Don't let the distressed look of the town fool you. Prices are not inexpensive.

Room Tip: We stayed on the lower floor..only 2 floors. Liked sitting on the porch. More expensive upstairs, bu...

If you are looking for a five star hotel with tons of amenities...this isn't for you. If you are looking for quaint, comfortable and friendly...this is the place! We stayed in the River Cottage which is a suite with two bedrooms, kitchen and living room. We partied til the wee hours on the spacious deck overlooking the beautiful Apalachicola River. When the staff heard we were there for my wedding, they provided us with a (very decent!!) bottle of champagne. Breakfast, which is included in the room rate was just fantastic! Our stay just couldn't have been better!!

As a native Floridian, this place brings back sweet childhood memories of our "camp" on the Gulf. Get a second floor room for a screened private porch overlooking the river. What a view at sunset! The breakfast at Caroline's (included) is amazing.

Overall not a bad place. Room was very clean, breakfast was the best both days we stayed, it comes with the stay. We stayed upstairs and it was miserable trying to sit on the balcony, it was way to hot. The Hotel is in need of an overhaul no doubt about it. For the price we won't stay again, we paid $139+ with the Trip Advisor discount, should be more like $89. The band plays till midnight Saturdays, don't plan on sleeping if your upstairs until after that. One more thing, to the lady that is there in the morning time, you need to smoke out back instead of hanging out the front door.

Stayed right after Debby hurricane in July, our room's carpet was wet and musty, They used the ac and opened doors to dry out. The animal life from the balcony and restaurant views are outstanding. The breakfast was tip notch! Wish there was no smoking on the grounds overall not just in some places as people were smoking outside front door etc. Seems to be a common problem all over Florida though. Wonderful town, walked everwhere. Near beautidul beaches of St george IS.

We stayed in The River Cottage and couldn't have been more pleased. With the two master bedrooms, large living room, full kitchen, separate glass enclosed jacuzzi room and spacious private deck, all overlooking the river, we didn't have that "we're staying in a hotel feeling." It was our own little piece of heaven. We loved the special touches in the bathroom with the towels and washcloths rolled and tied with purple grosgrain ribbons, and the great supply of Paya Organic toiletries. The large bathroom also housed a washer and dryer, but since we were celebrating our 40th, we didn't take time to use them.
The town is also charming with the most friendly people. We are avid picture takers, and found many interesting old building and fishing boats to photograph. We rose early the three mornings we were there to watch the sunrise, but because of rain clouds only the first morning produced a spectacular show. There was still something magical about starting the morning on the river as the sun lightened the sky and the oyster boats went out for their daily catch. The seagulls also provided unendless entertainment. Can we say, Paradise?
The breakfasts at Caroline's were awesome. I so loved the lemon pancakes with the raspberry butter that I had them all three mornings. My husband enjoyed the seafood breakfasts, and we both agreed they were some of the best meals we have ever had.
This has become our new favorite place and we can't wait to return.

Room Tip: The River Cottage is very spacious and could easily be shared by two couples. It is also very priva...
