“First Stay”
Reviewed February 17, 2013

This was our first visit to the area. The very best thing about our stay at the Coombs house was the innkeepers,Scott and Tamela. Scotts hot entree for breakfast was something we looked forward to daily. We loved the social times and talking with the other guest. I was excited each day to get back from our travels and tell Tamela where we had been.

On the less positive side, the Inn needs some deep cleaning, polishing and updating. It just looks tired. The step in shower in our room was poorly constructed and very small. It needs a complete overhaul and you will definitely run out of hot water. One of the continous gas hot water systems would be great. The noise overhead was to be expected and we liked being on the ground floor of the mansion.
I was surprised by some of the Asia inspired decorating. This did not seem period appropriate

The temperature in the common areas was very comfortable but inside the room at night was more difficult. The first night was extremely hot and we couldn't raise the windows. The other nights were very cold.
One suggestion we have is a open deck exciting from the dining room towards the front of the house. This would be wonderful to have breakfast on in nice weather. Even have the wine and cheese here with someone playing guitar in the warm months.
We did have a wonderful time and look forward to returning and see Scott and Tamela again.

Room Tip: I really liked being in the mansion for the conveinence of access to breakfast, coffee, wine etc. I...

We went for two nights at Valentine's Day and would definitely return. Very personal and caring service, gorgeous woodwork and furnishings, wonderful breakfast. Bikes (included) are a big plus to tour the historic town. Tamela and Scott were so welcoming and available to help advise us for day trips, dining. The verandas are inviting. Coffee maker in the room is convenient-- even though they serve coffee and breakfast downstairs. The historic building with all its detail is such a break from the usual hotel accommodations. It was perfect for our 25th Valentines together!

The drive along the forgotten coast into Apalachicola is one of the most pleasant in all of Florida. The town itself is very special with warm hearted interesting people. The Coombs Inn is a unique place only enhanced by the excellent innkeepers. Scott was very helpful sharing his special recipies with my wife Rosa. Check out the many excellent restaurants. The oysters and shrimp are the best I have ever had. At the Inn ....the Coombs Room is highly recommended

Inn was as described on the Internet. Staff very pleasant. Only complaint they need to get some new duvets, sheets and pillows, these were pilled, old and worn out. We have stayed at 3 star hotels lately that had devine sheets, duvets and pillows(Holiday Inn,LaQuinta). I got a little creepy thinking of all the comments of what romance was going on in this veranda and hated the thoughts of not having sparkling clean linens from top to bottom which I would have enjoyed while staying there.
Please Tamela and Scott get this done as new resident Inn managers, they add so much personality to the Coombs Inn. We stayed in the Biltmore Veranda was very clean when we arrived and next day also.It was darling! loved sitting on the porch for our happy hour in spite of the noise of cars, after all Inns were mostly always old homes built near the town and at the edge of the roads unless you were way out in the country. Most inns have noise within the walls so don't stay at inns if you can't handle that while staying at them:)

My wife and I just returned home from a weeklong trip to Apalachicola, Florida. While there, we stayed at the Coombs House Inn. Upon checking in we met the Inn Keepers: Scott & Tamela. They are both outgoing, friendly and customer focused, therefore well suited to their role at this unique B&B. They prepared great breakfasts for us each day and during the entire week never served the same hot meal twice. They assisted us in any way they could to make our visit a pleasant one. Tamela and Scott were very informative concerning things that we might want to do or see and recommended local restaurants we might enjoy. They told us about the theater in downtown Apalachicola and explained who was performing the night that we checked in. Tamela gave us the number to reserve the tickets and we were able to attend the show. Each day when we returned to the inn, while we enjoyed the fresh baked cookies they had baked, we shared with them our adventures of the day. Thanks to Tamela and Scott we really enjoyed staying at the Coombs House Inn. Their interactions with us made staying there a relaxing and very enjoyable experience.

We recently visited the inn and stayed in the "veranda suites," a separate building behind the mansion that houses four accommodations, We learned that the building used to be two apartments that upon being acquired by the inn were split in half, which accounts for some of the oddities of the floor plan. For anyone concerned, incidentally, it's just a short walk across the parking area from the veranda suites to the main house. One of the negatives of the veranda suites is that you are pelted by both street noise (from a main road) and from people talking, watching television, or doing nearly anything in adjacent units, so light sleepers might be more comfortable in a different room.
Reservations and check in went fine (although we never were able to get a second key for the room and just made do without it). When we went into the suite, the first thing I saw was an overflowing ashtray full of cigarette butts sitting on the porch table. It was removed on my request. The suite itself was beautifully decorated, as advertised, but gettting down at the heels. The tub caulk was cracked and mildewed, some fabrics were frayed, sheets were pilled and things were not as clean as I typically see in similar properties. The floor had not been swept (and was not swept throughout our stay). There was a dead fly on the windowsill (which remained there throughout our stay). When we turned down the elaborately made-up bed late at night, there were blood splotches on the duvet cover at the head of the bed and spots of unknown origin on some pillow cases. Upon my request, the duvet cover was replaced. The replacement also had stains, but at least the were not bloody red; I wound up taking the duvet and offending pillows off the bed. The property should consider finding a new laundry service but, more importantly, it's incredible that housekeeping would be told to make up beds with those kind of linens. Housekeeping during our stay consisted of putting the decorative pillows back on the bed and replacing used bath towels. On the last day, they also replaced a used bottle of water.
On the plus side, Scott and Tam are very personable and Scott does a terrific job with breakfast. They really added a lot to our stay in Appalacicola and are a big asset to the property. The mansion itself is really lovely. But on the whole, the experience lacks the attention to detail and gracious feeling of properties in this class.

Room Tip: Veranda suites are noisy.

This has been our 3rd visit to Coombs- and this was by far, the best! The reason is because of the the new managing couple- Scott and Tamela! They were very accomodating and pleasant! They went the extra mile time and again and made our stay very relaxing!!! The food was great- and that is one of the reasons we stay at B&Bs- but their personal touch made an incredible difference in our experience! Two thumbs up for the new management!!! We will be back because of them!
